.SYNOPSIS...
Most residents of the Inland Northwest will wake up to snow on
the ground Sunday morning. Expect treacherous driving conditions
in the morning across much of central and eastern Washington as
well as north Idaho. Monday and Tuesday will be drier but
temperatures will remain well below average for early November.
The arrival of a wet frontal system Wednesday into Thursday will
push temperatures up closer to average for the second half of the
week into next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Monday night through Tuesday: Big changes this period from what we
experienced over the weekend. The winter storm moves quickly to
the east and is replaced by a dry upper level ridge. This will
usher out any moisture by Monday evening, leaving the region with
dry conditions, light winds, and clear skies. This, coupled with
the fresh snow cover will make for some bitter cold temperatures,
likely the coldest of the season so far. Monday night/Tuesday
morning we'll radiate well and likely see widespread lows in the
low to mid teens. Tuesday remains dry, but high clouds invade from
the northwest through the day. Both high temperatures Tuesday and
low temperatures Wednesday morning will be noticeably warmer than
24 hours previous as the ridge axis passes. 850 mb winds will
advect warmer air from the south while increased cloud cover
Tuesday night will keep us from radiating well, meaning lows in
the 20s.
Wednesday and Thursday: A low pressure system off the WA coast
begins to break down the ridge on or about Wednesday. Models are
still a bit uncertain as to how fast to bring this next system
inland, but have trended a bit slower recently. This means the
majority of the region would stay dry during the day Wednesday
before precipitation moves in from the southwest Wednesday evening
into Wednesday night. Timing is less certain, but the low and
associated cold pool remain over the Inland northwest through the
day Thursday, and precipitation amounts could be substantial.
There is plenty of moisture with this system as an atmospheric
river briefly takes aim at the region bringing PWATs near 0.7
inches. The Canadian and GFS are the wettest, showing 0.50-0.75”
through Thursday night while the EC is much drier. Precipitation
types will be more of a mixed bag with this system since it is
much milder, with 850 temps above freezing for most all locations.
Right now snow levels look to range from 1,500-2,500 ft near the
Cascades and northern mountains, to 3,000-4,500 ft for the Central
Panhandle and eastern WA. /bw
...SNOW STORM TO IMPACT THE INLAND NORTHWEST SUNDAY AND SUNDAY
NIGHT...
Tonight through Monday: Models are coming into better agreement
with a low pressure system that will track across the region on
Sunday. A surface low will track southward just off of southeast
BC tonight. Warm air advection will increase over the region ahead
of this low. Isentropic ascent will favor southeast to east-
central WA and into the Central Panhandle Mtns. This will
generate light snow across this area with around 1-3 inches of new
snow expected from around the Spokane Area to the Coeur d'Alene
Area to Pullman on the Palouse and into the Central Panhandle
Mtns. Higher accumulations closer to 3 inches will be favored in
the Central Panhandle Mtns where weak orographics will enhance
snow amounts.
The main show will come on Sunday. Models track the low pressure
circulation across Wenatchee late Sunday morning into early Sunday
afternoon. Then it will slowly progress eastward through the day
and track across Spokane by Sunday evening then across the Central
Panhandle Mtns Sunday night. There is surprising good agreement
amongst the models with the track of the surface low. This track
results in the bulk of the snow falling under a banded region
stretching from around Plain/Leavenworth across the upper basin
and into the Central Panhandle Mtns and lower portions of the
Northern Panhandle. This swatch stands the best chance to pick up
heavy snow in the range of 3 to 7 inches. Where the higher end of
this total ends up may wiggle a little bit south from around Moses
Lake to Sprague to Rockford or a little bit further north from
around Omak to Colville to Sandpoint. The forecast generally
paints these heavier accumulations between 5-6 inches right in the
middle primarily along the Highway 2 corridor. I went ahead and
upgraded the Winter Weather Advisories along this route to Winter
Storm Warnings. Areas just north and south of these heavier
amounts will be covered by Winter Weather Advisories. I did start
the Central Panhandle Mtns early with its warning to cover the
snow for tonight. An advisory would likely cover the snow for
tonight, but to decrease the potential for confusion, I decided to
just go with one long warning to encompass both events; including the
light snow for tonight and the heavy snow for Sunday/Sunday
night.
A tight pressure gradient is also expected to develop across the
Okanogan Valley on Sunday. This will result in breezy conditions
down the Okanogan Valley through Sunday afternoon into Sunday
evening. Winds are expected to be elevated enough to blow snow
around. Blowing snow may extend as far south as the Moses Lake
Area and east as Wilbur in the Upper Columbia Basin. Expect
reduced visibility due to blowing snow with the potential for
blizzard like conditions across Highway 2 from Wilbur to
Waterville.
Snow will exit by Monday with cold temperatures left in its wake.
Single digit temperatures will be possible in the mountain valleys
of the east slopes of the northern Cascades over to the Northeast
Mtns Sunday night as clouds clear out. Upper 20s to low 30s are
expected for highs across much of the central to northern portions
of the region both Saturday and Sunday. /SVH
Friday and Saturday: There is decent model agreement Fri and Sat
that our wet mid-week front will shear eastward Thursday night. We
continue to carry chances for showers over most of the Inland
Northwest into Friday. Post frontal convection may persist under
the lingering upper trough. The Cascades and Panhandle mountains

18Z TAFS: Winter has arrived early leading to a complex set of
TAFs. Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and Pullman will have a couple shots
for accumulating snow. The GFS, NAM, and ECMWF produce a swath of
light snow in the 21z-03z time frame. During the daylight hours,
snow will struggle to accumulate on pavement, but as the sun goes
down slushy accumulations will become more probable. A second more
significant round of snow will develop in the 09z-12z time frame
and will impact all airports. The pre-dawn arrival of snow will
allow snow to accumulate on runways. 3 to 6 inches for Wenatchee
and Chelan. 2 to 4 inches for Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Moses Lake,
and Pullman. A bit of slushy accumulation at Lewiston may even
