  homes on the east and west banks of the Choctawatchee River near

.Near Term [Through Today]...

A large and powerful low pressure system impacting the Mid-
Atlantic and parts of New England with heavy snow, is responsible
for the strong gradient winds and gusts across the Tri-State
region this morning. While gusty winds are expected through the
day, they will be at their strongest this morning. Some common
numbers across the region range from 15 to 20 mph sustained and
up to 25 to 35 mph gusts. Expect gusts to settle into the 20 to 25
mph range later this morning.

As far as temperatures are concerned, it appears as though the
latest run of the GFS is handling the -3 to -4 standard deviation
850 mb temps best this morning. Though we may not mix as deep as
850 today, based on the morning sounding the GFS has a great
handling on temps throughout the lower trop. In addition to the
mixing component to afternoon highs, it appears as though low
clouds will hang in a bit longer than first anticipated. This
means a lot less solar insolation to counter the anomalous low-
layer temps. Thus, have trended downwards with afternoon high
temps, leaning on a blend of the GFS and RAP. This results in
highs ranging from around 40 degrees across southeast Alabama and
parts of southwest Georgia, up to only the mid/upper 40s in the
southeast Big Bend of Florida. Add in the breezy conditions and
apparent temperatures will range from around 30 degrees (NW) to
around 40 degrees (SW), at the warmest time of day!

.Aviation...
[Through 12Z Sunday]...

MVFR ceilings will gradually erode from southwest to northeast
through the afternoon, with ABY and VLD last to clear late this
afternoon. Expect the cloud deck to be fairly consistently MVFR,
though patches of just barely VFR will be possible as well. Gusty
winds between 25 to 30 knots this morning will subside to 20 to 25
knots later this afternoon, and then eventually below 20 knots
near sunset. Once the low clouds clear, VFR is expected through
the remainder of the TAF.

.Prev Discussion [443 AM EST]...

.Short Term [Tonight Through Monday]...

The main story of the short term period will be two consecutive
freezes, with the one tonight more likely with colder temperatures
and a longer duration. By 12Z Sunday morning, models generally
place the surface ridge west of our area from New Orleans to
Nashville, which will leave us in an (albeit weakening) pressure
gradient. As such, many locations may still see some winds
persisting through the night, and it may be difficult for the
boundary layer to totally decouple. We trended towards a broad
based blend, which still yields widespread lows in the 26-29
degree range, with 30-32 degree lows closer to the coast. Most
spots should experience freeze durations of 5-11 hours.

On Sunday Night, the freeze is a little less certain. The winds
may be a little weaker, but warm air advection will be beginning
as the surface ridge axis shifts just east of the area. For now,
lows are generally 30-32 over non-coastal parts of the area.

.Long Term [Monday Night Through Saturday]...

In the long term, models show a cold front approaching the area
mid-week, followed by a low developing in the Gulf and ejecting
northeast toward our area on Thursday. This will bring increased
chances of rain to the area. As of right now, we did not include
any thunderstorms in the forecast as the operational GFS and ECMWF
track the surface low south of the area - meaning the atmosphere
should be more stable in our area.

.Marine...

Strong winds with frequent gale force gusts have been observed
most of the night at the buoys about 60-70 NM offshore, along with
some 15 foot seas. We maintained the Gale Warning until 21Z for
all legs of the coastal waters, and seas were nudged up slightly
to account for the observations. We then added a Small Craft
Advisory after 21Z and into tonight as the seas may take some time
to subside below SCA criteria. After that, calmer conditions are
expected for the next several days.

.Fire Weather...

Gusty winds and high dispersion values would be a concern should a
wildfire develop today. Fortunately, along with colder than
normal temperatures, minimum RH values and available fuel
moisture will be above critical levels. There are no other fire
weather concerns at least through the middle of next week.

.Hydrology...

Minor flooding is forecast on the lower Choctawhatchee and
Apalachicola Rivers due to recent rainfall. A Flood Warning is
already in effect for the Apalachicola River near Blountstown, and
warnings will likely be required for the Choctawhatchee River
near Caryville and Bruce today. Otherwise no flooding is expected
and dry weather is expected for the next several days.
