.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm will continue through Thursday night. Moderate to
heavy snow accumulations will occur over the mountains of far
north Idaho as well as central and northeast Washington. Mixed
wintry weather is expected for portions of the Columbia Basin
towards the Cascades tonight and Thursday. The widespread
precipitation will give way to hit or miss showers on Friday and
Friday night. This will be followed by a cold front which will
deliver breezy conditions and cooler temperatures for Saturday.
Dry weather is then expected for the latter half of the weekend
and into early next week as a strong ridge of high pressure builds
into the Pacific Northwest.

.DISCUSSION...
Today and tonight...The very moist warm front is moving through
the region this morning. Dual Pol radar data suggests the front is
moving north into the northeast Washington mountains....so the
messy changeover from snow to rain is still on track for the
valleys of northeast washington and north Idaho. Meanwhile to the
west the deep pool of cold air dammed against the Cascades is as
expected being very stubborn at eroding with freezing rain at
Moses Lake through the night and Wenatchee reporting what appears
to be a sleet and snow mixture based on web cams.

The Spokane area has been receiving freezing rain overnight to
the tune of about 1/4 inch of glaze so far. This is the result of
an easterly gradient continuously funneling cold air down the
Purcell Trench and into the Spokane River valley...causing the
freezing rain while the actual warm front pushes past the region
and to the north. With a lot more moisture upstream to enhance
into precipitation this morning...as long as this gradient hold
sway the freezing rain will continue. The HRRR model best
captures the gradient evolution over the last few hours...and this
model suggests the gradient will shift to a more southeast
orientation after 7am this morning...allowing the surface
temperature to rise above freezing at Spokane. With a quarter of
an inch of ice already existing at the NWS office...an Ice Storm
Warning will be issued imminently for the Spokane area until 10
am even though the temp should be above freezing well before
then...the existing ice on roads will simply become a frictionless
surface when the garden variety rain begins...with nothing good
resulting for the morning commute. The existing WSW for the deep
basin and Cascades lee zones will be changed to an Ice Storm
Warning as well...where freezing rain is imminent or will continue
until it simply tapers off after 10 am or noon as flow off the
Cascades shifts to a more the westerly direction. The Winter Storm
warnings for the mountains ringing the basin and the Okanogan
Valley will remain valid as well...and snow is still the expected
dominant meteor in these zones with a messy change over in the
valleys today.

Late today a cold front will sweep through and shove the deep
moisture feed off to the east. Plenty of showers will still
prowl the area into tonight especially in the orographically
favorable regions. /Fugazzi

Friday: The deep plume of subtropical moisture responsible the current
heavy precipitation will be well south of the area but the threat
for precipitation will continue as one last trof of low pressure
passes through the region. As precipitable water values dip near
three tenths of an inch, we are not concerned with heavy
precipitation amounts for any areas east of the Cascade Crest yet
persistent showers into the Northeastern Mountains and Idaho
Panhandle will bring the potential for upwards of 0.25-0.50" over
the 24 hour period. Heavier amounts between 0.50-1.50" will be
possible along the immediate Cascade Crest. The good news is most
of this will fall as snow in the mountains and mix of rain/snow in
the lowlands as snow levels dip between 2000-3000 feet north and
3000-4000 feet south. Mountain passes are likely to experience
periods of light to moderate snow accumulations but little to no
travel impacts are expected in the lower elevations.

Winds will gusty Friday with speeds approaching 15-25 mph and gusts into
the 30-45 mph range. We may need to issue low-end wind advisories
but this will be addressed later once the winter highlights are
down. These winds will allow for better mixing and we should
finally see all the cold air in the lee of the Cascades completely
scrubbed out and temperatures warming into the mid to upper 30s
and lower 40s. The combination of winds and above freezing air
will continue to melt lower elevation snows and add to runoff.
Consequently, flooding issues will peak late Friday then begin to
recede overnight into Saturday as cooler temperatures, drier
weather, and decreasing winds return.

Saturday through Wednesday: A ridge of high pressure strengthens over
the Northwestern US delivering dry weather and mix of sun and
clouds. There are a few weak waves denting the ridge at times
which will bring some midlevel cloudiness and may stretch areas of
stratus socked in the valleys into areas of flurries but cannot
be certain at this point and will refrain from any mention of
pcpn. Otherwise, the main story will be strengthening inversions
and potential for fog and low clouds as the warmer, most stable
air settles over the regions snow pack.

Wednesday night through Thursday: The ridge looks to shift east allowing
a mild and wet storm system into the region. Tough to say what
the surface temperatures will look like at this point but leaning
toward a mostly rain event for the lowlands and only high mountain
snow with snow levels averaging 4000-7000 ft. This may lead to a
renewed threat for hydrological problems so stay tuned. /sb

INTO THURSDAY MORNING...

No big changes to the previous forecast. Strong warm over-
running moisture continues to push through the region. Light FZRA
is being reported at KEAT/KMWH and is expected to continue
through 16-18z with cigs/vsby dropping back to IFR/LIFR after
07-08z...then improvement after 18z. Between 0.05-0.10 of an inch
of ice accumulation will be possible by early Thursday morning.
KLWS/KPUW have turned to rain with cigs/vsby VFR/MVFR. Of more
importance will be a period of LLWS through the morning. The
colder air will take longer to mix out at KGEG/KSFF/KCOE with a
2-3 hour period of freezing rain possible between 06-09z...mainly
at KGEG with the precipitation changing over to rain after 10-12.
