The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Wind
Advisory, which is in effect from 11 AM this morning to 1 AM PDT
Friday. 

* AFFECTED AREA...Eastern Imperial County.
 
* TIMING...11 AM Thursday to 1 AM PDT Friday

* WINDS...Sustained westerly winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 
  to 50 mph. 

* IMPACTS...Difficult driving conditions, especially for high
  profile vehicles. In addition, briefly lowered visibilities to
  well under a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand.
  Affected roadways include, but are not limited to Interstate 8 
  and California State Route 78. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between
30 and 40 mph are expected, or wind gusts of between 40 and
58 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially
for high profile vehicles. In addition, strong winds over desert
areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under
a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry conditions will last through Thursday while cooler air
gradually filters into the region. A strong and expansive area of
low pressure will begin to affect the Desert Southwest Thursday
night, lasting into this weekend. This will result in breezy to
windy conditions on Thursday followed by much cooler temperatures
and a few showers or thunderstorms over far eastern portions of
Arizona for Friday. The below normal temperatures will persist
into early next week with dry conditions returning to the region
by Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...
Skies remain clear to mostly clear across the Southwest U.S.
while a large upper level trough is situated across the Northwest
U.S. Dry westerly flow still persists across the Desert Southwest
to the south of the large trough, but this will shift more out of
the southwest starting Thursday. This will occur as a strong
shortwave trough digs down along the western edge of the large
trough allowing it to dive into the Great Basin and southern
California on Thursday. Deepening surface low pressure to our
north on Thursday will promote a strong pressure gradient and
breezy to windy conditions across the region with gusts across
southeast California approaching Wind Advisory levels and gusts of
25-30 mph across southern Arizona.

Latest model runs continue to back off on the amount of low level
moisture that advects into southeast Arizona on Thursday and
Friday. There should be some isolated shower activity and maybe a
few thunderstorms starting Thursday afternoon across far eastern
Arizona, but this activity should mostly remain east of Globe. As
the trough moves into Arizona Thursday night into Friday, a
strong but dry cold front will track across the area. The cold
front will usher in the coolest air we have seen since mid May
with highs dropping to between 85-90 degrees Friday. These cooler
conditions will persist through the weekend with lower desert
highs generally only rising into the middle to upper 80s.

The deep trough will slowly track across the Intermountain West
and Desert Southwest this weekend before finally lifting off to
the east sometime early next week. The main trough axis likely
won't move into New Mexico until Tuesday when we finally start to
see a decent rise in temperatures. Long range model consensus then
shows a high amplitude ridge building into the Western U.S for
the middle of next week which will bring lower desert high
temperatures back well into the 90s.

.AVIATION... South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, and KSDL;
and Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:

Clear skies will continue with generally light and diurnal winds.
A few gusts around 15-20 kt are possible this afternoon out of the
southwest, before diminishing after sunset. Otherwise, aviation
concerns are expected to remain minimal.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Friday through Tuesday:
Cooler temperatures associated with a seasonably strong low
pressure area over the Great Basin will persist throughout the
weekend, about 10-15 degrees below seasonal normals. A slight
chance of thunderstorms is possible across parts of southern Gila
County, with the remainder of the forecast period dry. Humidities
will fall mainly into the 15-30 percent range with good overnight
recoveries.
