UPDATE...High resolution guidance is indicating the potential
for patchy fog in the far eastern zones (e.g. Crenshaw, Covington,
Okaloosa) overnight where winds will remain very light and skies
will be clear. Already seeing some light fog develop near
Crestview, so have decided to include patchy fog for the far
eastern zones.

Satellite imagery shows a stratus deck steadily making progress
eastward into central MS. Adjusted sky grids to account for
increasing clouds over inland SE MS by midnight, becoming mostly
cloudy in the western zones overnight. Otherwise, the forecast is
in good shape and we are on track for lows in the low to mid
30s, except upper 30s to around 40 at the coast. 34/JFB

...VERY COLD AIRMASS STILL ON TRACK TO IMPACT THE FORECAST AREA
NEXT WEEK...

NEAR TERM /Now Through Saturday/...Mid and upper level trough over
the Great Lakes and northeast CONUS combined with upper ridging
across the southwestern states will lead to continued northwesterly
flow aloft over the local region. At the surface, a large area of
high pressure extends across the area from eastern Texas north
and east toward the Carolinas and Mid Atlantic states. Decreasing
northerly winds will allow for some continued advection of dry air
into the region from the north and few clouds are expected into
the overnight period. Mid and upper level moisture will begin to
increase as we head towards sunrise on Saturday, especially over
western portions of the area where greater cloud cover is
expected. Temperatures overnight will be similar to last night and
will remain around 5 degrees below normal for this time of year.
Expect low 30s for inland locations to mid 30s near I-10. The
immediate coast should be in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees.
Increasing clouds on Saturday will not hamper heating much, with
low to mid 50s expected north and west to near 60 degrees across
our southeastern counties where cloud cover is expected to be
slowest to fill in Saturday afternoon. 05/RR

SHORT TERM /Saturday night Through Monday night/...Primary
concern for the short term forecast period will be the expected
onset of the bitterly cold temperatures and the very slight
potential for some wintry precipitation over the far northwestern
portions of the forecast area. A cold front will push across our
forecast area Saturday evening, which will mark the beginning of
an extended period of much below normal temperatures across our
forecast area that will last into next week. Low level cloud cover
will increase from west to east across our forecast area Saturday
evening into late Saturday night as deep layer moisture also
increases across western portions of the area late Saturday night
as a weak impulse embedded within the northwest flow aloft
approaches our region. Weak ascent ahead of this feature will result
in the development of patches of light rain over southeast
Mississippi and adjacent southwest Alabama late Saturday night,
that will spread east across the entire forecast area Sunday and
early Sunday evening (New Years Eve). Very cold air will begin to
spill southeastward into the central Gulf Coast region late
Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. As this occurs, there will be
a brief and very slight chance for the rain to become mixed with
light freezing rain or light sleet from late Sunday afternoon to
early Sunday evening over our far northwestern zones. This potential
is most likely to occur primarily over northern Choctaw. No accumulations
are expected. A cold rain is anticipated elsewhere across the forecast
area. The extremely cold airmass will be filtering into our forecast
area from the northwest during the late Sunday evening and overnight
hours into early Monday morning, but the upper level energy producing
the precipitation is expected to be moving on off to the east of
our forecast area and precipitation will be ending from northwest
to southeast across the area during the evening hours. As the
bitterly cold air becomes entrenched over the area late Sunday
night into New Years Day we expect dry conditions. Near record
cold low temperatures are possible. Hard Freeze Watches and
Warnings, and Wind Chill Advisories will likely be issued late
tonight and continue to be required through much of next week.

LONG TERM /Tuesday Through Friday/...Very cold conditions continue
through the long term period. Hard Freeze Warnings will likely be needed
for the overnight hours through the period, as well as continued
Wind Chill Advisories. Daytime highs will continue well below normal
through the period as well, with maximum temperatures struggling
to make it out of the 30s at times. Low temperatures through the
period may continue to approach record levels. No precipitation
expected in the long term period. 12/DS

MARINE...Northerly offshore flow will decrease this evening and
become light through the overnight hours. Winds will increase around
daybreak on Saturday but will generally remain out of the north or
northwest through the day, becoming light and northeasterly for
Saturday night into early Sunday. A strong cold front will traverse
the area late Sunday into Monday and moderate northerly flow will
follow in the wake of this feature. The chance for rain will
increase with this cold frontal passage for Sunday and Monday.
Building northerly flow behind the front Sunday night into early
Tuesday will likely require a small craft advisory. 05/RR

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

A strong cold front will push across the region late this weekend
and will bring an extended period of very cold temperatures to our
region through much of next week. A hard freeze will be possible
over locations especially along and to the northwest of Interstate
65 by Monday night, when overnight lows could drop into the upper
teens to around 20 degrees. Another hard freeze will be possible
again across this same general location again Tuesday and Wednesday
nights. Wind chills may also fall into the single digits both
Monday and Tueday nights.

There will be a lingering chance of light precipitation over
interior portions of southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama
as the colder airmass arrives late Sunday afternoon into Sunday
evening. There may be a brief period of a wintry mix of light
freezing rain and sleet over a small portion of the area, primarily
up toward Chowctaw county, before precipitation ends Sunday
evening. No accumulation is currently expected.
