Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 443 AM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday) Issued at 440 AM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 Forecast highlights in the short term period will be accumulating snow southwest, current wind chill headlines through today, and our next Arctic outbreak set to begin later today into tonight. Currently, strong northwest flow aloft with an upper level jet streak approaching the Northern Plains. Left exit region jet dynamics coupled with an approaching mid level impulse and overrunning easterly flow, north of an area of surface low pressure, all contributing to widespread light snowfall over western into portions of central North Dakota early this morning. Current Winter Weather Adv. for snow remains on track as we still expect the higher snowfall amounts/rates in the far southwest where the above mentioned forcing mechanisms best line up. Temperatures overnight have been slow to cool thanks to extensive cloud cover and mainly neutral temperature advection. This has resulted in wind chills to not be as cold as earlier predicted, though a few places reaching/exceeding criteria. Also, with CAA beginning already this morning and winds increasing from the north wind chill values expected to be dropping through the day so will maintain the wind chill advisory as is through the afternoon. Snow will be on the decrease from north to south today as forcing diminishes and drier air associated with Arctic high pressure moves into the region. For this first round of snow still looks like the southwest will pick up anywhere from 3-4 inches through this morning with amounts tapering off to the north and east. Next round of snow still set to start up late tonight into the day Saturday as a strong mid level embedded S/WV impulse moves across Montana and into the western Dakotas. Another 1-2 inches still looks good for the southwest through the day Saturday. Thus will maintain the Winter Weather Advisory as is with this product issuance. Temperatures today will be steady to falling as the Arctic air pushes south ahead of a 1050 surface high, then getting nasty after dark. Gradient winds don't let up until overnight tonight so expect a steady 10KT sfc wind out of the north for much of the night. Coupled with sfc temperatures plummeting to -20 to -30, wind chill warning criteria will be met most areas tonight. Was hoping for the day crew to issue wind chill warning headlines with the current wind chill adv. out to avoid confusion. Understandably surrounding offices due to the high confidence of our forecast felt headlines were needed past 00Z. Thus will issue a wind chill warning starting 00Z Sat (Friday evening) for my entire area. Arctic air lingers through the weekend and into early next week. While wind chills will moderate during the daylight hours this weekend esp. west and south, warning criteria will be met during the night and morning hours pretty much across my entire area. Thus will keep things simple and have the WC Warning valid through 18Z New Year's Day (Monday). .LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday) Issued at 440 AM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 Temperatures moderating highlight the extended forecast. Lingering cold air New Year's Day/evening may warrant additional wind chill headlines. Ridging over the west coast early next week finally starts to nudge east into the Rockies towards the middle of the week. This will push the path of reinforced shots of Arctic air to more over the Great Lakes region versus the Northern Plains, allowing our temperatures to slowly moderate but still cold and below normal. Both the GFS/EC show an embedded clipper pushing south across the region Tuesday/Tuesday night bringing a cool down for Wed and another period where advisory wind chill values will be possible.
