.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Now that the front has passed Southcentral Alaska, the flow
pattern aloft looks less defined as far as specific features to
key on. Generally, a broad trough exists from eastern Russia
eastward through Alaska. The most active part of the jet is well
south of the Western Aleutians with an embedded disturbance
showing some development in the form of a baroclinic leaf over the
area. Otherwise, scattered weak disturbances within the trough
are the only game in town as far as active weather is concerned.
The final push of cold advection is pushing onto the mainland,
evidenced by open cell cumulus and visible on water vapor, telling
of deep cold air and instability. From a sensible weather
perspective, generally broad southwesterly flow at the surface
with embedded showers.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Synoptically, models have a great handle on the evolution of the
upcoming pattern. The disturbance emanating from the east Asian
jet will act to tilt the upper trough negatively, allowing the jet
to buckle and pick up several disturbances currently in the mid-
latitudes. The main threat for this flow pattern will be high
winds across the southwest mainland, and models have some
discrepancy on what the top-end will be for the event.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The front that brought the snow and rain to the Cook Inlet and
Susitna Valley regions Tuesday has moved eastward and is nearing
the Alcan border this morning. A short wave will move over
Southcentral this morning and into the Copper River Basin by this
evening. This will bring some isolated-to-scattered snow showers
to the region but not much in any additional snow accumulations.
As skies clear from west to east this afternoon through overnight
it will allow some fog to develop in the northern Cook Inlet area
as well as the Copper River Basin. There is a chance the fog will
persist well into the day tomorrow under a ridge aloft that will
build over the Copper River Basin.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...
Snow showers will continue passing over the area today for most
of the Southwest as a weak shortwave trough passes overhead. These
showers have been somewhat intense at times overnight,
temporarily reducing visibility's to one mile or so with light
accumulations. This is expected to continue for most of the
morning before ending by this afternoon. Also beginning this
afternoon, strong southwesterly winds will develop especially
along the Kuskokwim Delta coast as a storm force front moves
through the Central-Eastern Bering. The biggest concern from this
will not come from the strong winds, but with the potential for
high surf along Kuskokwim Bay as a long fetch of gale-storm force
winds will be pointed directly into the south-southwest exposed
areas of the Bay. Fortunately, the tides today are not expected to
be very high, but the storm surge still has the potential to
bring water levels as high as 3 ft above the highest tide,
especially during the afternoon-evening hours.

The active weather pattern will then continue into Thursday as a
strong North Pacific low will move into the area Thursday
afternoon into Friday. The models are in very good agreement that
this low will bring at least strong, to potentially high winds,
to much of Bristol Bay. Of particular concern will be with winds to
the gap and downslope wind prone areas in Eastern Bristol Bay and
along the AK pen, however there is good confidence that this low
will bring at least strong winds into interior and Western
Bristol Bay as well through Friday. Confidence then begins to
break down a bit towards the weekend with the placement of a
secondary low that could develop just south of the AK pen, but
there is the potential that this low could bring a prolonged
period of strong/gusty winds to Bristol Bay and the Kuskokwim
Delta into Saturday with temperatures rising well above freezing.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...
Gale-storm force winds with widespread rains will continue to
impact the region for the next few days. This will be the result
of a continued very active weather pattern over the Bering as the
storm force low currently moving into the Central Bering today
will begin to slowly weaken on Thursday, then be re-invigorated by
an approaching storm force North Pacific low late Thursday. This
will shift the most active weather further east into the Bering
for late in the work week.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Thursday through Tuesday)...
Starting Thursday, a ridge of high pressure will be firmly in
place over the mainland, which will change the track of the low
pressure systems traversing the forecast area. Instead of moving
in from the west, the next two low pressure systems will approach
from the south and bring a lot more moisture, which will cause
heavy precipitation along the North Pacific coast, including the
oceanward side of the Kenai Peninsula. The first weather concern
is for southwest Alaska on Thursday and Friday, as the approaching
low will bring a strong low level jet and very tight gradient
over the Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay area. This has the
potential for warning level winds over the northern AK Pen and
inland Bristol Bay, so we have issued a high wind watch for those
areas. Temperatures all along the west coast will be very warm, so
snow will eventually turn over to rain as far north as the
Kuskokwim Delta.

The precipitation pushing onshore will be mostly rain for the
Kodiak area and the southern portion of the Kenai Peninsula, but
there are some interesting developments further northward. Models
have been hanging on to a pocket of cold air over Southcentral for
several days now, making precip type particularly challenging in
this area. Behind this low is some significant cold air, which
brings a chance for snow for all portions of the forecast area
before Christmas Day. Either way, the forecast looks to be messy
for the weekend before a return to more seasonable weather early
next week.
