Issued at 454 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2017 Decided to go ahead and issue a winter storm watch for much of the eastern mts, from 00z Tue through 00z Wed. So, same ending time as ongoing watch, with a 6 hr delay in beginning time. Much of the lower elevations along the I25 corridor look like they will achieve advisory criteria. Moore && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 306 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2017 This evening a weak disturbance will move acrs nrn CO and is expected to bring a round of showers to the central mtns and probably the Pikes Peak area. There may also be some isolated showers over some of the other mtn areas. By late night most of the mtns areas should be dry, but showers will still be possible over the central mtns. Another disturbance moving across WY late tonight and Mon morning, will send a front southward thru eastern CO in the morning, bringing northerly winds that may be a bit gusty over the far southeast plains. In the afternoon the sfc winds become easterly over most of the southeast plains. Mon afternoon a new upper level trof will move into srn UT and nrn AZ. Ahead of this system, moisture will spread into the Continental Dvd with pcpn increasing by afternoon. In the afternoon hours pcpn will also spread across the high valley and the eastern mtns. Then by late afternoon isold to scattered showers will be possible over the southeast plains. The highest CAPE values are forecast to be over southern portions of the forecast area in the afternoon, but will put isold thunder in the afternoon forecast for all of the forecast area. High temps on Mon are expected to be around average. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday) Issued at 306 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2017 Monday night through Wednesday...The next low pressure system crosses the Four Corners Monday night, then the Rockies on Tuesday. Widespread precipitation is expected for all of the area Monday night through Tuesday, then activity will start to diminish quickly late Tuesday night, as the system pulls east across Kansas and Missouri through Wednesday. The best window for accumulating snowfall across the higher terrain looks like Monday night through Tuesday morning, and significant new snowfall is becoming an increasing probability. As for temps, a cold front will drop down the eastern plains Tue morning producing a very cold day on Tue. High temps Tue are forecast to be only in the 30s to around 40F. Temps on Wed will then attempt to climb into the 40s to near 50F as the system pulls away. Thursday and Friday...Temporary ridging across the Four Corners late Wednesday through Friday morning will provide for dry and warming conditions. Max temps Thu in the 50s will climb into the 60s to lower 70s for Fri. Isolated showers return to the higher terrain starting Fri aftn as the flow aloft becomes more w-sw, and moisture starts to advect back into the western half of Colorado. Later today and tonight, a Pacific disturbance will bring increasing snow showers to the Continental Divide, primarily north of Monarch Pass. Local accumulations of an inch or 2 will be possible under the heavier showers. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday Another developing storm system will bring the potential for moderate to heavy snow accumulations to the mountains with light to moderate accumulations for the valleys and adjacent plains beginning Monday afternoon out west, and spreading across the southeast mountains and plains Monday night and Tuesday. Impacts to travel in the form of snowpacked roads over and near the mountains will be the main concern, with lower elevations seeing periods of slushy snowfall accumulations at times, particularly late Monday night through Tuesday. This system does look colder than the previous several storms, so there is a greater potential for impacts to travel along I-25 over the Palmer Divide to Colorado Springs, and from Colorado City to Raton particularly for the Tuesday morning commute. The storm track and where the heaviest precipitation will fall is still in question, so please continue to monitor the latest forecasts for possible watches, warnings and advisories as these details become more certain. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
