...SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL EXPECTED FRIDAY...

.A warm front will approach New England from the southwest today
and will stall over southern New England tonight. As it moves 
northeast...snow will overspread New Hampshire and then western 
Maine from southwest to northeast during the morning hours today.
Snowfall should concentrate in a band generally south of the 
notches and north of the Manchester/Nashua corridor...into 
adjacent southwestern Maine. The heaviest snow should fall midday 
into the early evening before tapering off from the southwest. 
Precipitation may end as a brief period of sleet or freezing 
drizzle after midnight over southernmost New Hampshire and extreme
southwestern Maine.

Another separate system will bring widespread mixed precipitation
to the region on Saturday. Very cold surface temperatures
combined with warmer air aloft may lead to large area of freezing
rain during the day Saturday. Hazardous travel conditions are
expected again with this system.

...SNOW CONTINUES THROUGH THIS EVENING...

...SIGNIFICANT MIXED PRECIPITATION EXPECTED SATURDAY...

.A band of moderate to heavy snowfall will continue to drift
through New Hampshire and western Maine late this afternoon and
into the evening hours. The heaviest snow will fall in an area
bounded by the Lakes Region to the White Mountains in New
Hampshire...and over southwestern and coastal western Maine.
Amounts in that band will generally be 4 to 8 inches...with
lighter amounts to the north and south. Snow will taper off this
evening...and may end as a period of freezing drizzle.

Another separate area of precipitation will approach the area from
the southwest early Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to
remain below freezing...but temperatures aloft will continue to
warm. A large area of freezing rain is expected generally south of
the mountains. Near the immediate coast precipitation may change
to rain very late in the day Saturday. In the mountains
precipitation may remain a sleet and snow mixture. A swath of ice
accumulation around a quarter inch is expected across much of
southern New Hampshire and into western Maine. Hazardous travel
conditions are expected and winter weather advisories have been 
issued for this precipitation.

...SIGNIFICANT MIXED PRECIPITATION EXPECTED SATURDAY...

.A band of moderate snowfall continues across central New 
Hampshire and most of western Maine. The heaviest snow will fall 
in and just south of the White Mountains in New Hampshire...and 
over southwestern and coastal western Maine. Amounts in that band 
will generally be 4 to 8 inches...with lighter amounts to the 
north and south. Snow will taper off this evening...and may end as
a period of freezing drizzle.

Another separate area of precipitation will approach the area
from the southwest early Saturday morning. Temperatures are
expected to remain below freezing...but temperatures aloft will
continue to warm. A large area of freezing rain is expected
generally south of the mountains. Near the immediate coast
precipitation may change to rain very late in the day Saturday.
In the mountains precipitation may remain a sleet and snow
mixture. A swath of ice accumulation around a quarter inch is
expected across much of southern New Hampshire and into western
Maine. Hazardous travel conditions are expected and winter

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves across the area tonight with a warm front
approaching from the southwest tomorrow. This warm front will
spread snow into the area on Friday, with several inches
accumulating in most areas. The warm front will settle over
southern New England and the Gulf of Maine, with low pressure
tracking east along the front on Saturday. This will spread
more precipitation, likely in the form of freezing rain into
much of New Hampshire and Maine. A cold front will sweep in from
the northwest Saturday night. Another low pressure system will
move near Cape Cod on Christmas Day, potentially bringing more
snowfall to the area.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
Update...Minor changes to account for latest observational
trends.

Previous discussion...High pressure will continue to build over
the region tonight. This will allow for cold and dry air to
continue to build southwards into the region.

Forecast below most available model guidance for tonight as the
Canadian high continues to build over the region. There will be
some high, thin clouds entering the region this evening,
followed by a lowering and thickening of the cloud base
overnight.

Overnight lows are expected to be below zero over the northern
mountains tonight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Update...Have upgraded portions of the winter storm watch to
warnings...as well as some of the previous advisory. Allowed far
Srn NH to go to an advisory as there may be some saturation
issues especially later in the event Fri. 22.00z early guidance
has more or less held serve regarding timing and location of
best snowfall.

Honestly this is the easier forecast of the two storm
systems given that it will just be one ptype until very late and
after most of the QPF has fallen. The difficult part is that
snowfall amounts look to be in that 4 to 7 inch range...either
side of warning criteria. GFS and ECMWF are in good agreement
that strongest frontogenesis will slice thru the center of the
forecast area Fri...with a good signal for an enhanced band of
snowfall S of the mtns in the vicinity of the Lakes Region into
far SWrn ME. CMC-NHem and NAM forcing looks to be farther
N...but displaced from QPF fields. Based on regional radar
mosaic...the GFS/ECMWF combo appears to be handling banded
precip better. I will be taking a look at early 00z guidance
before any headline decisions are made.

Previous discussion...Low pressure will move northeast through
the Ohio River Valley on Friday. Snow will spread from southwest
to northeast during the mid to late morning hours. Strong warm
air advection aloft will allow for the snow to pick up in
intensity late Friday into Friday evening.

Earlier in the week, thermal profiles suggested a changeover to
mixed precipitation over southern areas Friday evening. However,
a weak wave of low pressure will form along the southern New
England coastline before entering the Gulf of Maine Friday
evening. This will allow for winds to remain out of the
northeast, with a cool drainage flow. Followed the cooler end of
available guidance.

Sufficient warming aloft will likely allow for a period of sleet
or freezing rain later Friday night before the precipitation
ends. There will likely be a brief break before our next weather
system.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The first batch of snow will likely be ending in the north as
the next batch of precipitation arrives from the south on
Saturday. The primary area of low pressure passes to the north,
near the Saint Lawrence Valley, while secondary surface low
pressure develops along the coastal front, the boundary between
cold air dammed in over eastern New England and warmer maritime
air. The end result will be a highly inverted low level thermal
profile which will favor precipitation falling as freezing rain.
Total precipitation amounts during this period vary considerably
among the forecast models, with the GFS producing nearly an inch
of QPF while the ECMWF only about 0.5 and the NAM and CMC only
0.2 or so. While there is variability in the amount of water
falling from the sky, models are consistent in the forecast low
level temperature profile favoring freezing rain. This is rather
surprising given how poorly models typically handle cold air
damming, but it lends confidence to the forecast precipitation
type. Impacts from this freezing rain will likely be less than
normal considering the coat of snow it will be falling on top
of, but it could still accumulate to 0.1 to as much as 0.5 inch
in the hardest hit areas. Temperatures will likely warm through
the day as the rain freezes and releases heat, but expect
temperatures to hold steady right around the freezing mark until
precipitation ends. The only exception may be around the
immediate coastline especially near Rockland where the coastal
front may be able to reach the shoreline. Further north, areas
such as Jackman may stay all snow on Saturday, though there is
still a chance that freezing rain could make its way up there.

Synoptic scale cold front moves through Saturday night, likely
causing temperatures to warm to near or above freezing for a few
hours on the northwest wind before the colder air begins moving
in. High temperatures on Sunday will likely be in the morning as
cold air filters in through the day.

Models still are favoring the idea of developing low pressure
along the offshore front on Christmas Day, with snow on the
north side of this likely spreading northward into New Hampshire
and Maine. Trends here indicate a further offshore development
of this system, which would increase confidence that
precipitation type will be all snow, but raises the possibility
that QPF will be light on the northern edge. At this point would
like to continue the high PoP for snow this time period, but
perhaps set expectations on amounts a little lighter than
previous storms. One can't help but notice the overall trend in
the storm track moving further and further southeast with each
passing wave.

Core of very cold air in Canada may dip down into northern parts
of our area during the middle of next week. Temperatures within
this region will likely be subzero, but there is still
uncertainty as to whether this will be a full cold punch into
our area or just a side swipe. The most likely areas to feel the
full impact will be in the north and east where subzero
temperatures are currently forecast Tuesday through Thursday,
perhaps longer.

.AVIATION /04Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Short Term...VFR conditions deteriorating to IFR and locally
LIFR by midday Friday. Some ice in the form of freezing rain
and/or sleet is possible at CON, MHT and perhaps PWM by late
Friday night.

Long Term...Should see IFR conditions continuing Saturday with
freezing rain arriving from southwest to northeast.
Precipitation ends during the evening and then a cold front
comes through. This should bring VFR conditions back to the
area for Sunday. Another storm may bring accumulating snowfall
and IFR or worse conditions on Monday.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Winds will gradually increase late Friday and
Friday night, but may remain below SCA levels.

Long Term...Low pressure tracks northeast through the Gulf of
Maine on Saturday, with a cold front pushing in behind it. Winds
behind the front are not all that strong with high pressure
building in fairly quickly on Sunday, likely peaking at about 20
