.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)

A very dry and cold air mass remained in place across the Upper
Midwest this afternoon. This has again led to dew points in the
teens below zero with humidity levels in the 20% range. A storm
system over the Rockies, and Northern Plains will move rapidly
southeast across the Plains tonight, and into the central
Mississippi River Valley early tomorrow morning. Mid to high level
cloudiness will be the extent of any weather related concerns. Only
areas southwest of the Minnesota River Valley will obtain any
boundary layer moisture to bring a slight chance of flurries for
tonight, and into Saturday morning. Any snowfall accumulations will
be confined to the far southwest part of Minnesota. Due to the
increase in cloud cover tonight, temperatures will not drop as
rapidly, and won't be as low with readings in the upper single
digits to lower teens by Saturday morning. A few areas in central
Minnesota, and west central Wisconsin may see readings drop to
around zero before denser cloud cover develops later tonight.
Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures rising a
few degrees higher than today, mainly in the low to mid 20s.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

Biggest concern in the long term is the potent clipper that will
impact us Sunday afternoon into Monday. After that, we remain cold
though Wednesday, with a rapid swing the other direction in
temperatures as ridging builds in and the main northern jet lifts
back into Canada.

Our wave for Sunday currently has a strong appearance on GOES-16
channel 9 water vapor imagery off the Washington coast. It will come
crashing ashore in BC/Wash later this afternoon and by 00z, will be
within the upper air observation network, which will hopefully help
iron out the differences we continue to see in guidance with where
the heaviest snow will fall. There are a couple of issues at play
with this snow, and they are overhead now, dry low level air coming
from an arctic high and the location of the strong temp gradient at
h7. That arctic high gave a PW this morning here of only 0.05" with
dewpoints this afternoon -10 to -20 deg F. This airmass will slide
into the Great Lakes this weekend, but easterly low level winds will
mean we'll have dry air eating into northeast side of the precip.
That h7 gradient Today resides from NW Montana to the Omaha area.
Saturday, an h7 ridge will work across the northern CONUS, which
will help nudge this very strong gradient northeast and where the
gradient sets up Saturday will lay down the track for the heavy snow
to follow. The northern solution this time around is the MPAS, with
the GFS still setting the southwest bounds. In between is the NAM
and ECMWF, though the NAM favors the GFS while the ECMWF favors the
MPAS northern idea. Basically, this a role reversal from what we saw
with the Feb 24th snow storm. Though one key difference between the
24th and Sunday is Sunday will not have a convectively unstable
environment in Iowa, which means we will not be seeing widespread
thunderstorms developing to our south whose latent heat release
would help pull everything south as well.  Basically, the prospects
of the northern solution working out look better than they did with
the 24th. From the forcing perspective, given the strength of the
temperature gradient, we'll have an equally strong response in the
FGEN end of things. The heaviest snow is expected Sunday afternoon,
and when this happens, the NAM shows strong frontal forcing and
strong isentropic lift on the 290K surface matching up with each
other, so we feel the higher end potential for QPF will happen with
this, which is in the ballpark of 0.6". This would work out to a
healthy band of 6-9" of snow. From the GFS, this would fall mostly
SW of the MN River, MPAS would take it down I-94, with the NAM and
ECMWF shooting between the MN River and I-94. Given these amounts,
we did issue a winter storm watch. It comes up to the MS River,
which is a little far north when looking at our current snow fall
forecast (which has the max running down the MN River), but we
wanted to account for the northern solutions that we are seeing.

Behind this system, another cold high pressure will work across the
state, though not as cold as what we are seeing today. This will
give us a couple of more days Tuesday and Wednesday where highs stay
in the 20s with lows in the single digits. However, Wednesday night,
this high moves into the Great Lakes, which puts us into return flow
and rapidly warming temperatures as we transition to ridging aloft
as well. For precip chances, those look to now come Thursday
night/Friday as a cold front works across the area. Given the
warmth, p-type looks to be a rain/mix and have the current types
tied more or less to a diurnal temperature trend.

prevail through 18z Saturday. Some MVFR cigs/vsbys may affect
