.SYNOPSIS...
An increasingly frigid Arctic airmass will impact the region
through the weekend. Lake effect snows will continue to diminish
tonight.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Wind Chill Advisory for the western/southern Adirondacks and
central and southeastern Catskills from 1 AM through 7 PM
Wednesday.

Lake effect snows not extending as far east as winds slowly
diminish across the region. Just some minor adjustments to the
temperatures and sky cover through daybreak and also slight
chances for snow showers into southern Herkimer County through
daybreak. The previous AFD has a few more details through today
and is below...

Low temperatures forecast to fall below zero for most areas
north of I-90, and between zero and 10 above to the south.
The combination of very cold temperatures and some wind will
produce wind chill values of -15 to -25 F across the advisory
area overnight.

For Wednesday, some residual snow showers may impact the western
Mohawk Valley and eastern Catskills as a reinforcing cold front
settles southward, and some Lake moisture continues to drain east
ahead of the boundary. Otherwise, the main story will be
progressively colder temperatures behind the front. Temperatures may
only briefly rise into the single digits and teens, before falling
in the afternoon.

Wind chill values will remain between -10F and -20F across the
southern Adirondacks and eastern Catskills, therefore the Wind Chill
Advisory will remain in effect through the day.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High confidence in dangerously cold wind chills for the short
term period. Wednesday night into Thursday night appears to be
the coldest period of the week. Additional wind chill headlines
will be needed.

Wednesday night, upper-level flow becomes confluent and low-
amplitude ridging will be located over the western Great Lakes,
supporting an eastward expansion of the 1040 mb Upper Midwest
anticyclone. Meanwhile, the cyclone associated with our
Christmas snowfall will be lingering off the coast of Labrador
at around 970 mb. The juxtaposition of these two pressure
systems will result in a good low-level pressure gradient and
reinforcing cold air advection. H850 temps will approach -25C,
which is 2 to 3 standard deviations below normal per the GEFS,
and 1000-500 mb thicknesses will be around 500 dam. Lows look to
range from 5F to -20F, with northwest winds of 5 to 15 kt
resulting in minimum wind chills of -5F to -40F. Additional
wind chill headlines are a near certainty. In collaboration with
surrounding offices, opted against any wind chill headlines
covering this time period to avoid confusion with the existing
wind chill advisory in effect for tonight. A couple of lingering
snow showers or flurries are possible over the Mohawk/Schoharie
Valleys and the Catskills, but little to no additional
accumulation.

Thursday, despite plenty of sunshine beneath low-level
northwesterly flow, frigid temperatures will continue with highs
about -5F to 20F. Northwesterly winds will remain gusty as the
pressure gradient remains, resulting in the highest wind chill
values only reaching -20F to 5F. Thursday night could be the
best radiational cooling night as the high briefly translates
overhead. Lows will be below zero for most of the forecast area,
possibly as cold as -25F in the Adirondacks. A modest increase
in cloud cover may occur, however, which could keep somewhat of
a floor on low temps. Winds will diminish but still result in
wind chills of 0F to -30F.

Friday will remain frigid with H850 temps still around -20F.
Clouds may increase somewhat ahead of a shearing upper impulse.
Model consensus favors the day mainly remaining dry but do have
slight chance PoPs over roughly the southwestern half of the
forecast area.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Mean upper troughing over eastern North America continues with
well-below normal temperatures for the long term forecast period.

Global deterministic models suggest the potential for a coastal
system to track northeastward off the Eastern Seaboard Saturday into
Sunday. The GFS has the system developing East of the Carolinas and
staying well to our southeast early Saturday while the ECMWF has the
system phasing with a piece of energy traversing over the Great
Lakes, suggesting more sensible weather over eastern NY & western
New England. Ensemble guidance shows significant spread within the
H500 height field suggesting high uncertainty in the timing and
track of the system, therefore going with slight chance to chance
PoPs on Saturday/Sunday. Lake effect snow looks to develop Sunday
and Monday over the western Adirondacks/Mohawk valley.

High (low) temperatures throughout the period will be 0-10 F (-15 to
-10 F) North of the Capital Region, 5-15 F (-10 to 0 F) over the
Capital Region, and 10-20 F (-5 to 5 F) to the South over the Mid-
Hudson Valley and western New England. Wind Chill values will drop
well below zero (approaching -30 F over Adirondacks and -5 to -25 F
over eastern NY/western New England).

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A weak cold front will settle southward across the TAF sites
Wednesday afternoon, as high pressure builds across from the
Great Lakes and southeast Canada.

VFR conditions are expected at the TAF sites through at least
06Z/Wed. Occasional Cigs between 4000-6000 FT AGL could occur,
mainly Wednesday afternoon as the aforementioned front passes. A
few snow flurries could occur, but overall probability appears
too low at this time to include mention in TAFs.

Through mid morning, winds will be mainly from the west at 5-10
KT. Later this morning through this afternoon, winds will
gradually veer into the west to northwest and increase slightly
to 8-12 KT, with some gusts of 20-25 KT possible. These winds
should persist through Wednesday night.
