Issued at 705 PM EST Sat Dec 23 2017

Snow will spread across the area on Sunday. Accumulations of 3 to
6 inches are expected across most locations but higher amounts in
the 5 to 9 inch range will be possible through Christmas day near
Lake Michigan. Much colder air will arrive Christmas night and
continue through the entire week. High temperatures will be in
the teens with low temperatures down into the single digits above
and below zero. Wind chill values will likely be below zero at
times as well. Periodic lake effect snow will also be possible
through the week.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Sunday)

...Holiday Wishes Answered...White Christmas On the Way...

Holiday wishes appear to have been answered, and in a big way for
our region. Models continue to trend stronger and deeper with some
healthy snow amounts now expected across entire forecast area on
Sunday and into Christmas day near Lake Michigan.

Potent Pacific short wave and PV anomaly will move across the area
Sunday. Light snow already developing upstream across central plains
and this will expand eastward overnight and increase in coverage and
intensity. Strong and persistent system relative isentropic lift
expected over a deep and saturated column on Sunday ahead of upper
trough. Mixing ratios not overly impressive, around 2 g/kg on NAM12,
limited by lack of better GOMEX moisture influx which is generally
cut off. However, expect this system to be rather proficient given
this isentropic lift in addition to deep PV intrusion with 1.5 PVU
surface down to 500mb and even closer to 600mb in base of trough.
Also seeing a healthy FGEN response across central areas with
some chances for mesobanding along a narrow corridor north of
925mb track over central to south central areas which could lead
to some enhanced amounts if and where this develops.

Bufkit soundings also showing a deep and saturated DGZ with good
lift and snow ratios likely around 15:1 and possibly approaching
20:1. These ratios combined with most model QPF and above parameters
yielding a solid 3 to 5 inches with some amounts pushing 6 to 7
inches where better ratios and higher model QPF could coincide with
stronger lift. Also going to see a healthy but brief lake enhanced
response as low pressure system moves east and cyclonic flow turns
off lake and translates eastward. Delta Ts nearing 20 with 0-2km
ThetaE lapse rates of -1 to -1.5 K/km on back side of system.

SREF snow plumes for most sites in CWA ranging from 3 to 6 inches
with mean of 4 inches and this looks very reasonable given above
parameters. With lack of GOMEX contribution or a deep and closed
system prefer to lean toward these widespread advisory level amounts
for now and will issue a winter weather advisory for entire area.
With the lake contribution Sunday night into Monday morning expect
additional accums to push Laporte, southern Berrien and Northwest
St. Joseph IN into warning criteria. After collaboration with
neighbors opted to push these counties into a warning with longer
duration synoptic plus lake effect snow as well as increased
winds and blowing snow on Christmas day.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday Night through Saturday)

...Prolonged and Significant Arctic Intrusion On Way...

Main story in the long term remains the very cold arctic air which
will likely be around for over a week with possible colder air
next weekend. A lot of uncertainty continues surrounding pcpn
chances through the period but very cold air much more certain.

Main blast of polar air expected later on Christmas day into
Christmas night. Upper level height and jet pattern most impressive
with western ridge extending north to polar circle and into northern
Siberia. Even some phasing seen with a Siberian ridge and northward
moving jet energy near the Kara Sea. This type of phasing rather
rare and only seen by this meteorologist during very cold outbreaks.

850mb temps down to -20C across the north and -15C in the south on
Tuesday. With expected deeper snow cover and arctic high pressure
nosing in the chances for below zero temperatures are increasing
with light winds and fresh snow cover. Final numbers will be
dictated by lake clouds but southern areas likely have best shot
and lowered blends by several degrees.

Lake effect snow will be ongoing Christmas day into Tuesday but DGZ
will be nearing ground level and with a NW fetch originating out of
WI where airmass will be quite dry, only expecting smaller
snowflakes and lighter accums within deeper arctic regime despite
strong delta Ts. 0-2km ThetaE values even rise above zero owing to
the very dry airmass.

Rest of long term continues to be dominated by below normal
temperatures and uncertainty regarding synoptic pcpn chances. No
course but to run with blends though will taper any higher PoPs
owing to the varying model solutions and lack of run to run
consistency. GFS has shown signs of an even colder influx of air
next weekend but that will be left as conjecture and discussion
for now.

Intense upstream jet streak digging through the base of high plains
centered upper trough this morning has elicited a strong frontal
scale circulation through cntrl/ern NE and expect this to carry ewd
overnight then ne as parent sw trough lifts out through the ern OH
valley. Thus rapid overspread/newd expansion of snow shield expected
by mid morning with rapid deterioration by late morning timed with
maximizing cross isobaric flow and rather deep ascent/moisture plume.
Given observed mesobanding over NE no doubt a period of heavy snow
likely across the terminals beginning 15-16Z and persisting through
much of this aftn with LIFR assured. Thereafter transient yet
intense lake enhanced band expected to pivot across the KSBN
terminal and likely to reach into the KFWA terminal for a time this
evening.

Otherwise snow diminishes quickly toward late evening with
transition to lake effect north into MI leaving behind MVFR cigs
overnight.
