.DISCUSSION...

.SYNOPSIS...
Upper level ridging continues over the Bering Sea early this
morning with an upper low over the Gulf of Alaska. Another upper
low is spinning over the Chukchi Sea and yet another over
Kamchatka. The eastern interior of Alaska lies in a deformation
zone. On the surface a trough lies across the central portion of
the state of Alaska with a front moving into Norton sound with
large storm complexes over the Gulf of Alaska and near Kamchatka.

The forecast will show a continued trend towards wetter and cooler
conditions across the forecast area. The Kamchatka and Chukchi
upper lows merge in the vicinity of the Bering strait on Sunday
bringing a long fetch of southwest flow to the west coast and
eastern interior of Alaska. This is a good pattern for enhanced
precipitation for the region. The pattern evolves into a broad
upper level trough over the northwest coast of Alaska to maintain
the cool wet pattern.

Central and Eastern Interior:

The forecast starts out on Saturday with the cooling trend
continuing. West to southwest flow aloft with waves moving through
the flow will bring some showers the region. There remains enough
instability with increase energy and negative lifted index values
to add some thunder from Fairbanks to the Alcan border. Sunday the
very moist upper flow has the potential of an inch to inch and a
half of rainfall between the Alaska and Brooks range including the
city of Fairbanks with the higher amounts on the south slopes of
the Brooks range and Fairbanks Hills. The wet pattern continues on
Monday for the region for additional rainfall. On Sunday have
maintained the gap wind for the Alaska range, however have trended
back on the stronger wind for the Fairbanks area based on a
downward trend in the models.

West coast and Western Interior:

An area of low pressure will move from the Bering Sea into Norton
Sound early Sunday morning. The low will bring heavy rainfall to
much of the west coast and western Interior as it moves through.
Southwest to west winds in the 25 to 35 mph range will develop
ahead of the low and will switch to the west to northwest after
the low passes into the interior and will likely produce elevated
water levels and will push waves high onto south and west facing
coastlines south of the Bering Strait. Rainfall will taper off by
Sunday evening along the coast and will taper off Sunday night
inland. A second wave of precipitation looks to move through on
Monday.

North Slope and Brooks Range:

Today a front will push from south to north along along the
eastern Arctic Plain and the Beaufort Sea Coast. An area of low
pressure will push east along the Brooks range on Sunday. This
will bring rainfall to the eastern Brooks Range on late Sunday
into Sunday night. Another wave will bring additional rainfall to
the Brooks Range Monday night into Tuesday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Higher than normal water
levels for south and west facing coastlines.

.FIRE WEATHER...

A relatively cool and very moist pattern is expected to persist
across the area through the weekend and into next week. Minimum
relative humidity values are expected to remain above 40 percent
for all areas into early next week. Showers are expected at times
across the Interior tonight into Saturday; however, wetting
rainfall will be somewhat hit or miss with these showers. A much
better chance for widespread wetting rainfall is expected Sunday
into Monday as a front pushes from west to east across the
Interior.

.HYDROLOGY...

A weather front will move east across the Interior Sunday and
Monday. Significant rainfall is expected with a broad area of 1 to
1.5 inches likely from the Alaska Range north to the Brooks
Range. Heavier amounts are possible in favorable upslope areas
such as the Alaska Range west of the Richardson Highway, including
Denali National Park, and the higher terrain north and east of
Fairbanks. Many rivers and streams are expected to rise early next
week in response to the rainfall no flooding is anticipated,
although the rising waters may cover some gravel bars that were
previously exposed.

...Strong Storm Over the West Coast Tonight Through Monday...

Gusty southwest to west winds in the 25 to 35 mph range will
develop over the Bering Strait, Norton Sound, the lower YK Delta,
and St. Lawrence Island this evening and will continue into
Monday morning as a strong low pressure system moves into the
central Bering Sea.

The strong onshore winds combined with low pressure are expected
to produce elevated tides as well as waves pushing above the high
tide levels on south and west facing coastlines of the Bering
Strait, Norton Sound, the YK Delta, and St Lawrence Island Sunday
and Monday. The latest storm surge forecasts indicate water levels
1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels late Sunday and Monday.

Computer models continue to indicate significant differences on
the timing, track and strength of this storm. Small changes in the
storm track will produce differences in where the highest surf
and beach erosion will occur.

Residents in these areas should monitor the latest forecasts for
updates on this developing storm and be prepared to take actions
to protect property. Another surge in winds and rain will move
over the lower YK Delta and eastern Norton Sound on Monday and
will likely produce another round of heavy rain, gusty winds and
elevated surf.
