High pressure moves off the New England coast this evening. Low
pressure will deepen as it lifts northeast along the Mid
Atlantic coast tonight and Tuesday...before pushing out to sea
Tuesday night and Wednesday. A cold front crosses the local area
late Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
845 pm update...Afternoon forecast working out very well.
Initial area of rainfall has moved into NE NC, and will spread
into southside Hampton Roads over the next 1-2 hours. Additional
rainfall will move northward through eastern NC and into VA
later tonight. All this covered well in afternoon forecast, and
have only made minor tweaks to POPs/hourly temps. Current
headlines also look to be in good shape and no updates planned
this evening.

     Previous Discussion...Moisture beginning to spread N from
eastern NC and SE VA attm as clouds increase for all areas. PoPs
averaging 20-50% across srn/SE VA into NE NC this
evening...increasing after midnight to 50-70% N and to 100% S as
low pres begins its trek NE invof coastal GA-SC. Moderate/heavy
rainfall threat increases across SE VA-NE NC mainly after
midnight. No adjustments made to Flash Flood Watch
attm...however...a more inland track to the low may spread
higher QPF a little farther inland by late tonight. Lows from
the l60s W to around 70F far SE. NE winds will remain
gusty...highest along the coast.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Regardless of eventual track to low pres through coastal NC
toward the VA Capes Tue...widespread RA expected along w/
periods of gusty winds (highest at the coast). PoPs 50-80% far W
and N...to 100% elsewhere. Total QPF in the Flash Flood Watch
areas 2-5 inches...locally higher amounts possible...while
elsewhere 1/2-2 inches expected. Have added a tier of locations
w/ a Wind Advisory (just inland of the current High Watch
Watch). For ern VA and much of lower SE MD eastern shore-NE
NC...expecting 20-35 mph...gusts 40-55 mph...again highest
toward the coast. May be a brief period of even speeds (would
likely be confined to the immediate coast in ern or SE VA-NE NC)
Tue afternoon or early evening as low pres tracks through the
VA Capes while strengthening. Highs in the u60s-l70s along-W of
I 95 to the m70s in SE VA-NE NC.

Subsidence behind departing low begins to dry out the local area
Tue night...then Wed is a partly sunny and dry day. Lows around
60F NW to around 70F SE. Highs 75-80F. A cold front approaches
from the NW late Thu. Highs in the l-m80s.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Upper level trough amplifies while tracking through the NE
CONUS Thu night/Fri...resulting in sfc hi pres to build into the
local area from the NNW. Flow aloft becomes zonal by the
weekend...leading to a return of moisture and potential for at
least SCT PoPs (and increased cloudiness)...which may linger
into Mon. Highs Fri in the u70s-around 80F...around 80F
Sat...and in the l-m80s Sun/Mon. Lows Thu night in the l-m60s
inland to around 70F at the coast in SE VA-NE NC...u50s W to
m60s SE Fri night...60-70F Sat night...then the u60s-l70s Sun
night.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
MVFR/IFR conditions prevail across southern portions of the
area as of 06Z in heavier rain showers associated with potential
tropical cyclone #10. Still VFR with cigs 4 to 6 k ft farther
N, but expect deteriorating conditions to gradually spread N
through 09Z. IFR conditions will be likely at all TAF sites by
09-12Z through 18Z or so. Precipitation will be heaviest at
southeastern TAF sites (ECG, ORF, PHF) with shorter duration
heavy showers farther north and west. IFR visibilities will be
possible at times with heavier showers. Windy conditions are
also expected near the coast as the low pressure system
approaches the region. ENE winds to gust to around 30 knots
early this morning with a few hrs later this morning likely
seeing a lull, then winds pick up and potentially gust to 35
knots or greater near the coast from the N/NE later this aftn
into the early evening. Inland gusts will avg 20-30 kt.

Outlook: Potential tropical cyclone 10 departs the region
quickly late night, taking any sub-VFR conditions and winds with
it. Wednesday looks quiet with high pressure building across
the area. Increasing moisture may allow for showers and periodic
flight restrictions from late Thu through Sat.

.MARINE...
Update...Gale Warnings no in effect through tonight. SCA flags
have been cancelled. Winds are showing a marked increase as low
pressure begins to strengthen just off the srn SC coast late
this evening. Storm Watch remains in effect with brief periods
of 45-50kt gusts possible this afternoon as the coastal system
nears the Mid Atlantic Coast. Seas continue to run higher than
model guidance and have made adjustments as necessary, which
will carry over into seas forecast for Tuesday.

Previous discussion...
Low pressure will continue to organize tonight as it heads NE
along the Carolina coast. Meanwhile, sfc high pressure remains
entrenched over New England. The pressure gradient between these
two features will continue to promote adverse marine conditions
through the overnight period, and then quickly worsening
conditions Tuesday morning as the low strengthens over the NC
OBX. Regardless of whether the low takes on tropical
characteristics, locally we can still expect adverse/dangerous
marine conditions into Tuesday night. Will continue SCA
headlines for all areas until 4am Tuesday at which time Gale
Warnings will go into effect. E/NE Winds will be 15-25 kt with
gusts to 30 kt thru early Tue morning, then 25-35 kt with gusts
to 35-45 kt Tues/Tues eve (perhaps up to 50 kt coastal
waters/lower Bay). Seas 7-9 feet currently will build to 8-12 ft
Tuesday. Waves in the Bay will build to 5-7 ft (and up to 8 ft
at the mouth). Nearshore breaking waves have or will reach 8+ ft
by tonight, so have a high surf advisory for our entire
coastline into Tuesday night. The low shoots out to see
Wednesday with lowering winds and gradually subsiding seas later
Tuesday night into Wednesday. Since a high surf advisory is in
place no need to carry a high rip risk/beach hazard statement as
it is implied. Will carry mention of high rips in text of CFW.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A strong area of high pressure centered over New England this
morning and general low pressure along the SE coast where a
stalled frontal boundary remains in place from late last week.
This overall pattern has brought a prolonged period of NE flow
with winds of 20 to 25 kt. So far the tides have shown just a
small uptick with anomalies building to around 1 ft. This
pattern will continue today with anomalies again ticking up to
around 1 to 1.25 ft. A few sites along the Western Chesapeake
Bay may approach minor flood stage with the afternoon high tide,
but most areas will stay below advisory criteria for this
cycle.

Expect the winds to begin to increase later tonight and into
Tuesday as Low pressure that is expected to form along this
stalled frontal boundary lifts NE into Eastern NC by Tuesday
afternoon. This will cause the winds to increase with anomalies
reaching 2 to 2.5 Ft in the lower Bay and 1 - 2 ft elsewhere.
Minor to moderate flooding is possible and a coastal flood watch
or warning may be issued later today for Tuesday afternoon's
high tide. The high tide early Wednesday morning may still be
high even though the wind will be switching to the NW as the
strong low heads out to sea and away from the coast.
