.SYNOPSIS...Clear and chilly conditions tonight over inland
valleys with widespread lows in the 30s. 20s expected in the
southern Salinas Valley. Dry weather returns Thursday with cool
daytime highs followed by a colder night into Friday morning. High
pressure keeps things dry and seasonable through the weekend.
Clouds may increase by Christmas day as the next front approaches.

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:10 PM PST Wednesday...Skies clear out
rapidly in the wake of the cold front that pass through the region
early this morning. Rainfall totals ranged from a tenth to two
tenths in the North Bay and East Bay Mountain and coastal ranges
with the Middle Peak RAWS receiving an impressive 0.56" overnight.
Lower elevation and valley locations received only a few
hundredths of an inch. While every drop counts, last nights rain
did little to bump up the percentage of normal for this time of
year. Most locations remain around 50% or less of normal.

The main concern tonight will be clear and dry conditions and
abundant radiation cooling across the region sending overnight
lows plummeting into the 30s across inland valleys. Higher
elevation locations and areas near the coast will remain slightly
warmer with lows in the 40s. The area of focus tonight will be
the southern Salinas Valley where temperatures are forecast to
drop well below freezing. Lows are expected to bottom out in the
upper teens and 20s in the coldest inland valley locations.
Therefore a Freeze Warning was issued for the southern Monterey
County valleys including the Salinas Valley tonight from 1 am to 9
am Thursday. While chilly conditions are expected elsewhere winds
will likely keep them from dropping below the 28 degree
threshold. That being said patchy frost will be likely tonight.

Afternoon highs on Thursday will again be on the cool side as the
winter solstice (the shortest day of the year), a cold airmass,
clear skies and light winds combine and limit the heating
potential for the day. Even colder temperatures are forecast for
Thursday night as clear skies allow for an abundance of
radiational cooling. Many locations will see overnight lows drop
near or below freezing with more widespread frost expected across
the region. Widespread 20s and lower 30s expected. Freeze Warnings
and Frost Advisories will likely be issued for Thursday night.

From previous discussion...Temperatures will rebuild a bit over
the weekend as the ridge of high pressure off the coast rebuilds
back toward our region. During the days 60 to 65 can be expected
for the northern half with 65 to 70 likely for the southern half.
A few lower 70s are likely on Sunday in Monterey County.

We are still keeping a close eye for Christmas Day into Tuesday as
models bring a front close to our through our region during that
time. Right now amounts appear to be light (potentially values
close to what we saw last night). However, this feature is still
quite a few days out, so will be interesting to see if it trends
wetter or even stays to our north. For now will keep slight chance
to chance PoPs going.

.AVIATION...As of 09:30 PM PST Wednesday...For 06z tafs. VFR
conditions with mainly clear skies to prevail through the period
for all sites. Earlier breezy winds have begun to decrease and
will continue to do so through the night.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. West to northwesterly winds tonight around
10 kt. Winds will remain light through the period.

SFO Bridge Approach...Same as KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with generally light winds.
Replacement parts for KMRY ASOS expected tomorrow, AMD NOT SKED
will remain in the taf until maintenance is complete.

.MARINE...as of 08:12 PM PST Wednesday...Gusty northerly winds
will continue through tonight behind the earlier cold frontal
passage. Gusty winds will continue to generate hazardous
conditions via steep swell, especially for the northern outer
waters. Winds will decrease across the waters tomorrow and through
the weekend.
