.DISCUSSION...Smoke persists as a problem in southern Oregon and
northern California as wildfires continue to burn across the
region. While there has been some improvement in smoke coverage
for several locations today, Air quality alerts, in coordination
with Oregon Health Authority and local governments, continue for
much of the region as unfortunately, any improvement will be
brief, and once high pressure returns tomorrow, the smoke will
return in force as well.
With the ridge building through the weekend, temperatures are
expected to climb to values well above normal, and model guidance
suggests daytime highs during the weekend could approach daily
records. The catch is, what impact will the smoke have on these
highs? A thick layer of smoke can block out enough incoming sun to
keep highs 7 or 8 degrees below guidance values, while a thin
layer may only drop highs by a degree or two. Much will depend on
the smoke, and confidence in this highly variable parameter is
low, so have trended towards a middle solution of the two. This
keeps most areas under record values, but will still be up to 20
degrees above normal for this time of year. With this in mind, and
the added stress from smoke, have issued an Excessive Heat Watch
for much of inland southwest Oregon west of the Cascades, and for
the Klamath, Salmon, and Sacramento River Valleys of Siskiyou
county. Many locations in these areas will be very hot through the
holiday weekend, and will see little cooling overnight. Those
without access to air conditioning may find themselves at a catch
22: open the windows to cool off at night but let in the smoke,
or keep the smoke out but keep the daytime heat in. Temperatures
will cool slightly heading into next week, but will remain above
normal through the forecast period.
The shift in the pattern that will bring some slight cooling early
next week will also produce the threat of thunderstorms, first
across Northern California by Sunday afternoon, then into much of
Southern Oregon by Monday or Tuesday afternoon. These will mostly
result from increased moisture streaming north between high
pressure to the southeast and low pressure centered off the
California coast. At this time range, confidence is on the low
side, and models can't seem to arrive at any consensus on the
pattern. As a result, timing could shift by a day or two before
the convection actually arrives. Have kept a slight chance of
thunder in the forecast, but expect the areas and timing to change
over the coming days as confidence improves.

Confidence is high that winds will reach gale force south of Gold
Beach and beyond 5 NM from shore late Thursday morning. This Gale
event is not expected to last longer than 24 hours and winds are
expected to decrease below Gale by Friday morning. Seas are likely

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 500 AM PDT Wednesday 30 August 2017...
The main updates this morning were to issue a red flag warning for
much of southern Lake County and eastern Modoc County this afternoon
and early evening, and also to issue a fire weather watch for the
Kalmiopsis Wilderness area including the Chetco Bar Fire on Thursday
night into Friday morning. The red flag warning covers much of the
area that received lightning last evening. But, the concern is for
low humidity and gusty southwest winds ahead of a dry cold front.
The front will at least bring slight cooling today. Another benefit
is that air quality should be temporarily improved in much of
southern Oregon after 5 PM this evening into Thursday morning.
The other short term concern is for the development of easterly
winds tonight. Humidity recovery will still be moderate to good
tonight, but a fire weather watch has been issued for Thursday night
as easterly wind near the Curry County coast will be stronger with
gusts to 30 mph, and humidity recovery will be poor to moderate
across the area. Overnight easterly winds will be weaker in the
following nights but humidity recovery may be even worse into early
next week.
As an upper ridge moves onshore Friday, the low level flow will also
turn onshore, cooling and moistening the coastal areas. However, it
will heat up quite a bit inland. Friday through Sunday will be quite
hot, then it will be nearly as hot early next week.
The models are showing increasing monsoonal moisture moving
up on the backside of the ridge into our area Sunday along with a
weak to moderate trigger. This brings the possibility of
thunderstorms back into the picture. Next Monday and Tuesday now
look more favorable than Sunday for thunderstorms, and an unstable
air mass may persist through mid-week. -DW
