...Dangerous Winter Storm To Impact The Region Later Tonight
through Friday Night...Dangerous Travel Expected...

.A dangerous winter storm will impact the area tonight through 
Friday night. This storm will contain strong winds, heavy snow, 
rain, a wintry mix, and thunderstorms. Due to considerable snow 
accumulations and strong wind, there will be significant impacts 
to travel for most of the area. Blizzard warnings have been posted
for portions of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa while 
winter storm warnings and advisories have been posted for the 
rest of the area.

Rain and some snow will move in this evening with minimal impact
expected on travel or activities. Travel will then become
dangerous overnight through Friday as snow becomes heavy coupled 
with strong northerly winds causing blowing and drifting of the 
snow. Snow accumulations from 1 to 4 inches are expected 
overnight, highest north of a Charles City Iowa, Winona 
Minnesota, and Black River Falls Wisconsin line. Some thundersnow 
will also occur, adding to snowfall rates and reduced visibilities.
Light icing could also mainly south of I-90.

Plan on mostly snow continuing Friday through Friday night,
although a mix with rain or freezing precipitation could occur
near and south of Interstate 90 at times during the day Friday. 
An additional 4 to 12 inches of snow is expected Friday through 
Friday night with the highest amounts expected across southeast 
Minnesota into west central Wisconsin.

Strong north winds with gusts 35 to 45 mph will cause significant
blowing and drifting of the snow Friday and Friday night which
will cause some whiteouts. This will be especially true in open
and unsheltered areas.

Expect any slush or standing water to freeze Friday night into
Saturday morning.

  tapering off Friday night.

* Total snow accumulations tonight through Friday night in the 6
  to 10 inch range. Snow rates up to 2 inches an hour at times

  drifting of the snow with some whiteouts also likely,

As of 100 AM, precipitation has moved northward, impacting the 
entire area. For areas along and northwest of a line from Charles 
City Iowa, to Sparta to Steven's Point Wisconsin, moderate to 
heavy snow is falling, with some embedded thundersnow. South and 
east of this line, precipitation is falling as rain or a wintry 
mix. Snow or a wintry mix will continue overnight into Friday for 
most areas. 2 to 4 inches of snow have already fallen across 
portions of southeast Minnesota with lesser amounts south and 
east. Many area roads have become snow covered and slick, 
resulting in numerous slide offs. In addition, northeast winds 
west of the Mississippi River have gusted to 35 MPH at times, 
resulting in considerable blowing snow with visibilities reduced 
to 1 mile or less at times. 

Dangerous travel will continue overnight through Friday as snow 
becomes heavy coupled with strong northerly winds causing blowing 
and drifting of the snow. Snow accumulations from 1 to 4 inches 
are expected overnight, highest north of a Charles City Iowa, 
Winona Minnesota, and Black River Falls Wisconsin line. Some 
thundersnow will also occur, adding to snowfall rates and reduced 
visibilities. Light icing could also mainly south of I-90.

Plan on mostly snow continuing Friday through Friday night,
although a mix with rain or freezing precipitation could occur
near and south of Interstate 90 at times during the day Friday.
An additional 4 to 12 inches of snow is expected Friday through
Friday night with the highest amounts expected across southeast
Minnesota into west central Wisconsin.

Strong north winds with gusts 35 to 45 mph will cause significant
blowing and drifting of the snow Friday and Friday night which
will cause some whiteouts. This will be especially true in open
and unsheltered areas.

Expect any slush or standing water to freeze Friday night into
Saturday morning.

across parts of southeast Minnesota. Farther to the south,

into southwest Wisconsin and parts of far northeast Iowa, with

.A significant winter storm will continue to impact the region
through tonight with a combination of snow, freezing drizzle, and
wind. 

As of mid morning, heavy snow from the overnight hours had tapered
off to a mix of light rain, freezing drizzle, and snow across the
area. Snow totals of 6 to 12 inches were common along and either
side of a line from Charles City, Iowa to Rochester, Minnesota to
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with amounts tapering to less than an inch
across southwest Wisconsin and portions of far northeast Iowa near
the Mississippi River. Where heavy snow occurred, some blowing and
drifting of snow was also noted, though conditions had improved by
10 am in many areas.

Through the afternoon and evening hours, some light snow is
expected to redevelop eastward across the area, but with mainly
light additional accumulation. With continued stronger winds, some
blowing and drifting snow remains possible over parts of southeast
Minnesota and northeast Iowa where blizzard conditions may be
found at times along with hazardous travel. Farther south and east
into western and southwestern Wisconsin, precipitation for today
will remain a mix of light rain and snow, mixed with freezing

...Periods of Snow Return into the Evening...

.After a break in accumulating snowfall for many areas today,
a period of light to moderate snow will return through the 
evening and nighttime hours, gradually tapering off from west to 
east after midnight. 

While road conditions have improved in many areas through the
daylight hours, the onset of additional snow and falling
temperatures will likely result in slick roads and hazardous 
travel at times. Additionally, continued gusty northerly winds
will result in some blowing and drifting of snow, especially for
open areas west of the Mississippi River, though the threat for
blizzard conditions has ended.
