.SYNOPSIS...
A much cooler, wet and unsettled weather pattern will develop
tonight and continue through the weekend bringing heavy snow to
the mountains and the northern valleys through Saturday. Another
system is expected Sunday which has the potential of producing
valley snow to locations south of I 90 and in the Cascades.

.DISCUSSION...
Tonight through Friday...An upper level low will drop
south along the Washington coast tonight and slowly take up
position off the Columbia bar Friday afternoon. That low will then
eject through the forecast area Friday night and Saturday.
For this afternoon and this evening...West-northwest flow
associated with a fast moving cold front has resulted in light to
moderate snow showers across the central Idaho Panhandle
mountains this afternoon. This will likely continue through this
afternoon. A Winter Weather advisory for snow over Lookout Pass
was issued for the rest of the afternoon.
As the low shifts to the south cooler air will filter in from
the north and drop snow levels down to valley floors across the
northern zones by Thursday morning. Snow levels across the
southern zones will remain above 3500 feet through Friday morning.
Southwest to west flow will tap into deeper moisture and set the
stage for an extended period of light to moderate precipitation.
Shadowing will keep the basin dry and while some light
precipitation is likely south of about highway 2 the focus of the
heaviest precipitation will be across the Northern Washington
mountains and the north Idaho Panhandle. Lighter precipitation
amounts will be likely for the north Cascades and the central
Panhandle. The following cold front will move through the region
Thursday night and this is when the area will likely see the
heaviest precipitation. Then we expect drying from the west
through the day on Friday.
* Hazards: Moderate to heavy snow is expected from early
Thursday morning through Friday morning for the Okanogan
Highlands east to the north Idaho Panhandle. Total accumulations
through Friday morning will be around 4-7 inches for the
valleys and 17 inches or more for the mountains. This will
result in difficult driving conditions through the day. A Winter
Storm Warning has been hoisted to cover this area. For the
central Panhandle mountains there will be a 6-12 hour break in
the precipitation this evening, then the precipitation will
increase again although by Thursday morning the snow level will
be down to around 3000 feet. At this time it looks like there
will be enough accumulation down to the valley floor to hoist
another advisory at least through Thursday. The north Cascades
will have to be monitored tonight and Thursday as well for
moderate snow above the valleys late in the day Thursday and
Thursday night.
Friday night and Saturday...Conditions dry out quickly behind the
front. Orographic snow showers will be likely for the Cascades
crest and the Panhandle mountains but accumulations should be
around an inch or two. Otherwise conditions will dry out with
temperatures only managing to make it into the mid 30s to mid 40s,
which is 10-15 degrees below normal. Tobin
Saturday Night through Wednesday: Another trough will dig down the
west coast and through the Pacific Northwest Sat night through Sun
night. The bulk of the energy looks to be to our southwest.
However, given that trajectory, easterly flow will provide good
upslope flow into portions of the Cascades (south of Lake Chelan)
as well as a good chance of precipitation for areas south of I-90
across the Columbia Basin, Palouse, Spokane area. Have increased
our chance of precip for Sunday. Temperatures will remain quite
cold with high temps in the 30s. Sunday seems to be the better of
the days for the areas mentioned above to see their first sticking
snow. (how much? Maybe an inch or two, more towards the
Cascades...stayed tuned) Models show a shortwave ridge building in
behind the exiting system Monday. There could be some lingering
mountain showers Mon and Tuesday. Then Wed models are advertising
another trough moving into the Pac NW again. The latest EC has
trended toward the GFS, but there are still some timing/trajectory
differences. Have kept the chance of precip. Models have trended
colder today, and have lowered our daytime high temps Mon-Wed
about 5 degrees. Highs 10 and in some locations near 15 degrees
below average looks to be on tap for the beginning of next week.
Looks like winter temperatures are here...perhaps till next

18Z TAFS: A boundary stalling over the region will continue to
provide areas of light precipitation around the eastern TAF sites,
with mainly VFR conditions. However some localized MVFR conditions
possible in heavier precipitation or upslope areas toward the ID
Panhandle. Low pressure deepening off the coast tonight into early
Thursday will help develop the next round of precipitation going
into Thursday morning, with the increased potential for MVFR/IFR
conditions in the eastern TAF sites and possible renewed or
continued precipitation chances. Some light snow could be mixed
in around TAF sites in the morning, but the risk is limited.
