Not much for changes expected to the forecast up through 00Z this
evening. Only adjustment was to increase sky cover slightly today
as a thick stream of cirrus moves southeast over central SD.
Otherwise, winds will be tolerable with highs rising into the 60s
and low 70s. An elevated fire danger will be present across
central SD as humidity drops into the 20s this afternoon, but
again, winds should be held in check, thus preventing headlines
for fire weather.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday Afternoon)

A weak low pressure system diving southeastward across Minnesota
this morning will bring warm temperatures into the CWA. Several
locations this morning are reporting temps in the upper 40s to the
lower 50s. Breezy conditions this morning will give way to light
winds this afternoon. It will be perfect day for yard work as the
bottom will drop out by Thursday morning.

Models have been very consistent with bringing a strong area of low
pressure across the region Thursday through Friday. This system will
bring very strong northerly winds along with much colder
temperatures. The combination of buffer soundings and half km winds
off the GFS and NAM, have decided to issue a high wind watch for
northeastern SD and western MN. This area will have the best
potential of seeing peak gusts of 55 mph. Highlighted winds
through Thursday evening, even though advisory level winds are
likely through Friday afternoon, especially in the eastern half of
the CWA.

With strong CAA, believe most of the pcpn with this event will fall
as all snow. Temperatures on Thursday should feature a
non-diurnal trend especially in the eastern CWA where temps begin
in the mid to upper 40s before dropping into the upper 30s by the
afternoon. A TROWAL over the far eastern portion of the CWA could
produce accumulating snowfall, assuming one can measure it,
Thursday night through Friday. Models have pushed the heaviest
snowfall a bit further east into MN. While blowing snow is
possible, will hold off on mention it for now as confidence in
snow accums is low.

.LONG TERM...(Friday Evening through Tuesday)

Dry and colder than average conditions are in store for the
extended. The period will be active with a series of cold fronts and
arctic highs following one another. Ahead of the lows, temperatures
will bump up to near normal with a couple of days of forecast highs
in the 50s. However, the arctic highs will drag the cold air back
in and highs will mostly be in the 40s through the middle of next
week. No widespread precip is expected with the lows until
perhaps Tues night/Wed, but any amounts would be very light.

VFR conditions will prevail today and through the overnight hours.
Strong northwest winds will develop across central SD early
Thursday morning and spread east through the remainder of the

wind shear will also develop for a time during the overnight hours
and have included that in the TAF forecast. MVFR CIGs will move
into the region late Thursday morning and into the afternoon
hours.
