Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 330 PM MST Mon Mar 6 2017 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 330 PM MST Mon Mar 6 2017 Windy, windy, windy. Gusts of 50-70 mph and very low humidities have created critical fire behavior conditions. Winds are expected to decrease later tonight as evening inversions develop, cutting off the continuing strong westerly flow aloft. Mountains ridges and along the east slopes of the foothills may continue seeing gusty winds all night. Westerly flow aloft continuing through Tuesday will bring more winds to the plains tomorrow, especially the northern tier of counties. The northern foothills will have a risk of damaging winds due to interaction with the strong flow aloft, so will issue a High Wind Warning for zone 35. Scattered snow showers continue in the mountains this afternoon and should go for a few more hours this evening before tapering off. Additional accumulations up to 4 inches will be possible. Will let the advisory continue through 6 PM this evening. Travel conditions should improve overnight as snow diminishes and we see less blowing and drifting snow. Scattered orographic snow showers are expected again Tuesday, but without significant accumulation. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday) Issued at 330 PM MST Mon Mar 6 2017 The upper level trough will transition eastward with the upper level jet moving north into Wyoming. There will be a small finger of the jet over the northern mountains helping to keep wind speeds high over the mountains and Wyoming border through Wednesday afternoon. Fire weather danger will lower Tuesday evening with decent RH recovery into Wednesday. This will help to lower fire danger some on Wednesday...however, with the winds to the north gusting from 20 to 30 mph and RH values still in the mid to upper teens fire concerns remain elevated on the plains. Temperatures will continue to be above normal with highs in the mid to upper 60s Wednesday. Thursday will see zonal flow transition into ridging over the Great Basin with increasing temperatures and dry conditions. Highs will reach into the upper 60s to lower 70s by Friday. RH values will drop into the teens but without the gusty winds red flag conditions will not be met. Caution is urged however with the dry fuels and increasing temperatures. On Saturday an upper level disturbance will drop out of the NW bringing increasing moisture down into the Northern and central mountains. A cold front will drop out of Wyoming from the NE bringing cooler temperatures and some gusty winds through the afternoon. snow for this system will stay regulated to the mountains from Friday evening through Saturday morning. Temperatures will drop into the lower 60s on the plains with 30s at higher elevations. Ridging and subsidence will arrive for Sunday before another disturbance on Monday and another round of snow for the mountains. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening) Issued at 330 PM MST Mon Mar 6 2017 Strong west winds this afternoon will ease off as the sun goes down. Mid-level clouds will also diminish overnight. Gusty west winds are expected again Tuesday, though not as strong as today. Still, west winds gusting at 30-40 knots in the afternoon may impact departure and arrival decisions. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 330 PM MST Mon Mar 6 2017 Strong winds across the plains produced critial fire weather conditions this afternoon, evidenced by the 10,000+ acre fire over Logan and Phillips Counties in the northeast corner of the state. Winds will diminish during the evening, easing the fire danger threat a little bit. For Tuesday, dry westerly flow aloft will continue over the state, with gusty winds expected across the plains again. Winds will not be as strong as today, but will still be strong enough to cause rapid fire growth problems. THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHEAST AND NORTH CENTRAL COLORADO. .DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT Strong and gusty winds and low relative humidities following the passage of a cold front early this morning will create high to extreme fire danger across northeast Colorado today. As a result, a Red Flag Warning and a High Wind Warning remain in effect today. Damaging wind gusts of 50 to 65 mph, and poor visibilities due to blowing dust will make travel hazardous on the plains for most of today. Motorists should use extreme caution while driving in crosswinds and lowered visibilities. In the high country, scattered snow showers are expected to continue through this afternoon and evening. High winds will also cause areas of blowing and drifting snow, especially on the high passes and around the Eisenhower Tunnel. Falling snow and blowing snow could reduce visibilities to less than a half mile at times. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the mountains above 9000 feet today. Snowfall should diminish in the high country later tonight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY Critical fire weather conditions will again be possible on Tuesday afternoon over much of the plains of Northeast Colorado. Gusty winds from 35 to 55 mph combined with low relative humidities will once again increase fire danger across the plains. In the high country, scattered snow showers will continue Tuesday as moist northwest flow aloft continues over the state. Additional snow accumulations up to 3 inches will be possible, mostly over the mountain passes and higher west facing slopes. However, strong and gusty west winds will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow with poor visibilities at times. The strongest winds will be during the day on Tuesday.
