Warning, which is in effect until 4 AM EDT Wednesday. The Winter
Storm Warning is no longer in effect.

* LOCATIONS...the Lake George Saratoga region, the Greater Capital
  Region including the Helderbergs and Schoharie Valley in New
  York, and Bennington County in Vermont.

* HAZARD TYPES...Heavy snowfall, white-out conditions and 
  blowing and drifting of snow.

* Snow Accumulations...18 to 24 inches, with locally higher
  amounts of up to three feet possible across higher terrain in
  southern Vermont.

* Snowfall rates...2 to 4 inches per hour during the day today.

.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful coastal storm will impact the region late
Monday night into Wednesday with significant snowfall accumulations.
Below normal temperatures will persist through the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1210 pm, high clouds continue to stream in within and to
the north of the Capital District, with more sun to the south.
Just a few tweaks to the going forecast.

Previous discussion...For today...A large ridge of high
pressure will be across the region with plenty of sunshine to
start the day although clouds will start to increase during the
afternoon ahead of the next system. Highs will be milder than
recent days ranging from the upper teens to lower 30s. There
will also be much less wind with winds generally less than 10
mph.

For tonight...A deep surface low is expected to track near Delmarva
and head northeast. This will set the stage for a large snowfall
event across much of the northeast US. Snowfall is expected to
develop around midnight across our southern areas and quickly expand
northeastward. By daybreak several inches of snow will likely have
already fallen across areas south of the Greater Capital District
with an inch or so from the Capital District northward. Lows
tonight will be in the upper single digits to lower 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Winter Storm Warning now in effect for all of eastern NY and
adjacent western New England from midnight tonight through 8 PM
EDT Wednesday...

00Z/13 model consensus continues to tighten regarding the storm
track and resulting QPF/Snow amts across the region, although
the 00Z/13 GFS and GEFS remain on the eastern envelope of
solutions, while the 00Z/13 ECMWF, NAM and SREFs remain on the
western side. The western members would imply widespread
snowfall amts of 1 to 2 feet or even locally greater across most
of eastern NY/western New England. Since this is the first
model cycle exhibiting such extreme amounts, have hedged in
accordance with WPC toward greater amts regionwide, although not
quite to the higher extreme, due to the much lighter amts
suggested by the GFS and GEFS, which have been rather consistent
over the last 3 or 4 cycle.

So, with confidence increasing further for heavy snowfall, the
previous winter storm watch across northern areas has been
upgraded to a warning. The warning is in effect from midnight
tonight, through 8 PM Wednesday, although the heaviest snowfall
and greatest impacts are most likely to occur Tuesday into
Tuesday evening.

Strong mid level frontogenetical forcing is suggested in
multiple models across and east of the Hudson River, with the
longest duration occurring from the SE Catskills through the
mid Hudson Valley, NW CT and western MA. In these areas, have
raised snowfall totals into the 18-24 inch range, with mainly
12-18 inches expected elsewhere, except for 8-12 inches across
portions of the western Adirondacks, where there remains some
uncertainty regarding how far inland heavier snow bands and/or
deformation develops.

North to northeast winds will increase into the 10-20 mph range,
with some gusts of 30-35 mph possible in valleys, and 35-40 mph
across some higher elevations. Some of the aforementioned models
on the westernmost envelope of solutions suggest the potential
for even stronger winds, esp across portions of NW CT, the mid
Hudson Valley and Berkshires. If this potential increases with
the westernmost solutions becoming more likely to verify, then
an upgrade to blizzard warnings will be needed for at least some
of these areas, but would like to follow trends with next main
model cycle in case the last cycle was just an aberration with
the westward shift, or if indeed this was a true developing
trend.

Temperatures Tuesday are expected to be in the teens to
lower/mid 20s. It is quite possible that temperatures actually
fall through the day as strong wet bulb cooling occurs with the
deep dry air to our north and northeast draining in the low
levels, despite heavier precipitation falling through it. Would
not be surprised if some areas fall into the lower/mid teens,
even in the Hudson River Valley, by Tuesday afternoon.

The strongest synoptic forcing should lift north/northeast of
the region Tuesday evening, however the combination of mesoscale
processes including orographic lift and also possible Mohawk-
Hudson Convergence, along with some mid level deformation, may
lead to additional areas of moderate to locally heavy snow into
Tuesday evening before eventually tapering off later at night.

Periods of lighter snow should continue through Wednesday, with
slightly heavier/more persistent snow possible across west
facing slopes of the Green Mtns/Taconics and Berkshires. The
areal coverage of snow/snow showers should decrease Wed night.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Thursday through Friday...A large ridge of high pressure will build
east from the Ohio Valley on Thursday and move into the northeast US
on Friday providing fair weather and moderating temperatures. Highs
on Thursday will be in the upper teens to around with lows Thursday
night in the single digits to middle teens and highs on Friday in
the upper 20s to upper 30s.

Friday night through Saturday...A clipper type system will race
across the Great Lakes region Friday night and move through the
northeast on Saturday brining some light precipitation to the region
mainly during the day on Saturday. Lows Friday night will be in the
teens to around 20 with highs on Saturday in the mid 30s to around
40.

Saturday night and Sunday...There may be some lingering light
precipitation around as a secondary trough passes through the
region. Lows Saturday night will be in the mid teens to mid 20s with
highs on Sunday in the upper 20s to lower 40s.

.AVIATION /17Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Benign aviation conditions for the remainder of the day and at
least the first part of the overnight hours as midlevel clouds
continue to spread across the area. A powerful nor'easter will
move up the coast tonight and Monday, spreading snowfall across
the terminals. The onset time of the snow looks to be around 06Z
for KPOU to 10Z for KGFL. IFR conditions are quickly expected
within an hour or two after the onset of snow. The snow will
become heavy at times after 12Z, especially over KPOU, KALB, and
KPSF. Near zero visibility is possible at times for these
terminals in the last 4-6 hours of the TAF period due to the
combination of heavy snow and gusty northerly winds causing the
fluffy snow to blow and drift.

Northwesterly winds at 10 kt or less today will become light and
variable early this evening into tonight. Winds will become
northeasterly to northerly Monday morning, gusting to 20-25 kt
at times late in the TAF period.
