What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Jul 30, 4:40 AM PDT, 9 hours 30 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 30, 4:40 AM PDT, 9 hours 30 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
440 AM PDT Sun Jul 30 2017

.SYNOPSIS...Very hot and dry conditions for interior locations, as a
strong ridge of high pressure builds over the West Coast and
persists throughout the week. Highs will be around 105 to 115 for
the warmest locations. Along the coast, expect seasonal temperatures
with fog and low clouds during the overnight hours.

&&

.DISCUSSION...The big story this week will be the hot weather over the interior
locations. A strong ridge of high pressure will be building over the
West Coast. 850 mb temperatures are progged to be around 30 to 33C,
with the warmest air over Trinity County from Monday through
Wednesday. The 500 mb height will be around 595 dm during the same
time period. This means that the hottest airmass so far this season
will be settling over the interior locations. Daily high
temperatures are expected to be around 105 to 115 F, with the
warmest days taking place from Monday through Wednesday. Right now,
looks like Thursday and Friday won't be as hot as Monday through
Wednesday.

Kept the excessive heat watch as is. Stay tuned today for the
updates on the excessive heat watch.

Along with hot weather, dry conditions will be in store for the
first part of the week. Weather models are hinting on potential
precipitation and thunderstorm late this week as monsoonal moisture
creeps in from the southeast. Right now, have slight chance of
thunderstorms forecasted for eastern part of the CWA for Thursday
through Saturday. Forecast confidence is low, but has been
increasing. Overall, don't expect the weather pattern to change much
in this summery pattern. Very hot and dry inland, marine stratus
along the coast. Changes to the previous forecast package is
minor.

&&

.MARINE...The pressure gradient between the inland thermal trough
and the E Pacific high pressure will continue to produce gale force
gusts over the N outer waters through Monday. Have extended the
Small Craft Advisory a bit for the N inner and S outer waters. S
winds are expected across the S inner waters today and tonight due a
pronounced eddy S of Cape Mendocino.

Models continue to indicate long period S swell building into the
area. The first train arrived yesterday and continues with periods
near 12 seconds. The second train will arrive by tonight with
periods of around 18 seconds. Both swell trains will mainly affect
the outer waters with some swell entering the S inner waters from
time to time.

Winds and seas are expected to decrease by the middle of the coming
week as the inverted trough over land shifts offshore. Winds will
become light and eventually S. /SEC

&&

.AVIATION...Little in the way of coastal cloudiness is to be found N
of Cape Mendocino this morning. However, KCEC has reported
occasional ceilings around 600 ft. GOES-16 nighttime microphysics
imagery does appear to show low-level moisture over much of the
coastal waters and inland up the adjacent waterways. The latest data
from the ACV profiler indicates a shrinking marine layer over the
past 12 hours or so and a strengthening low-level inversion.

A bank of low clouds is apparent along the Mendocino County coast N
to near Shelter Cove, and it is advecting N at a pretty good clip.
The high resolution models are indicating that the clouds may hang
up near the Cape as they encounter the stronger N winds there.
However, N winds hugging the Redwood Coast will be lighter, and
clouds may sneak around the Cape later today. These clouds will be
working against the low-level subsidence and diurnal heating over
land, so not expecting any ceilings if they do make it to the
terminals.

Winds will generally be light, but some gusts near 20 kt are
possible at KCEC during the afternoon. /SEC
