.DISCUSSION...

Models...Good agreement and run to run continuity for the short
term solutions. Things get a bit sticky moving into the extended
as significant differences show up in the positions of some of the
players. Big picture, the long wave trough remains over the state
through the weekend with the axis over the West Coast. The trough
remains, but several lows will move in and out of it in different
configurations. Surface guidance initialized well against the
28/18Z surface analysis.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Long wave trough remains over the state,
seems like it has for at least a couple weeks now. Trough extends
south from a 512 dam low over the North Pole to a 540 dam low over
the central Arctic Plain, to a 538 dam low 200 nm south of Kodiak
Island. A 540 dam low over Cold Bay will merge with the low south
of Kodiak Island as the low moves over the Shelikof Strait at 530
dam. As the low over the Arctic Plain moves northeast to the
Beaufort Sea a 539 dam low will develop over the western Brooks
Range and dive south over Norton Sound by Wednesday morning, then
merge with the low over the Shelikof Strait over the southwest
mainland. A 531 dam low will develop over the Bering Strait
Wednesday night and move to the lower Yukon Delta Coast by Friday
morning as the low over the southwest mainland moves over the
northern Gulf of Alaska and weakens. A weak col area is centered
over the western Alaska Range this afternoon and will persist in
the area as ridging builds over the southeast interior tonight.
The ridging will push west to the middle Yukon River Valley
Tuesday with the axis moving north over the upper Yukon Flats,
continuing north to be over the eastern Arctic Coast by Wednesday
morning. A shortwave will move over the Gulf Coast behind the
ridge, and move north into the interior Wednesday night and over
the Brooks Range by Thursday morning. At 850 hpa...Zero isotherm
lies from Barter Island to Bettles to Galena to Shishmaref this
afternoon. By Wednesday afternoon it will lie from Old Crow YT to
Shaktoolik to Gambell. Temperatures over the southeast interior
will be warmest ranging from +4 to +10 through Thursday. The upper
level low over the Arctic will pull some temperatures around -10C
over the northwest Arctic Coast tonight into Wednesday morning.

Surface...Broad area of low pressure remains over the state with
a 1006 mb low over Demarcation Point this afternoon and weak
troughing extending south to a 983 mb low 200 nm south of Kodiak
Island. Not much change overnight as the lows move north with a
1000 mb low in the Beaufort Sea and troughing extending southwest
to 976 mb low over Kodiak Island. Ridging from a 1026 mb high over
the Siberian Arctic will push down over the northwest Arctic
Coast and into the Central Brooks Range as the low move northeast,
then gets pushed back north Tuesday as the low moves over Kodiak
Island. Leeside troughing develops Tuesday night north of the
Alaska Range, gap winds kicking up as pressure gradient tightens a
bit Wednesday morning into Thursday morning. The low over Kodiak
will move to the western Alaska Range on Thursday with a 999 mb
low developing over the Seward Peninsula as the high over the
Arctic moves west to 400 nm north of Point Barrow.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Onshore flow will prevail through
the week. Strong winds developing overnight on the eastern Arctic
Coast as the pressure gradient pinches a bit over the area. Winds
northwest to west at 25 mph gusting near 40 mph east of
Deadhorse. Remainder of the area will have north winds 5 to 15
mph. Remains cool over the area with snow again tonight and
Tuesday night as well in the Brooks Range. Accumulations of 1 to 2
inches tonight, and around 1 inch Tuesday night in Atigun Pass
and higher elevations. Warming trend later in the week will change
everything back to rain for all but the highest elevations in the
Range. Temperatures along the coast will remain cool through
Thursday with lows around freezing from Deadhorse west.

West Coast and Western Interior...Some high clouds being pulled
south over the area this evening, but otherwise generally fair
weather with mostly clear conditions south of Kotzebue Sound.
Pressure gradient over the coastal areas will be tightening up
over the next 24 to 36 hours as the low pressure moves over
mainland Alaska and high pressure persists over the Eastern Bering
Sea and Chukotka. Winds picking up to north or northeast at 15 to
30 mph with gusts on the outer Capes to around 50 mph. Inland
winds increasing to 5 to 20 mph. Temperatures not changing much,
but a few areas could dip down to freezing overnight tonight and
Wednesday night.

Central and Eastern Interior...A few breaks overnight tonight
after the tail end of this latest batch of showers moves
northeast. The low in the gulf will spin more showers into the
interior Tuesday, but some of it will be downsloped out so from
Fairbanks south will only see some sprinkles or a short period of
light rain. To the north of Fairbanks expect more rain, with
around 0.50 inch possible in a few locations. With the low
remaining over southcentral Alaska, expect bands of clouds and
showers to continue to spin north across the interior through the
week. Winds generally light and variable, except in the Alaska
range where gap winds will develop early Wednesday morning and
continue into Thursday morning before diminishing. Winds will be
south at 25 to 35 mph gusting to 45 mph near passes.

Marine...Seas building in the southern Chukchi Sea and through the
Bering Strait Tuesday night through Thursday to 9 to 11 feet.
Potential for High Surf west of Shishmaref on the northern Seward
Peninsula, Diomede, and the northeast coast of St Lawrence
Island Wednesday and Thursday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...Cool conditions will continue with Relative
Humidity values remaining above 40 percent in most areas.

.HYDROLOGY...Rivers rising a bit this week as the rain from the
last few days makes it into the mainstem rivers, but no
significant issues are expected.

...Snow and gusty winds in the Brooks Range...

Snow will taper off to snow showers tonight in the eastern Brooks
Range as low pressure moves off to the northeast. An additonal 1
to 2 inches of snow is expected tonight at pass level from around
2500 feet and above.

A cold front has crossed the Brooks Range this evening, which has
resulted in strong north winds between 20 to 30 mph in higher
passes, including Atigun Pass. This will cause localized
restrictions to visibility in blowing snow at times, mainly above
3000 feet. Strong winds will continue here through tonight and
possibly into Tuesday.

The weather system is expected to remain in the area through at
least midweek bringing periods of light snow to the area during
the overnight hours, and mixed rain and snow during the day.
