  County and the lower Colorado River Valley Wednesday evening.
  Winds will continue into Thursday before decreasing in the
  afternoon.

* WINDS...Northwest to North wind 20 to 30 mph with gusts 40 to 50
  mph.

* IMPACTS...Drivers...especially of high profile vehicles...should

.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures five to 10 degrees above normal are
expected Tuesday, then a cold front will bring strong winds, chances
for valley rain and mountain snow, and much colder air to the
southern Great Basin Wednesday and to the Mojave Desert Wednesday
night. Below normal temperatures are expected Thursday through the
holiday weekend, with the coldest temperatures of the season so far
possible on Christmas morning.
&&

.SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night. The storm system which brought
strong winds to our area was spinning along the southern end of the
AZ/NM border early this afternoon, and winds had settled down
everywhere except Bullhead City. A brief period of ridging ahead of
the next storm will bring a few more degrees of warming tomorrow.
Winds will begin to increase Tuesday night, especially in the
Sierra, as the next storm swings into the northwestern states.
Hoisted a Wind Advisory for the Sierra beginning late Tuesday
evening, but most of the action for our area will be in the long
term period.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Monday.

A cold trough over the Pacific Northwest will dig south Wednesday
bringing strong winds to much of the area during the late morning
and afternoon. Winds will increase over the Sierra late Tuesday
night and then strengthen Wednesday morning over the eastern Sierra
with the potential for strong downslope winds developing. Cross
sections show the strongest winds to remain at mid slope and higher,
but will need to watch for strong winds potentially surfacing into
the Owens Valley. Winds across the remainder of the area are
forecast to increase by late morning and afternoon with the
strongest belt of winds generally from southern Inyo County across
Clark and into Lincoln County and areas south. Winds will likely
reach advisory levels over most of those areas with gusts
potentially 45-50 mph as surface pressure and thermal gradients
tighten. These winds will likely put outdoor Christmas decorations
in peril. A cold front is then forecast to move through the CWA
Wednesday afternoon and evening with the front likely reaching
southern Nevada early evening. Dynamics associated with the front
look to be rather strong with precipitation developing along and
behind the front across mainly across central Nye, Lincoln and
northern Mohave Counties. Although moisture will be rather limited,
there will be enough dynamics to squeeze what moisture is available.
This will also be the best chance for Las Vegas to see a few rain
drops as the front moves through. Precipitation chances will be a
bit higher in the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range Wednesday
evening, but any significant measurable precipitation is not likely.
Gusty winds will also occur post frontal, but will gradually
diminish.

Behind the front, temperatures will be much cooler with highs on
Thursday down about 10-15 degrees from Wednesday. Cool northerly
flow will continue Friday just ahead of another weak trough that is
forecast to dig into the area. This will provide additional colder
air for the weekend with the coldest temperatures of the season
likely. Current model output is showing low temperatures in the Las
Vegas valley in the mid to upper 20s. That would be that some
outlying areas such as Mountains Edge, Summerlin, and Henderson
could see lows in the upper teens.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Light and variable winds today will
become southwesterly around 6 knots after sunset, then go back to
light and variable late Tuesday morning. No operationally
significant clouds or weather expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Breezy north wind at KIFP and KEED should decrease
around sunset. Elsewhere, winds will generally be light and variable
through Tuesday before west to southwest winds begin to increase
over the Sierra Tuesday evening. No operationally significant clouds
or weather expected through Tuesday night.
