We cont to closely monitor the fog situation. As is typical...
vsbys are worst just W of the bank of low stratus that has
enveloped much of the fcst area from Hwy 281 E.

A fcst update has been published to temper warm-up E of Hwy 281
where low clouds will retard the warm-up. We may not have been
aggressive enough. Stratus always lingers longer than expected.
The HRRR and HRRRX has it exiting to the E over the next 4 hrs.
I am skeptical espcly because it does not appear to be fully
reflecting obs right now (i.e., it's not far enough W).

UPDATE Issued at 646 AM CST Sun Mar 5 2017

Some areas of patchy fog have developed across central and south
central Nebraska this morning. Have included patchy fog in the
forecast. Some sites have dropped to a 1/4 mile, but do not expect
this to be widespread. Expect conditions to improve over the next
2-3 hours.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 348 AM CST Sun Mar 5 2017

There is a lot going on in this forecast, but the main two
concerns are winds and and dewpoint's. Not far behind is high
temperatures. Currently dewpoints and temperatures are warmer than
previously expected. The RAP has a fairly good handle on current
conditions with respect to temps/dewpoints and so followed the
RAP, especially for dewpoint's throughout much of the day with
only slight tweaks during the afternoon. Didn't quite go as high
with the temps as the RAP, but just a couple degrees off.

Overall in the bigger picture, the dryline is tightening it's
gradient and moving eastward into the area before it retreats late
this afternoon/evening back to the west. To the east very warm
moist air is advecting northward keeping dewpoints fairly high.
Stratus has advected northward overnight and expect it to persist
through at least a portion of the morning before moving eastward
today. While clouds could inhibit temps some this morning in the
east, still expect maximum insolation and gusty winds to mix down
and temps in the mid and upper 70s are expected areawide. The
highest temps are expected behind the dryline in north central
Kansas with extremely low RH values. Currently just shy of record
temperatures in the forecast for Hastings and Grand Island, but
not far, so they are in jeopardy. See the climate section for
details.

The strongest winds will be across eastern sections of the area
east of the dryline with winds becoming more southwesterly behind
the dryline. After Saturday's winds were not forecasted quite high
enough, thing again winds today may not be high enough, but have
tried to push them at least a knot or two higher than MOS guidance
from now through the day to account for the lower bias.

The combination of the strong winds and low relative humidities
will cause extreme fire danger across a portion of south central
Nebraska and north central Kansas where a Fire weather Warning has
been issued. Please see the Fire weather Section for more
details.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 348 AM CST Sun Mar 5 2017

Primary forecast concern and main focus was on Monday and Tuesday
fire weather issues.

At 12Z Monday, models are in good agreement showing sharper
southwesterly flow in place in the upper levels, with the main
trough axis starting to move onto the High Plains. This trough
axis looks to make its push through the area later in the day
Monday/Monday evening, with a closed low developing near the
US/Can border. This trough continues to affect the area into
Tuesday morning, but eventually more northwesterly flow develops.
The forecast continues to be dry, though precipitation chances
aren't far outside of the CWA, to the north (closer to the better
lift) as well as to the east (sfc frontal boundary). The
accompanying surface cold front timing hasn't changed notably the
past few days, ushering in west-northwesterly winds for the
midday/afternoon hours on Monday. A tightened pressure gradient
(thanks to the sfc low over the Dakotas), increased mixing and
strong winds aloft is expected to result in sustained wind speeds
over 30 MPH for the entire CWA, as well as gusts over 40 MPH.
There is some concern about reaching High Wind criteria (sustained
40+ MPH), mainly across western areas, but not all models/
guidance agree, so at this point opted out of any watch. Along
with the winds, this front is ushering in a notably drier airmass,
with forecast dewpoints falling from the 30s/40s in the morning
to the single digits/teens in the afternoon. Models have been
pretty consistent for the past few days showing this, and
resultant relative humidity values are forecast to fall below 20%
CWA-wide. Because of these RH values and the strong winds
expected, collaborated with neighbors to go ahead an upgrade the
Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for Monday aftn/early
evening.

Fire weather concerns will again be in place for Tuesday. Behind
the front, cooler air builds into the region, and forecast highs
for Tuesday are "only" in the 50s (this is still above normal!).
But because forecast dewpoints remain in the single digits/lower
teens, RH values are expected to drop below 20%. It will again be
windy, but currently not quite like Monday. This is 5 periods out,
so still some time to tweak forecast elements before addressing
headlines.

On Wednesday, expecting to have lower amplitude upper level
northwesterly flow across the region in the wake of Mon/Tue's
trough passage. The forecast remains dry. At the surface, winds
are expected to have diminished by morning, with more south-
southwesterly flow in place on the backside of an area of high
pressure over the Gulf Coast region. Wind speeds are not forecast
to be anywhere as strong as Mon/Tues, currently forecast around 15
MPH, though a few higher gusts may be possible (depends on the
model). Expecting a rebound in temperatures, with highs reaching
the mid 60s for most locations. Still a drier airmass in place,
and RH values during the afternoon are once again forecast to fall
to near/below 20%, but at this point the winds look to keep
critical fire conditions in check.

The forecast for Thursday through the daytime Friday remains dry.
Models showing continued low amplitude northwesterly to zonal
upper level flow across the region, but the potential for
disturbances to affect the area increases later in the day Friday.
At this point though, any precip chances look to remain out of
the CWA. Compared to the first few days of the work week, Thur/Fri
winds looking to be a break, with speeds currently forecast
around 10-15 MPH. High temperatures are forecast to warm back up
into the mid 60s to lower 70s.

Friday night and into the week, overall confidence isn't the
highest, as precipitation chances re-enter the forecast. Models
showing the potential for a couple of disturbances to pass through
the region in that zonal upper level flow, but there are some
timing/location differences between models. Made no changes to the
model blend. Highs through the weekend look to fall back into the
50s, still above normal for this time of year.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Today:
Fire weather continues to be a concern today with extreme/
critical fire danger across portions of north central Kansas and
south central nebraska. Similar to the last couple of days, the
lowest RH values and the highest wind values are in different
locations, but they do overlap south and west of a line from
Johnson Lake to Minden, NE to Franklin, NE to Beloit, KS. Some of
the eastern most counties in the warning are more marginal with
higher dewpoints/RH values possible, but winds will be the
strongest in those areas and decided to hedge the RH values with
the stronger winds. Outside of the extreme/critical fire danger,
very high/near critical fire danger is expected generally along
and east of Hwy 281 in Nebraska and Kansas.

Monday - Tuesday:
Dangerous fire weather conditions are forecast for Monday, and a
Red Flag Warning has been issued for the afternoon/early evening
hours across the entire CWA. A cold front pushing through the
region will usher in strong west-northwest winds and notably drier
air mass. Sustained speeds over 30 MPH and gusts near 45 MPH
(possibly higher?) are expected. There is some concern, mainly
across the west, that sustained speeds may be closer to 40 MPH,
but not all guidance is in agreement showing that. Dewpoints in
the morning are expected to be in the 30s/40s, but behind the
front through the afternoon, they are forecast to fall into the
single digits/teens. The resulting RH values are expected to drop
below 20% across the entire CWA.

For Tuesday, critical fire weather conditions will again be
possible. While high temperatures are forecast to only top out in
the 50s (still above normal), dewpoints in the single digits to
lower teens are expected to remain in place, bringing another
round of RH values near/below 20%. Northwest winds with sustained
speeds near 25 MPH and gusts over 30 MPH will again be possible.

Critical or near-critical fire danger will occur over the entire
area this afternoon. A Red Flag Warning is in effect where
conditions will be critical...along and southwest of a line from
Johnson Lake Nebraska to Minden to Franklin to Beloit, Kansas.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

Critical fire weather conditions will occur across the entire
area Monday and Tuesday. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for
Monday afternoon and early evening for the entire outlook area.

Monday afternoon, strong west to northwest winds will occur across
the area. Speeds of 30 to 35 MPH are expected for many locations,
with gusts near 45 MPH possible.

...Patchy Dense Fog Affecting Some Areas West of Highway 281...

Areas of dense fog have developed this morning...and visibility
was reduced to one-quarter mile or less...including portions of
Interstate 80 and Highway 6. Visibilities will be variable over
the next two hours...creating hazardous driving conditions.
Drivers should be prepared for drastic changes in visibility over
short distances. Use low beam headlights and leave plenty of
distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Visibilities will begin to improve after 10 am...and the fog will
be entirely fog by noon.
