.DISCUSSION...
The 00z models initialized well against the 00z surface analysis
and verified well against the 06z surface analysis. Model spread
is reasonable in the the short range but begins to exhibit
considerable spread in the mid and long range.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a 540 dm low over the central Gulf of Alaska
is in the process of spinning off a strong shortwave toward the
coast that will ride north and northwest along the back side of a
strong upper level ridge parked over the Yukon and northern
British Columbia. The strong shortwave along with favorable
dynamics is developing a rapidly deepening surface low along the
cold front that extends south into the central Pacific. The upper
level support continues to move north and west and will be over
the southern coast this evening and will continue to move north
and west into the western interior tonight. A strong gradient
develops this evening over Alaska Range where a mountain wave
event is expected to develop tonight and continue into early
Wednesday evening. High wind warnings have been issued for the
central and eastern Alaska Range beginning this evening and
continuing into Wednesday evening as 70 mph wind gusts are
expected to develop along and near the Alaska Range passes as well
as the northern foothills of the Alaska Range. High end Advisory
level winds are expected to extend north to near Delta Junction
with favored mid level wind direction and along and near the
western Alaska Range around the Farewell Lake area. Wind
advisories have been issued for these areas.

850 mb as well as 925 mb winds progs continue to indicate gusty
winds over much of the central and western interior especially
over the highway summits as this strong system moves out of
southcentral Alaska into the western interior. Will need to
monitor for need for additional wind headlines over interior
summits if the system proves stronger than currently advertised.
Wind gust as expected to be just below Advisory criteria at this
time however there continues to be differences in track and
strength from model run to model run.

Another aspect of this system will be the rain over the interior.
The semi-tropical origins of this system combined with strong
southerly flow will push snow levels to around 5000 feet over the
Brooks Range so all rain is expected below pass level and only a
rain snow mix expected over Atigun Pass. Deep southeast flow ahead
of this system will push a very moist airmass into the interior.
The southern portions of the eastern and central interior even
with considerable downsloping effects will still receive between
one quarter and one half inch of rainfall while the northern
portions of the eastern and central interior as well as the western
interior and southern Brooks Range are expected to receive between
one half and one inch of rainfall.

A secondary low develops over the interior of the North Slope
Wednesday night and produces a strong gradient along the North
Slope coast especially to the east of Barrow. Headline level winds
are likely to develop in these areas however momentum transport
will take coastal surge away from shore so no coastal hazards are
anticipated at this time.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
