.SYNOPSIS...
Aloft...
The long wave pattern consisting of a strong ridge over the West
Coast of North America and Eastern Alaska with a deep trough over
the Bering Sea will persist through Mon, and then begin to break
down next week. This will keep stormy conditions with winds, rain,
snow and blowing snow and very warm conditions along the West
Coast of Alaska through the weekend, while the Interior and North
Slope remain dry with warm conditions aloft that will surface in
wind locations and higher terrain, with strong inversions in less
windy areas.

Conditions will gradually cool next week and become closer to
normal by the end of next week.

850 mb temperatures above 0C over most of northern Alaska will
persist through Sat, then cool along the West Coast Sat night
and Sun, and over the western Interior Mon.

Surface...
A 1046 mb high over the Copper River Basin and Yukon of Canada
will persist tonight then weaken very slowly through Mon.
This is causing southerly gap winds gusting 75 mph through AK
Range passes. These winds will decrease Sat as the high weakens
over the Copper Basin. Easterly Tanana Valley jet and Yukon
Valley near Eagle winds are blowing out of the Yukon and will
persist through Sun.

An Arctic front from Barter Island to Wainwright will persist
through Sun and possibly into Mon. High pressure will build north
of the Coast Tonight through Sun. This will cause east winds
to develop tonight from Barrow east with fog over the weekend.
There will be south winds gusting through Brooks Range passes
tonight blowing into this front that will decrease Sat as the high
build north of the coast.

A 977 mb low in the Central Bering Sea will move to 250 nm west
of Gambell as a 986 mb low by 3am Sat, and to just south of
Wrangel Island as a 993 mb low by 3pm Sat. An occluded front
weather front extending east from this low will move to Wrangel
Island Gambell to the southeast Bering Sea by 3am Sat then persist
through Sun. A frontal wave in the Gulf of AK will move northwest
to Nunivak Island as a 990 mb low by 3pm Sat, and to near
Savoonga as a 1002 mb low by 3pm Sun, then dissipating. Expect
4-10 inches of snow along the front in zones 213 and 214 through
Sun with the heaviest snow in the Bering Strait. There will be
periods of rain and freezing rain and local blizzard conditions as
well. Southeast winds gusting 50-60 mph along and just southeast
of the front will persist tonight then decrease slowly Sat night
into Sun. Snow and winds in zone 211 will decrease by Sat am.

An Arctic cold front in the western Bering Sea will move east to
merge with the previously mentioned occluded front Sat night.
This will change precipitation to all snow along the front Sat
night, and also with winds to westerly west of the front.

.DISCUSSION...
Models initialize well at h500 and show similar solution through
3pm Sun. At the surface models initialize about 4 mb too weak on
the pressure of the surface high over the Copper River Basin and
southern Yukon of Canada. Will bump up winds 5-10 kt through the
Alaska Range and Tanana Valley through tonight due to the stronger
high pressure. After 3pm Sun the NAM and ECMF agree on keeping a
low near St Lawrence Island into Mon while the GFS weakens it and
moves it north more quickly. Prefer the NAM and ECMF solution Sun
night and Mon. From Mon night through next week see gradual
changes in the short wave strength and locations.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Coastal Flood Advisory zone 213 through Sat 6am especially along
southeast facing coasts. Sea level will decrease Sat and Sun as
winds decrease.
