Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
A strong area of low pressure moving eastward just north of the
Aleutians will cause winds to pick up today on St. Lawrence Island
as well as across the west coast of Alaska south of the Bering
Strait. The models are in decent agreement out through early
Monday, but they then start to diverge on the major synoptic scale
features (particularly in the handling next low moving eastward
just north of the Aleutians that will affect the west coast on
Tuesday).

Aloft, at 500 mb, the current pattern over the state has a 515 dam
low centered over Fairbanks, a ridge stretching from King Salmon
to Point Hope with a strong 487 dam low centered about 200 miles
northwest of Nikolski. The low near Fairbanks will move west today
while the stronger low in the Bering Sea will slowly move to the
east. By Monday morning the low that is currently over Fairbanks
will move to near Unalakleet and will move to near St. Lawrence
Island by Monday Evening. The Low that is currently over the
Bering Sea will move into Bristol Bay by Monday morning and to
near Kodiak by Monday evening. Another strong low will move into
the western Aleutians by Monday morning. This low will move to be
near St. Paul Island by Tuesday morning and into Kuskokwim Bay
Wednesday morning although the models vary on the exact placement
details.

At the Surface, a strong 943 mb low 125 NM SW of St. Paul Island
will move to just south of St. Paul Island by this evening. The
low will continue moving east, beginning to weaken, and will be
200 NM NW of Cold Bay by early Monday morning and into Bristol Bay
by Monday afternoon. Another low looks to move across the western
Aleutians on Monday and will strengthen significantly Monday
evening. The models differ on the depth of this feature; however,
by late Monday evening this low will just north of Nikolski and
will move to just south of St. Paul Island by Tuesday morning.
Thereafter, the models differ significantly on the track of this
feature. An area of high pressure will persist today stretching
from the Beaufort Sea coast into the northern Interior. A trough
of low pressure will strengthen today just north of the Alaska
Range. This trough looks to persist into at least the middle of
the upcoming week.

Central and Eastern Interior: Satellite shows some lower stratus
again this morning over the Interior; however, it is far less
extensive than this time yesterday. Thus, many locations are
colder than this time yesterday due to less extensive cloud cover.
Temperatures aloft over the Interior look to begin a warming
trend today that will continue into Wednesday. Thus, there will a
bit of a warming trend in surface temperatures as well. A trough
will intensify today just north of the Alaska Range. This will
result in a Tanana Valley Jet developing causing the winds to
increase today in Delta Junction (and most of the rest of zone 223
as well). The trough just north of the Alaska Range combined with
relatively high pressure to the south of the range will result in
some gap winds through the passes through the middle of the week.
Wind speeds look to remain below advisory criteria through
Tuesday. Current guidance is showing that the winds in the Alaska
Range will pick up Tuesday night. Gusty winds winds are also
expected today into tonight at higher elevations north of
Fairbanks. Winds today and tonight in the Interior will likely
result in blowing snow over summits, near Delta Junction and in
the Passes of the Alaska Range; however, current thinking is that
the reduction to visibility will not be sufficient to warrant any
winter weather headlines for blowing snow. No accumulating
precipitation is expected for the Interior through Wednesday.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Areas of fog and lower stratus along
the Beaufort Sea coast this morning; however it doesn't extend
that far inland. Current expectation is that the fog and lower
stratus will likely move inland a little bit further as winds turn
more northerly in direction. No accumulating precipitation is
expected for the north Slope or Brooks Range through Wednesday.

West Coast and Western Interior: Winds will increase today on St.
Lawrence Island and along the west coast south of the Bering
Strait as a strong low in the Bering Strait approaches. The high
wind warning that is out for St. Lawrence Island looks to be in
good shape with gusts to 65 mph expected today. In addition to the
high winds on St Lawrence Island a high surf advisory is
currently out. Surf is expected to build today on St. Lawrence
Island peaking this evening. A winter advisory for blowing snow is
currently out for the Yukon Delta where gusts up to 50 mph may
reduce the visibility down to one half mile or less at times. A
winter weather advisory was also issued earlier in the shift for
the Kotzebue area due to blowing snow reducing the visibility to
less than one half mile at times. Current expectation is that
winds will decrease in Kotzebue this morning causing conditions
to improve. The next system will cause the winds to pick up again
south of the Bering Strait and over St. Lawrence Island late
Monday night and Tuesday. At the current time the models are not
in good agreement in the track of the low. Thus there is not
confidence in the exact placement and timing of the strongest
winds associated with this system. This will bring at least some
chance for higher surf over St. Lawrence Island (however, the
current GFS based storm surge guidance keeps the numbers lower
than the current system). In any event, there is a decent amount
of confidence that another round of strong winds is expected for
Tuesday for coastal areas south of the Bering Strait.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None; however, see the
west coast section above for more information about hazards in the
shorter term.
