Strong winds will sporadically begin after midnight as the upper level storm begins to approach the region. Then by late morning the stronger winds will become more sustained and will reach their peak by mid afternoon. The strong winds will also create areas of blowing dust which will cause hazardous driving conditions especially on north-south running roads and locations west of Las Cruces. The winds and dust will continue into early evening until the finally diminish a little after sunset. .SYNOPSIS...
On Friday we will see a return of the winds and dust to our
forecast as we will see very strong winds starting very early in
the day on Friday and then dusty and gusty by the afternoon. We
will see cooler temperatures for Saturday and Sunday with just a
slight chance for precipitation on Saturday. The strong winds will
return on Monday, but the rest of next week will be calmer with
near normal temperatures.

.DISCUSSION...
Well forget this coming in as a lion and going out as a lamb; this
month of March will roar out like a great big windy lion.
Currently a strong upper level trough was digging its way through
Nevada and by Friday morning it will be approaching the Four
Corners region. This system will not only bring a couple of bands
of strong winds aloft but it will also help tighten up the
surfaced pressure gradient with the help of a lee side surface
trough forming near Midland (further south than usual). These
weather features will help give us strong winds starting any time
after midnight. I went ahead and issued an advisory (25 to 35
mph) for most locations and a high wind warning (35 to 45 mph)
for the Sacramento Mountains and east of the Organ and Franklin
Mountains. The products will start at midnight when we could see
some strong winds, but I don't think we will see the very
strongest sustained winds the whole time during the early morning
hours. Then by late morning the inversion will break and we will
get the stronger winds to become more sustained and reaching
their peak in the afternoon. Blowing dust and road closures will
be possible Friday afternoon. The upper level trough will drag a
cold front across the region later on Friday and once it passes
that will help knock some the dust out of the air by Friday
evening.
The upper low will be slow to drift off so it will linger through
Sunday morning. The low doesn't have much moisture to work with,
but I can't rule out a stray shower or very high mountain snow
shower. I'm not expecting much of any decent precipitation totals.
By late Sunday the low will be to our east and then on Monday a
our winds will bounce back around to the west and we will see our
afternoon high temperatures back above normal on Monday. A short
wave trough will dash across southern Colorado on Monday afternoon
and this system will give us another round of winds. Right now it
looks like we will be close to wind advisory criteria (25 to 35
mph). Then for the rest of the week we will see an upper level
ridge slowly begin to build into the Southwest U.S. which will be
the start of a pattern shift for us back to calmer and warmer
weather.

Winds will be main concern through the period. W to SW winds will
generally be 10-20KTS through night with strongest winds in NM
bootheel and eastern mountain slopes. After 12Z, expect winds to
increase from west to east to 25-35G45KTS and gradually shift from
the SW to W. After 15Z areas of BLO 1SM BLDU will affect areas south
of a KALM-KLSB line. Skies generally SKC-FEW250 through 12Z then
FEW-SCT050-070 SCT-BKN250 with isolated -SHRA mainly over Gila
region.
.FIRE WEATHER...
Another strong storm system will be moving into the region on Friday
with winds already starting to increase tonight out of the
southwest. Tomorrow, extremely critical fire weather conditions are
expected with the worst conditions over eastern half of area but
critical conditions are expected areawide. A Red Flag Warning is in
effect for all zones but relative humidities may remain above 15
percent at elevations above about 7000 feet. Behind the cold front
that will move through tomorrow, temperatures for the weekend will
drop about 10 degrees for Saturday and start to warm up on Sunday to
near normal. Another windy day likely Monday as an upper trough
moves across the Rockies, then wind concerns will start to decrease
for the remainder of the week, but relative humidities will fall
back into the single digits and lower teens.
