midnight MDT Tuesday night. 

* TIMING...Snow will start Monday night and increase in intensity
  by Tuesday morning and continue through Tuesday evening. 

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...5 to 10 inches by midnight Tuesday with 
the highest amounts over southern Douglas county and the Palmer 
Divide.

* WIND/VISIBILITY...Moderate to heavy snow Tuesday morning will
  combine with winds in the afternoon with gusts to 25 mph
  reducing visibilities to under one mile at times.

A line of showers and an embedded thunderstorm that pushed east
across the plains earlier has begun to leave enough moisture for
areas of low clouds and fog. These clouds and areas of fog are
moving around and are not expected to last much past sunrise.

UPDATE Issued at 737 PM MDT Sun Apr 2 2017

Two waves will move across the state tonight. The first one is
bringing light rain to the parts of the Front Range and eastern
plains at this time. Most of the rain is evaporating before
reaching the ground. Looking at satellite imagery the second wave
is located near southwest Wyoming. It is bringing rain and
mountain snow showers to western Colorado. Expect this to shift
east across the state overnight. Increased pops a little and
expanded the mention of showers south. Precipitation amounts are
expected to be light, less than 2 inches of snow over the
mountains and less than a tenth inch of rain across the lower
elevations.

A weak shortwave trough analyzed on GOES-16 WV imagery was
located across southwest Wyoming this afternoon, and a nice
trailing plume of moisture is being drawn out of the southwest
into Colorado along the trough's warm conveyor belt. This feature
should kick off snow showers in the mountains this evening and
into the overnight hours. Snow levels will be between 8500 and
9000 feet initially, and with only weak lift provided by upslope
and dynamics, amounts should be 1-3 inches above 9000 feet. As the
trough axis crosses the mountains, the high res models have
continued to push rain showers east of the Rockies across the
Plains. A brief shower or two across the northern quarter of the
Plains is possible after 10 PM tonight through the pre-dawn hours.
Not expecting much rain accumulation out of any showers that
survive the trek east.

On Monday clouds will be on the increase throughout the afternoon
and evening ahead of the next storm system to take aim at
Colorado. A weak cold front will move south from Wyoming late
morning/midday with gusty northwest winds across northeast
Colorado. This front, combined with cold advection at 700 mb (3-5
degC drop from Sunday) and cloud cover will hold temps in the low
to mid 50s across the Plains. Mountains will also be 5-8 degF
cooler than Sunday. The next storm system doesn't look generate snow
in the mountains until late Monday evening, details in the long
term discussion below.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

Southwesterly flow aloft is over the CWA Monday night ahead of
the next approaching upper trough. The upper trough axis is over
western Colorado at 12Z Tuesday morning moving east to the eastern
Colorado border from 21Z-00Z late Tuesday afternoon. There is
increasing north-northwesterly flow aloft Tuesday night with a jet
maximum over the CWA Wednesday morning. There is weakening
northwesterly flow aloft Wednesday night with a decent upper ridge
axis over Utah by 12Z Thursday morning. The QG Omega fields show
strong upward vertical velocity over the CWA later Monday evening
into Tuesday afternoon. Downward synoptic scale energy is in place
Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon. Upslope flow dominates
the low level winds Monday night through Tuesday evening. They
become more northwesterly Tuesday overnight and Wednesday, with
normal drainage patterns Wednesday night. Moisture gets deep on
all the models by mid evening Monday. The deep moisture is in
place through Tuesday morning, then the lower levels over the
plains begin to dry out slowly. Wednesday and Wednesday night
look pretty dry with some low level moisture getting into the
mountains in the afternoon and evening. The QPF fields still show
decent amounts of precipitation with this storm but the amounts
are quite a bit lower than yesterday's 12Z runs indicated. The
highest amounts are in the mountains along and east of the divide.
Will keep the pops highs with this trough, not much to change
there. Snowfall amounts could reach warning criteria in the
mountains and southern foothills so will go with a watch in those
zones. For temperatures, Tuesday's highs are 4-8 C colder than
Monday's. Wednesday's highs are 3-5 C warmer than Tuesday's highs.
For the later days, Thursday through Sunday, upper ridging is
around into Saturday, then increasing west-southwesterly flow
aloft moves in for the weekend. There is also some moisture with
this for alpine showers Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will be
above seasonal normals all four days.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night)

Line of showers and embedded thunder that pushed east across the
airports a couple hours ago are now leaving areas of low ceilings
and fog. Latest hi res models showing some reduced visibilities
hanging around DEN and APA until around 13-14Z, though watching
the clouds on GOES-16 imagery shows a lot of movement, and
expecting westerly/drainage winds to kick in by 12z. These low
clouds and fog are not expected to last much past 12z. Ceilings
should clear after 12-14Z through the rest of the morning and
early afternoon. Clouds will increase and lower after 21Z Monday
as the next system approaches the area. Rain showers and lower
ceilings are expected after 00Z Tuesday. Light winds are expected
through 21Z Monday. A cold front will bring gusty northerly winds
after 21Z Monday, then a reinforcing push around 00Z will start
the upslope flow for showers to begin forming.

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHEAST AND NORTH CENTRAL
COLORADO.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

An upper ridge will bring warmer conditions today before a
shortwave trough passing to the north will push scattered rain and
snow showers across the high country later this afternoon then
onto the northern plains tonight. Expect up to two inches of snow
over the high mountains tonight. Showers will be diminishing after
overnight as drier air pushes in increasing westerly flow.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY

There will be a chance of snow showers in the mountains Monday
with rain showers on the plains by the afternoon. The mountains,
foothills and western half of the plains, including the Urban
Corridor, can expect snow Monday night through Tuesday into
Wednesday morning. The eastern plains will have some rain mixed in
with the snow.  Snowfall amounts are uncertain at this time,
however significant amounts could fall in the mountains above
9,000 feet. Dry weather is expected Wednesday into Saturday, then
strong westerly flow aloft will bring some moisture and a chance
of snow to the mountains for next weekend.
