The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
  Chautauqua County in southeastern Kansas...

* Until 1130 PM CDT.

* At 533 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing 
  extremely heavy rain across Chautauqua county. Radar estimates 
  suggest 4 to 6 inches of rain has occurred since yesterday 
  evening, with additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches 
  possible through the evening.

* The main flooding culprits will be small creeks and streams, 
  streets, country roads, poor drainage areas and other low lying 
  spots.

* Some locations that may experience flooding include...
  Sedan, Cedar Vale, Peru, Chautauqua, Elgin, Niotaze and Hale. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams.
Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away.

...THE FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1130 PM CDT FOR
CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY...

At 651 PM CDT, Doppler radar continued to indicate showers and 
thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Radar 
estimates indicate 3 to 7 inches of rain have fallen since yesterday 
evening, heaviest over the northwest quarter of the county. 
Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible through 
the evening.

The main flooding culprits will be streets, country roads, poor 
drainage areas and other low lying spots. Additionally, significant 
rises are likely on various small streams and creeks, including the 
Caney and Middle Caney affecting Cedar Vale, Elgin and Sedan.

Some locations that may experience flooding include...
Sedan, Cedar Vale, Peru, Chautauqua, Elgin, Niotaze and Hale. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams.
Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the 
dangers of flooding.

Even though the threat for heavy rain has ended, excessive runoff 
from heavy rain since yesterday evening will continue to cause 
flooding of small streams and creeks, streets, country roads, poor 
drainage areas and other low lying spots. Consequently, a flood 
warning remains in effect. Please heed all road closures.
