.SYNOPSIS...
A series of troughs will swing east across the Great Lakes
tonight through Wednesday. High pressure will build across the
region Wednesday night through Thursday. Low pressure will move
into the Great Lakes region Thursday night into Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Have raised additional snowfall totals quite a bit through
tomorrow across portions of the primary snowbelt. Additional
snowfall of 1 to 2 feet looks likely through Wednesday across
Erie County and perhaps northeast Ashtabula County. Will take a
closer look at how far south the band will move Tuesday into
Wednesday.

Wind chills are generally around -5 degrees most places and we
should remain above Wind Chill Advisory criteria. However, we
may be close to Wind Chill Advisory criteria for Tuesday night.
Will take a closer look at that with the next forecast package.

Original NEAR TERM Discussion...
Fairly prolonged lake effect snow will continue through Tuesday
night. The bands have been rather disorganized this afternoon
and mainly offshore, but will push back south into the warning
area this evening as a trough swings southward across the lake.
Expecting snow bands to be very intense overnight, with a fairly
organized dominant band developing late in the overnight. A
very good thermodynamic and synoptic environment will be in
place overnight, with decent synoptic moisture and an upstream
connection to Lake Michigan snow bands, long fetch over the
lake, lake induced EL's to 10kft, lake induced CAPE to 600 j/kg,
little shear and ~35 kts of mean flow through the cloud layer.
Snow growth is fairly optimal, with the best lift centered
through the DGZ. The complication with the forecast is where
exactly the band sets up. 1 to 2 inch per hour rates are
certainly possible, but the heaviest/overall forecast snowfall
amounts are uncertain and dependent on the location of the band.

As far as headlines go, have decided to upgrade Crawford PA,
Lake and Geauga to a warning. Hi-res guidance is starting to
converge on a solution where a single, dominant band sets up
onshore in Lake county, through northern Geauga, Ashtabula into
NW Crawford PA. The band will sink south and settle in on this
position sometime overnight and is expected to remain fairly
stationary. A few other secondary bands are expected to impact
areas further north during this time frame.

The biggest uncertainty with the band is how far south it will
sink Tuesday morning before returning north in the afternoon as
the synoptic flow steers the band northward for a few hours
in the afternoon. Hi-res guidance shows the band sinking south
into the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, however this is fairly
uncertain at this point. The models have tended to have a
southward bias to these lake effect bands in westerly flow,
however several of the models and model runs bring the band even
through downtown Cleveland and the central part of the county.
Have decided to issue a winter weather advisory to cover the
uncertainty of the band. Mean snowfall amounts should remain in
the 2 to 5 inch range, with the highest amounts near Euclid,
however if the band pushes south faster, sets up further south,
or remains south through the bulk of the day, amounts could be
higher and the axis of heaviest snow could be centered further
south. It also possible the band stays north of the county for
the bulk of the day as well, with little to no snow possible.
Hopefully further model runs this evening will lend to greater
confidence in the ultimate solution.

The background flow becomes more west northwest Tuesday night
with continued lake effect. A few weaker bands are expected in
this regime, and overall the environment becomes a little less
favorable for intense, heavy snowfall and dendritic growth
becomes more marginal.

The coldest temperatures of the season so far are expected
Tuesday and Tuesday night. Wind chill values will quickly drop
below zero tonight and again Tuesday night. Lows Tuesday night
are expected to be near or just below zero across the western
half of the forecast area where mostly clear skies are expected.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A rather cold pattern continues through this period as the deep
very cold upper trough remains in place over the eastern part
of the continent. There is good agreement in the models as a
rather strong arctic high will gradually build over the region
Wednesday and Thursday. Lake effect snows will diminish through
the day Wednesday as the low level inversion lowers and forcing
for upward motion subsides. Highs on Wednesday will be from
10-15 with lows Wednesday night in the single digits.

The next short wave will pivot around the base of the long wave
trough Thursday night and Friday. The GFS is more pronounced with
the wave than the ECMWF. So we will replace lake effect snow for
light synoptic snows. Temperatures will warm slightly but still
remain well below normal. Highs on Friday will be in the lower to
mid 20s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Most of the models show the next clipper crossing the eastern Great
Lakes Friday night but with varying locations and strengths. Not
sure how much synoptic snow might occur and will have a chance
everywhere Friday night, then generally restrict the snow to the
snowbelt through the weekend.

A bitter cold air air mass would seem to be in the offing for the
last weekend of the year. The forecast will not be as cold as it
could be, mainly due to any uncertainty on the timing. These cold
air masses tend to come in quickly and leave quickly as the wind
shifts. The ECMWF shows another reinforcing front by Sunday night
and winds will likely back to the southwest and the coldest of air
could slide east, but other models are not in agreement with the
next system. The GFS brings a closed low across the Great Lakes and
seems a little over done, so we will wait and watch the model
trends. In any case, the lake effect snow could be reinvigorated by
Monday and will continue with higher pops in the snowbelt. Any
moderation of temperature seems as though it would be short lived
and we should start the new year very cold.

.AVIATION /06Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/...
LIFR conditions will continue at KERI through tonight and likely
much of tomorrow. The band could push inland far enough to give
a brief break to KERI at times late tonight into the early
afternoon, but it is uncertain how far inland the band will
move. Some snow could start to affect KCLE late Tuesday night
into Wednesday. VFR expected elsewhere.

.MARINE...
Westerly gales are occurring over the central and eastern portion of
Lake Erie as arctic air overspreads the region and allows low and
mid level winds to mix to the lake surface. We expect the pressure
gradient to relax overnight and allow the winds to decrease below
gale threshold. Small craft Advisories will be needed afterwards
through Tuesday night.

High pressure will expand across the Great Lakes region Wednesday
into Friday with winds becoming light, bringing a window of tranquil
conditions.

There are now indications that this frigid period will
begin to freeze the shallow western basin of Lake Erie on Thursday.
This is indicated from the Great Lakes Wave model showing zero wave
heights spreading slowly east from the shallowest western edge of
Lake Erie. The entire western basin may freeze over in a day or so
and affect the lake effect fetch length and wave generation.

Winds will increase on Saturday as a storm develops off the east
coast and could approach gale conditions.

...An intense snow squall will affect northeastern Lake...northern
Ashtabula and central Erie Counties Until at least 130 AM EST...

At 1026 PM EST, radar indicated an intense snow squall along the
Erie Lakeshore, from Erie Pennsylvania southwest across the Ashtabula
county lakeshore.

HAZARDS INCLUDE... Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches an hour
combined with Winds to 30 mph will drop the visibility to near
white out conditions at times..

Locations impacted include...
Along the I-90 corridor from near Painesville Ohio to Erie
Pennsylvania.   Other locations include Ashtabula, Conneaut,
Fairport Harbor, Geneva-On-The-Lake, Mentor, Geneva, North East,
Madison, Girard, North Kingsville, Perry, Northwest Harborcreek,
Harborcreek, Mentor-On-The-Lake, Lawrence Park, Wesleyville, Lake
City and Kingsville.

Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this snow
squall. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads are
likely to lead to accidents. Consider delaying travel until the
