The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has cancelled the Wind
Advisory. 

The advisory for this area was changed to a Winter Weather 
Advisory due to the threat of blowing snow.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
A generally quiet weather pattern continues today for northern
Alaska. Increasing winds on Sunday will cause wind chill values
to approach advisory levels along the Chukchi Sea Coast as well
as in the western Brooks Range. Overall, the models generally
initialize well and are in good agreement with the overall
synoptic scale pattern out through the middle of the upcoming
week.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a 518 dam low is currently centered south of
Kaktovik, while a 516 dam low currently stretches from St.
Lawrence Island into the Gulf of Anadyr. A ridge currently
stretches across the southern Interior while a separate ridge is
currently situated over Wrangel Island. The ridge that is
currently over Wrangel Island will push off to the east on
Sunday, eventually merging with the ridge over the Interior. The
ridge over the eastern half of the forecast area will persist
through much of the upcoming week. The low that is currently over
Barter Island will push off into Canada on Sunday. The low that
is currently near St. Lawrence Island will persist into the
middle of the upcoming workweek.

Central and Eastern Interior: Some light snow showers will
continue this evening over the Yukon Flats before tapering off
after midnight. Gusty easterly winds associated with the Tanana
Valley Jet will persist this evening in the area around Delta
Junction. There are a few patches of stratus around this
afternoon that will play havoc with the temperature forecast
tonight. In general, the with the ridge building overhead mostly
clear skies are expected for Sunday into Wednesday. This will
allow temperatures to cool into the -15 to -25 range for many
valley locations Sunday and Monday night. Gusty winds are expected
to develop on Monday in the Ray Mountains north of Fairbanks with
gusts up to 40 mph possible. This will likely cause wind chill
values to approach advisory criteria will result in blowing snow
that will reduce the visibility along the Dalton and Elliott
Highways at times.

North Slope and Brooks Range: The main issue overnight will be
wind chill related. Wind chill values around minus 50 combined
with sustained winds around 15 mph are currently being observed
at Point Lay. Because of this, I issued a Wind Chill Advisory for
zone 201. Wind chill issues will increased on Sunday night. High
pressure building east across the Chukchi Sea combined with an
inverted trough developing along the west coast on Sunday will
cause the winds along the Chukchi Sea Coast as well as the Western
Brooks Range to increase on Sunday. Late Monday and Tuesday a
trough will develop just north of the Brooks Range. This will
cause strong southerly gap winds to develop in the eastern Brooks
Range as well as strong easterly winds along the Beaufort Sea
coast. The winds, when combined with expected cold temperatures
will result in wind chill values reaching advisory criteria in
some locations. In addition, the strong winds will cause the
visibility to be reduced at times due to blowing snow.

West Coast and Western Interior: An upper low that is currently
over St. Lawrence Island will bring some snowfall to Norton Sound
and the Seward Peninsula tonight into Sunday into Monday. One to
two inches of snow is expected with this system. Any snowfall will
diminish Monday night as the upper low moves off to the west.
Increasing winds may cause wind chill values to approach advisory
criteria near Point Hope late Sunday along with areas just south
of the Brooks Range in zones 208 and 217.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
