So, today is the last day of mild temperatures. 925mb temperatures
are still quite warm, around +7C. Mixing to the surface yields
highs in the 40s and 50s, despite a southeast component and
increasing high clouds. Main focus will be on an upper trough
crossing the Rockies today, and ejecting into the plains
tonight/early Monday. We are seeing some good 00Z/12Z run to run
continuity with deterministic guidance, so confidence has
increased. Mixed winds (mid 50kts), gradient (20mb across the
state), and pressure rises (peak around 15mb/6hrs) continues to
support wind gusts close to 60mph. We continue to see evidence for
a banded/trowal type feature as this low wraps up across the
area, and forecast timing/intensity attempts to consolidate the
ARX/NMM and 00Z NAMNest outcomes, which are fairly close in
evolution. Should be fairly transitory at least, but given the
winds under this feature, expect zero visibility when it is
snowing. Given bare ground across the area, it can likewise be
expected that visibility will be generally unaffected outside of
this area of intense snowfall though there may be pockets of
lighter snow to contend with. And we are taking about an
intense/heavy snowfall band as GFS still shows a peak of 40
microbars of lift in the 600-700mb layer around 21Z across the
northeast. Decided on a winter storm watch for blizzard conditions
where confidence is highest, but will also likely need some sort
of winter weather or high wind headlines for other parts of the
CWA.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Saturday)

Not much has changed with the models with the large scale flow over
the region through the long term. A large upper level low pressure
trough is expected across the eastern U.S. through the long term
with a western U.S. high pressure ridge. Therefore, deep cold
northerly flow is expected through the period with several short
wave troughs/clipper systems dropping across the region. With the
new snow cover across the region and to our north, temperatures will
be colder than normal through the period mainly in the 20s and lower
30s. Upper teens are expected across the east on Tuesday. The models
do show some rising 50h heights on Saturday as surface winds become
southwest. Although with the snow cover and poor mixing, dont expect
temperatures to be affected much.
