.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic air and bitter cold temperatures will remain in place across
the region for the foreseeable future. In fact, the coldest air yet
will arrive in time for New Year's Eve with bitter cold wind chills
expect. Steadier lake effect snows will return this evening with
periods of locally heavy lake snows through Saturday evening. These
will be driven by subtle features with periods of dry weather
outside of the lake effect snow bands.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
This afternoon, GOES East 1-minute imagery shows a mesolow moving
across the Niagara Peninsula to near Toronto, while a plume of lake
effect snow is developing behind the low on Lake Erie. Along the
leading edge of the meso low, the lake effect plume will push
quickly across the Niagara Frontier and Buffalo metro late this
afternoon with snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour brining a quick
1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation. Meanwhile, Lake Ontario
continues to tea kettle, and is actually being directed into Toronto
ahead of the mesolow. On the east end of the lake, the plume is
hugging the shoreline in Wayne brining some light lake effect snow
accumulations of an inch or two through the afternoon. As the meso
continues to track east over Lake Ontario, this band will be pulled
northward over the center of the lake.
Off Lake Erie...
Behind the mesolow passage this evening, light southwesterly winds
will position the lake effect snow band along the Lake Erie
shoreline impacting locations from Dunkirk to Silver Creek to
Hamburg. Capping inversion heights to 7500 feet overnight with
increasing synoptic moisture and ascent ahead of an approaching
shortwave will bring significant accumulating lake effect snows. The
band will be further enhanced Saturday morning as the shortwave
moves across the region, spreading some light synoptic snow
accumulations of an inch or less outside of the lake effect band.
Overall steering layer winds will remain fairly light through
Saturday morning, 10-20 knots, which will keep the heaviest snow
accumulations more along the Lake Erie shoreline that we have
typically seen so far this winter, which will be more impactful to
the I-90 corridor. As we get into Saturday afternoon, behind the
shortwave passage, westerly winds will increase, and the capping
inversion height will rise to 10-15kft. This will push the lake
effect snows inland across the western Southern Tier, brining the
heavier snowfall to the more classic Chautauqua ridge locations from
Mayville to Perrysburg to the Boston Hills and southwestern Wyoming
county. By Saturday night an arctic boundary will push south across
the lake, bringing steadily drying air and lowering capping
inversion heights as high pressure starts to build into the region.
Lake effect snows will slowly diminish into Sunday morning. 10 to 20
inches of snow is expected along the Lake Erie shoreline, the
Chautauqua ridge and the Boston Hills by the time the lake effect
winds down late Saturday night.
Off Lake Ontario...
A mesolow will remain in place over Lake Ontario tonight through
Saturday morning. The light flow will keep the convergence band over
the open waters of the lake, and thus expect little to no impact for
areas off Lake Ontario through early Saturday morning. As a
shortwave crosses the region Saturday morning, increasing westerly
flow and cold advection behind the wave with the mesolow being
kicked eastward will initially push the lake effect snow eastward
into Jefferson and Oswego Counties. A secondary arctic boundary will
then push south across the lake late Saturday and Saturday night.
The flow will back around to the northwest, with significantly
enhanced convergence along the south shore of Lake Ontario. The
enhanced convergence with the arctic boundary and capping inversion
heights rising to 10-15kft will produce moderate to heavy lake
effect snow for the southern shoreline of Lake Ontario. With the
northwesterly flow direction, expect the great enhancement to occur
along the lake shore curvature near Irondequoit Bay helping to direct
the heaviest lake effect snow north and east of Rochester along the
highway 104 corridor in Monroe and Wayne Counties. Have accordingly
increased forecast snowfall amounts for these locations, and
upgraded these zones to a Lake Effect Snow Warning from Saturday
afternoon trough Sunday morning.
Outside of the lake effect areas, the cold temperatures will remain
the main talking point, with some light synoptic snow accumulations
of 1/2 to 2 inches possible as the shortwave moves across the region
Saturday morning. Lows tonight will range from the + single digits
for WNY and the Northern Finger Lakes, to the - single digits for
the North Country. For Saturday highs will be in the teens. Even
colder air will filter in behind an arctic frontal boundary Saturday
night, bring lows back to near zero in the west and 20 below or
possibly colder in the North Country. Wind chill headlines will
likely be needed for Saturday night into Sunday, and will continue
to mention in the HWO for now.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The backside of an upper level trough will be moving across the
eastern Great Lakes Sunday. A large region of high pressure will be
moving into the Northern Plains and will be driving another shot of
arctic air into the region. This airmass will be very cold with very
low wind chills for Western NY and the North Country. Temperatures
will only reach around zero to the single digits across Western NY
and below zero single digits for the North Country on Sunday.
Temperatures will drop further for New Years Eve night with
temperatures below zero with the exception of the areas right on the
lake shores. Temperatures will be 10 to 20 below in the Tug Hill
Plateau region. This will cause dangerous conditions to be outside
on New Years Eve. Hypothermia will occur quickly for those who are
not prepared for these temperatures. Sunday night temperatures will
plunge to possible record levels. These records for Monday morning
are: Buffalo 0F/1970, Rochester -8F/1970, Watertown -27F/1999. Wind
Chill headlines will likely be needed.
Northwest flow will continue across the lakes and lake effect snow
showers are expected however a lack of upstream moisture and low
inversion heights will limit heavy snow. An additional 1-2 inches is
expected along the Lake Plains of Lake Ontario with slightly higher
amounts possible from Monroe to Oswego counties Sunday. Snow showers
will taper off Sunday night.
It won't be long before the next shortwave trough dives down from
Ontario Providence Monday. A area of weak low pressure will move
across the northern Great Lakes before crossing the eastern Great
Lakes by Monday night. Lake effect bands will re-intensify Monday
afternoon with snow showers mainly south and east of the lakes.
Accumulating snow is expected Monday into Monday night with higher
amounts southeast of the lakes.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Looking ahead into the long term period for the start of 2018,
beginning New Years Day Monday, a predominately lake effect snow
regime will prevail with continued well below normal temperatures as
high-amplitude longwave troughing remains firmly entrenched across
the eastern CONUS. Most of the lake effect activity will be focused
on the Monday into Tuesday period, before temporarily shutting down
late Tuesday into Wednesday, as slightly milder and drier air
moves into the region, out ahead of another arctic front.
Long range guidance begins to diverge heading into the midweek
period as a surge of northern stream energy dives southeastward from
Canada. This feature looks to promote at least a chance of snow
showers across the region Wednesday night into Thursday, although
there continues to be timing differences handling the evolution of
this northern stream energy, with some long range guidance hinting
at phasing with the southern stream east of the region for a
possible late week Nor'easter across the eastern seaboard. Low level
wind trajectories will gradually become more northerly towards the
end of the work week, favoring possible lake effect snows south or
southeast of the lakes.

.AVIATION /20Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Significant lake effect will arrive this afternoon and evening when
a band of lake effect snow will move onshore from KBUF and KIAG
right down the lakeshore to KERI. This will produce a brief burst of
low IFR conditions before lake effect snow focuses mainly across the
western Southern Tier (including JHW) late afternoon and through
this evening. After this, a shortwave will approach late tonight
with some widespread but light snow and IFR conditions possible late
tonight at BUF/IAG.
Outlook...
Saturday...VFR most of the time with spotty IFR in scattered snow
showers, except low IFR in lake effect snow east of the lakes.
Saturday night...Areas of IFR with lake effect snow south of the
lakes.
Sunday...Mainly VFR except spotty IFR in lake effect snow showers
southeast of the lakes.
Monday and Tuesday...VFR most of the time, with scattered snow
showers producing local/brief IFR.

A meso-low will move from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario this evening,
with a brief uptick in westerly winds behind this system late
afternoon and early evening. For now, expect conditions to remain
just below small craft criteria, however it will be close. Then a
stronger low will cross the area Saturday which will likely require
small craft headlines for Lake Erie and possibly portions of Lake
Ontario.

located along a line extending from near Webster to near Chimney
Bluffs State Park. This band will continue to graze the Lake Ontario
shoreline through early afternoon, bringing poor visibilities and
slippery travel conditions to communities along and north of highway
104. Expect these poor conditions to expand eastward toward Fair
Haven over the next hour or two.
Locations impacted include...
Oswego, Fair Haven Beach State Park, Ontario, Williamson, Sodus,
Chimney Bluffs State Park, Sterling, Ira, Huron and Wolcott.
Visibilities will drop quickly to less than a quarter of a mile in
