Some fog has formed at the head of Lake Superior and have added a
mention. Made an adjustment to the pops Monday morning to reflect
latest short term hires models which hold off on greater coverage
of rain until at least mid morning. Rest of the forecast on
track.

UPDATE Issued at 639 PM CST Sun Mar 5 2017

Plenty of cloud cover over the forecast area this evening. Low
level moisture has been on the increase through the day as surface
dewpoints have reached the lower 40s around the Brainerd Lakes,
30s elsewhere. Weak area of upper level ridging over the region
and a lack of forcing has kept drizzle from forming. Not expecting
any drizzle or showers developing until after midnight when better
forcing arrives. Have adjust accordingly and made some other
minor adjustments.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 341 PM CST Sun Mar 5 2017

An active pattern will set up over the Northland tonight, and
especially Monday. For tonight, a moist boundary layer is expected
to develop later this evening, with an unseasonably warm air mass
situated overhead. Model soundings are indicating a shallow, but
slowly deepening, moist layer near the sfc, so drizzle is possible,
but shouldn't develop into freezing drizzle due to temperatures
expected to stay above freezing overnight. Due to the moist air in
place, some areas of fog are possible tonight, especially over
northwest Wisconsin and adjoining areas of Minnesota and along the
North Shore. Some uncertainty does exist with the fog due to the
potential of gusty winds overnight, enhancing boundary layer mixing.
However, dew point depressions look favorable for some fog
development. No dense fog is expected, but could drop as low as one-
half of a mile in some spots.

A mid- to upper-level system is expected to advance over the
Northland after dawn Monday morning. Moisture transport should be
enhanced, thanks to an influx of Gulf moisture due to southerly flow
as indicated by sfc streamlines and strong southerly 850 mb level
winds of 50+ kts. One thing to be aware of is the marginal potential
for severe weather over portions of the Northland Monday. The Storm
Prediction Center has a Marginal Risk south of a line from Pine
Center to Duluth to Winter. While instability looks to be a limiting
factor, with MUCAPE values generally up to a few hundred J/kg,
synoptic guidance has 0-6 km bulk shear values generally between 40
and 50 knots across the area, with some higher values possible
across the Marginal Risk area. Damaging winds appear to be the most
likely hazard, with perhaps some isolated large hail, if any severe
thunderstorms do develop.

POPs will steadily increase through the morning hours, and reach
their highest values Monday afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts
with this system have steadily increased for the past few days, with
current forecast values through Tuesday morning ranging from one-
tenth in our southwestern counties, up to one-half inch across our
eastern forecast area, and the highest amounts likely along the
North Shore. Temperatures Monday will still be well above seasonal
normals, with highs Monday expected to be in the 50s for most places.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

By Monday evening, the surface low will be in far southern
Manitoba and almost straddling the International Border while the
cold front will be entering western Minnesota. This front will
provide the necessary lift to produce thunderstorms as it moves
east across the Gopher state and into Wisconsin about midnight.
With very strong frontal forcing and extreme warm air advection,
expect numerous showers. Thunderstorms will be possible too with
some pretty good instability for early March with this robust
system. MUCAPEs forecast to be in the 500 to 600 j/kg range.
Intense winds with this low will create strong wind shear with the
Bulk Richardson shear 60 to 70 kts, but with little turning, the
chances of rotating storms are low. Winds will be very strong
behind the front with low level winds up to 45 kts easily
transported to the surface. Will need to monitor for possible wind
advisory.

The cold front will be east of the Northland by midnight Tuesday.
Cold air filtering into the region behind the low will change any
precipitation to snow from west to east. By 12Z Tuesday, 8h temps
will range from -9C to -14C and the cold air will continue to
seep into the region through Wednesday when the coldest air of
-17C to -23C for the period will be over the forecast area. But
after that cold shot, we are looking at a more mild Pacific flow
pattern with embedded shortwaves that may produce a few showers.

The frontal boundary that was near BRD earlier this evening, has
dropped southward and is now near the Twin Cities. Plenty of low
level moisture continues to stream over all terminals except INL.
Will see a mix of MVFR/VFR cigs through much of the forecast until
the cold front reaches the BRD/INL area after 00Z. Models are
having a difficult time resolving the onset of showers and
thunderstorms. Went with the short term hires models for
placement in TAFs. VFR is expected in the vicinity of the storms.
Gusty winds are forecast by mid morning at all terminals and will
last through the forecast.

There is a chance for thunderstorms Monday across much of the
Northland, with the best chance Monday afternoon across east-
central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin Monday evening. There
is a Marginal Risk of severe weather over portions of northeast
Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin south of a Pine Center, MN to
Duluth, MN to Winter, WI line.

Rain is expected to change to snow across north-central and
northeast Minnesota Monday night into Tuesday morning, and areas
north of the Highway 2 corridor will see up to a couple of inches
of new snow during this time period.

West to northwest winds will be gusty Tuesday and Wednesday
across north-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, with gusts
up to 35 mph Tuesday, and up to 30 mph Wednesday.
