Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 522 AM AKDT SAT SEP 10 2016 .DISCUSSION... Current model runs are in good agreement out through 84 hours over northern Alaska and nearby areas. Upper Air... A ridge extending from the southeast Bering Sea across the Alaska Peninsula and southeastward will build and move northeastward, with the axis extending from the Alcan border southward along 140W by Sunday afternoon. The ridge will move into northwest Canada by Tuesday, with the axis tipping slightly northeastward. Moderately strong southwest flow will develop across the Alaska Range by Sunday evening, then decrease late Monday morning through Monday afternoon. An upper trough will develop over the Chukchi Sea and the northern Bering Sea Sunday evening, then deepen as it moves eastward across the northern Alaska mainland through Tuesday. The trough will bring cooler temperatures aloft to northern Alaska, with 850 mb temperatures falling to -5 to -10 degrees Celsius over much of the area by Tuesday. Over the high Arctic, a deep upper low centered 600 nm north of the Nicholson Peninsula will move to northern Banks Island by noon Monday. Surface... A weak high pressure ridge extending west to east across the Beaufort Sea will slowly weaken as it moves southward to the Arctic coast by midnight tonight. A weak low pressure trough along the Arctic coast will move southward into the interior Arctic slope and weaken by this evening. A weakening occluded front will push northwestward into the southwestern mainland Monday. A weak 998 mb low will develop near Kuskokwim Bay Sunday afternoon, then deepen to a 996 mb low centered over the upper Koyukuk valley by Monday afternoon. A narrow ridge will develop along the north Gulf coast Sunday afternoon, then weaken by Monday. The pressure gradient between this ridge and lower pressure to the north of the Alaska Range will produce gusty south winds through Alaska Range passes. Arctic Slope and Brooks Range... Snow amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected today through Sunday at higher elevations in the Brooks Range. Snow amounts of mainly 1 to 2 inches through Sunday are expected in most coastal areas from Wainwright eastward. Additional snow amounts of up to 6 inches will be possible in the central and eastern Brooks Range Sunday night and Monday as the upper trough moves in from the west, with the western Brooks Range seeing smaller amounts. West coast and western interior... Little or no precipitation is expected through tonight. Rain will spread northward Sunday, with rain likely over most areas Sunday night through Tuesday. Central and eastern interior... One last day of sunny weather is expected today. Clouds will increase Sunday morning as the building upper ridge brings in high clouds from the south. An increasing chance of rain Sunday afternoon and Sunday night as the upper trough approaches from the west, with rain likely most areas Monday through Tuesday. Cooler temperatures expected Tuesday through Thursday with high temperatures making it only into the mid to upper 40s. Southerly gap winds 15 to 25 mph will develop in Alaska Range passes tonight, gradually increasing through Sunday evening with strong and gusty winds continuing through mid day Monday. Gusts to 50 mph are expected in and near Windy Pass Sunday night through Monday morning. Gusts to 60 mph will be possible in areas along and near the Richardson Highway through the Alaska Range Sunday during' the same time period. Areas along the Alaska Highway between Dot lake and Tok may see experience winds gusting to 25 to 35 mph Sunday night through Monday morning.
