...Heavy wet snow through Friday night in Siskiyou County...

.Strong upslope flow over the Mt. Shasta area with heavy 
precipitation will has driven snow levels down to near the 
surface. The heaviest snow will be above 4000 feet along Highway 
89. There will be some help from warm ground to limit travel 
impacts this evening. However, snow levels will be at or near the
surface around Mt. Shasta City and adjacent portions of 
Interstate 5 through Friday morning. The warming of the day will 
cause snow levels to rise modestly but snow levels will fall again
on Friday night. The snow level will be higher in other portions 
of Siskiyou County through Friday with significant snow expected 
above 4500 feet. The upslope effect will not be as strong on
Friday night but it will be colder with snow levels falling to
valley floors. Residents and travelers should be prepared for 
wintry conditions.

* Timing: Snow will begin again later this morning around 8 to 9am.

.UPDATE...A complex and powerful storm system will move into the
region this afternoon and evening, producing strong winds and
plenty of rain through tonight and into Friday. With cold air
filling behind the system, showers will then continue through the
weekend, and some thunderstorms are possible for many areas as
well. Snow levels should remain relatively high today, with the
exception of the Mount Shasta area, but all areas will drop
tonight and tomorrow. For this morning's update, have made
some changes to ad thunder wording to Friday and Saturday, and
adjusted some snow levels as per observations and expected
trends. Also, as winds have already increased across the inland
valleys, have moved up the start time for the wind headlines in
the Shasta Valley and the Rogue Valley near Ashland. Will focus
much of our efforts today on refining tonight's event and this
weekend's showers and thunder, as well as the potential for a
freeze in some agricultural areas Sunday morning. For more

.AVIATION...06/18Z TAF CYCLE...Expect some showers area wide
this afternoon. MVFR prevails along the coast with areas
of IFR from Cape Blanco southward. Mostly VFR is expected across
the rest of the CWA, except in the Mount Shasta region where MVFR is
expected. Terrain will also be obscured. A strong front will push
into the area tonight with a period of steadier precipitation.
Strong winds will occur east of the Cascades and in the Shasta
Valley preceding the front. Low level wind shear is possible,
especially along the coast and west of the Cascades, but at the very
least, turbulence will cause some bumpy takeoffs and approaches
at all terminals. Also, a period of very strong winds will develop
overnight into Friday morning along the coast and over the east
side. Wind gusts at KOTH and KLMT could exceed 45kt. Wind
gusts of 25-35 kt are also possible at KMFR/KRBG. Overall,
expect variable ceilings with MVFR/IFR at the coast and a mix of
MVFR/VFR inland overnight through Friday morning. -Spilde

.MARINE...Updated 600 AM PDT Thursday 6 April 2017...A cold front
will weaken as it moves across the coastal waters this morning. A
powerful storm center will move inside of 130 west longitude off the
Oregon coast tonight. This low will bring storm force winds and
gales to the coastal waters Thursday night into Friday. It will also
bring very high and very steep seas early Friday morning into early
Friday evening with peak seas of around 25 feet at 12 seconds. Seas
will diminish Friday night but likely remain high into early Sunday.
Improvement will be brief as a weaker front will move onshore Sunday
evening and produce high seas. The active weather pattern will
continue into next week.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 613 AM PDT Thu Apr 6 2017/

SHORT TERM...The focus this morning remains on an unseasonably
strong storm that will bring strong winds, heavy rain, and
mountain snow over the next couple of days. The initial frontal
system remains along the coast this morning, but upslope
precipitation has already begun over Siskiyou County. It is
raining across the western part of the county as well as around
Mt. Shasta, and this will likely continue today. Elsewhere, rain
is spottier, and many of the valleys may continue to get skipped
over today due to increasing downslope winds.

The big storm is now starting to spin up around 40N 140W, and it
will continue to strengthen through tomorrow morning as it makes
the turn toward the north along the PacNW coast. Strong winds and
heavy rain are still expected in many locations tonight through
tomorrow, and the going forecast has it all covered. However,
there were two significant changes made to the forecast this
morning.

The first was to add the northern Coos Coast, including Coos Bay,
North Bend, and Reedsport, to the high wind warning. Typically,
these locations are blocked from the very strong south-southeast
winds associated with strong low pressure systems. However, in
this case, models are showing the potential for a sting jet to
bring high southwest winds to the north coast on the back side of
this system. The saying goes: "Beware the poisonous tail of the
bent back occlusion," and model cross sections show strong
downward vertical motions in that portion of the storm as it
passes, which may transport strong winds aloft to the surface.
This is an unusual occurrence, and it is not certain to occur.
However, the potential impact is high enough that it was deemed
prudent to include these areas in the high wind warning.

The second change was to issue a winter storm watch for the Mt.
Shasta area. As we've been talking about for a couple of shifts
now, thermodynamic conditions appear favorable for heavy snow in
the Mt. Shasta area tonight into Friday morning as heavy
precipitation rates drive snow levels to near the surface.
Parameters remain marginal, and road/ground temperatures are warm,
so confidence is not high that snow will accumulate all the way
down into the city. For this reason, a short lead time watch was
issued in order to give some heads up to travelers and residents
but also to give subsequent shifts one more run of models before
deciding whether to issue a warning. -Wright

LONG TERM...Confidence remains high in an active pattern
persisting across the Pacific Northwest this weekend into early
next week. Saturday will be the chilliest day with the long wave
trough moving onshore. This will keep showers going across the
CWA, most numerous along and west of the Cascades and also in
northern California. With the coldest air aloft moving overhead,
snow levels will be lower than they usually are this time of
year...down as low as 2500 feet west of the Cascades in the
morning...especially where the heavier showers set up. Some snow
impacts are possible over the higher passes, like Lake of the
Woods, Siskiyou Summit and perhaps near Mount Shasta. Expect snow
levels to come up to around 3500 feet during the day.

Showers will wane after sunset as heights rise and short wave
ridging builds into the area Saturday night into Sunday. Depending
on the amount of clearing we get, there is a good chance of frost
and perhaps even some freezing temperatures in the west side
valleys by Sunday morning. Right now, we're going with a low of
32 degrees in Medford, so some of the typically colder surrounding
areas could get into the upper 20s.

Most areas are likely to be dry on Sunday, but the next front will
quickly approach the coast with rain arriving Sunday afternoon,
then spreading inland Sunday evening and night. Moist onshore
flow will produce showers across most of the region on Monday,
then perhaps we'll get a bit of a break Monday night.

Subtle model differences show up Tuesday into Wednesday next week
with respect to the next system arriving from the Pacific. Models
are in general agreement that another deep upper trough will dig
into the NE Pacific, but the ECMWF is a bit faster than the GFS
with ejecting a surface low toward the coast on Tuesday. Both
models do bring the long wave trough onshore Wednesday into
Thursday. Suffice it to say, confidence is high that the pattern
will remain active, but confidence in the details with respect to
timing and strength of these systems remains a bit lower than
