Not a whole lot going on weather wise at the moment. That is set
to change this afternoon as moisture increases once again. Plenty
of over lake instability with 850-lake delta ts in the upper teens
to lower 20s. Models do not have a lot of flow to focus lake
effect snows across northern lower today so heavier activity will
likely hug the lake shore and not move too far inland.
However...a rather robust band already ongoing over southern Lake
Superior will likely push onshore across the Whitefish Point and
Paradise areas this afternoon with the loss of the land breeze.
Therefore...after collaboration with WFO MQT will go ahead and
start a Winter Storm Warning for Chippewa County at 4 pm this
afternoon and run it all the way through Wednesday evening...even
though a break from activity is likely overnight tonight. As far
as northern lower goes...will have to kind of see how the les
develops with possible headlines for Leelanau, Antrim Charlevoix
and Emmett Counties. The best activity is still expected to begin
late tonight as winds pick up and veer into the west northwest so
will address the headlines with that in the afternoon package.

High impact weather potential: Accumulating snow.
Pattern synopsis and forecast:
Pretty quiet out there right now. Still seeing some lake clouds in
weaker westerly flow into lower Michigan, but there has been a trend
for drying and gradually clearing away from Lake Michigan. The
shallowing/thinning of moisture underneath the inversion has also
taken snow showers down to just some flurries. Focus now turns to
shortwave trough and associated sfc low pressure with light snow
pressing eastward toward the mid Mississippi valley, as well as an
arctic front laid out across North Dakota and Minnesota.
Things remain rather quiet through the morning, with no snow across
the region while an axis of higher pressure is laid out across srn
lower Michigan. This keeps a weak westerly flow coming in off Lake
Michigan. The aforementioned shortwave trough with upper divergence,
DPVA and WAA will result in the development of low pressure through
the Ohio river valley later this afternoon, which deepens
substantially tonight in New England. Moisture deepens by late this
afternoon and evening as the nrn fringe of the forcing spreads in
light synoptic snows into primarily lower Michigan. At the same
time, this moisture/snow will be seeding increasingly impressive
overlake instability (inversions almost non-existent) through all of
tonight. The weak west/WSW flow will result in the redevelopment of
a narrow corridor of what could be very impressive snowfall clinging
close to the NW lower coastline and into Drummond Island. The deeper
moisture strips out later tonight, and the arctic front will be
approaching the region, pulled toward us by tightening pressure
gradient on the backside of deepening New England sfc low. The
increased westerly flow will drag lake effect snows further inland
to lower Michigan and western sections of Chip/Mack counties.
Hi-res data hinting at snows starting to accumulate decently by late
this afternoon in NW lower, with amounts over an inch, and then
several more tonight and further inland, encompassing much of the
Winter storm Watch. No changes planned right now, but accumulating
snow is likely to begin a bit sooner. A solid 2 to 5 inches late
today into tonight.

.SHORT TERM...(Monday through Tuesday)

...Possible Moderate to Heavy Snow Fall...
High Impact Weather Potential...Lake effect snow, possibly heavy at
times, in the northwest flow areas on Monday. This may continue into
Tuesday.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...As noted on previous nights, the 500 mb
vortex that is sinking into the Hudson Bay region of northern
Ontario will sink farther south as a series of fast moving, but
strong shortwaves rotate around the base of the low and continue to
drag the cold air into the Upper Great Lakes, and Michigan. The GFS
and ECMWF have similar solutions with the NW flow LES pattern
expected to continue into Tuesday and Tuesday night. 850 mb
temperatures on Monday will fall as the cold front moves into the
region with temperatures at 12z/Mon around -15c falling to -25C in N
Lake Michigan by 00z/Tue. Temperatures continue to fall Monday night
so that Northern Michigan (E Upper and N Lower) will be around -25c
from Monday night through 12z/Wed. Winds also look to remain
consistent with NW flow patterns through the same time frame as
well.
Primary Forecast concerns...Main concern is the LES with a couple of
caveats for the forecast (there are always caveats for LES). 1.
Temperatures being sub -20C...This could produce the very fine
powdery snow (like talcum) which would lower visibilities in the
snow bands significantly, but not accumulate as much. However, with
the heat flux off the lakes, it is possible that in the clouds 850
mb temperatures could be a bit warmer and larger flakes, producing
heavy snowfall amounts will be possible. 2. Wind directions...While
the models have been showing a consistent NW flow pattern, there are
some, and usually realized, "wiggles" in the wind pattern enough
that the bands move and converge at times. This looks to be the case
on Monday night into Tuesday, so amounts could be have some heavy
spots during those times, despite the -25C powdery snow that is
expected.
With the cold 850 mb temperatures, the sfc temperatures will fall as
well. As the temperatures fall Monday, the winds will pick up as
well. At this point the forecasted wind chills are -10F to -15F in N
Lower and -15F to -20F in E Upper for Monday night through Wednesday
morning. While not advisory wind chills, this will be some of the
chilliest air that we have had this season as far as wind chills are
are concerned.

Extended (Wednesday (27) through Saturday (30))...As mentioned the
past few days, The trough at 500 mb is stuck over the Great Lakes,
and hence we are in the cold air for the foreseeable future. The
trend of the models is for the trough to continue through the next 7
days. With the cold air in the region and the generally NW flow
through most of days 4-7, will expect that we will have varying days
of lake effect snow. Most of this should remain light as the
moisture over the next couple of days will begin to drop off as the
jet stream pulls a little north later in the period. Will expect
that the snow amounts will minor to light through the extended
period.

Lake effect clouds and snow showers will expand/redevelop this
afternoon as deeper moisture and overlake instability arrive due
to troughing aloft and low pressure tracking through the Ohio
valley. WSW/SW flow regimes will impact the NW lower airports with
what could be periods of fairly heavy lake snows for this
afternoon and evening. Winds ramp up and become gusty overnight
out of the W/WNW, allowing for lake snows to penetrate further
inland, and mainly between TVC/PLN. Total snowfall is difficult,
but 2 to 4 inches through tonight is definitely possible, locally
higher. Snow ratios 20/22:1.

of the day resulting in relatively lighter westerly winds. Low
pressure deepens substantially late tonight into Monday, tightening
the pressure gradient and allowing for an arctic front to cross into
nrn Michigan. Advisory wind speeds will be common over all nearshore
waters late tonight through Monday night, and into Tuesday for much
of Lakes Michigan and Huron.
