NWS Spokane, WA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this river flood warning went out at Feb 10, 2:51 PM PST, 1 hour 5 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Feb 10, 2:51 PM PST, 1 hour 5 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Spokane WA 251 PM PST TUE FEB 10 2015 .SYNOPSIS... Dry and mild weather is expected over the majority of the Inland Northwest for the next several days. A weak weather system Wednesday night and Thursday will bring the potential for additional light rain in the Cascades and near the Canadian border. A few record highs may be possible Friday and Saturday. Temperatures should gradually decrease closer to average by early next week. && .DISCUSSION... Tonight: There is not much left of the trough that produced days of rain and record warm temperatures. As of 230 PM, the remnants of the wet weekend trough was shearing apart over Montana and Wyoming. Radar continued to detect some weak rain showers over the southern Idaho Panhandle, but those have been on the decrease this afternoon. That weakening trend will continue this evening a upper level high pressure amplifies over the Pacific Northwest. The left over low level air mass is mild and moist. Surface dewpoints are in the lower to mid 40s from the Lower Columbia Basin into north Idaho. The residual moisture will allow for areas of low clouds and fog to develop and expand tonight. There should be enough low level easterly wind over the southern Idaho Panhandle and Palouse to bring clearing to places like Pullman, Colfax and Pomeroy. Along and north of the I-90 Corridor will be vulnerable to low clouds and fog which may linger into Wednesday. Wednesday: The presence of clouds and fog will make all the difference in the forecast for tomorrow. As upper level high pressure amplifies overhead we will transition to a low level easterly wind. This time of year that favors clearing over the Palouse and southern Idaho while fog and low clouds stack up against the Cascades. The unusually warm resident air mass and warm ground temperatures may negate some of our climatological tendencies for fog and low clouds. It is possible that Spokane, Sandpoint, Moses Lake, Wenatchee, and Omak experience some degree of clearing tomorrow. Spots that get several hours of sunshine will be mild with temperatures in the 50s...possibly low 60s south of Pullman. /GKoch Thursday through Tuesday...There is general model agreement of a flat ridge over the Inland Northwest Thursday through Saturday with a couple weak weather disturbances clipping the area. Then a cooler but mostly dry weather pattern is expected for early next week. Now for the details... Thursday: A weak system will move up from the southwest clipping northern Washington and the north Idaho Panhandle. This may bring spotty light rain to the East Slopes of the Cascades and northern mountains with snow levels around 6000 feet. Main effect from this wave will be a thick shield of mid level clouds which will keep temperatures from reaching their full potential. A moist boundary layer over the northern valleys will also result in areas of low clouds around Omak, Colville, and Sandpoint. Friday: The ridge amplifies for dry conditions with a very mild air mass over the area as 850mb temps warm to 5C near the Canadian border to 10C near the WA/OR border. The boundary layer remains moist for the Cascade and northern valleys...which may high temps in the mid or upper 40s. Elsewhere however indications is that fog and stratus will be limited and this could allow for some near record high temperatures despite limited wind and mixing potential due to a higher mid-February sun angle to warm up the lower atmosphere. Saturday: Models have trended further south with the next wave that is now progged to track into northern Washington/north Idaho. Prior runs from yesterday tracked this wave north of the region. For now POP's have been increased to 20-30% across the northern valleys/mountains and Idaho Panhandle...but if models continue to show this further south track further increases in POP's may be needed. Precipitation amounts look light. The timing of this wave coming through in the early-mid morning and dry air aloft coming in behind this wave and 850mb winds out the northwest at 15-25 kts may allow for a better mixing day across the area with very mild temperatures in the valleys...while a cooling trend begins in the mountains as 850mb temps fall to 1-4C. Several areas are currently forecast to have near record temps. Sunday/Monday: The ridge amplifies off the coast allowing a cooler but generally dry northerly flow with the shower threat confined mainly to the Idaho Panhandle. There is a lot of model variability regarding how much cooler air makes it in...but most guidance keeps the arctic air east of our area with 850mb temps only dropping into the -4 to 0C range. This would result in a gradual cool down especially overnight lows where drier air will allow for more efficient radiational cooling. Tuesday: The latest GFS keeps a continuation of dry northerly flow while the ECMWF breaks down the offshore ridge allowing a system to spread light precipitation across the area. The UKMET, GEM, and prior 00z ECMWF model run support more of a GFS solution so this idea is preferred at this time. JW && .AVIATION... 18Z TAFS: Our surface winds have decreased region-wide this morning. The decrease in low level mixing has allowed a ragged deck of low clouds and fog to form in the southwest upslope regions of eastern Washington and north Idaho. Spokane, Coeur D'Alene, and Pullman look to be stuck in a cloud deck below 1500 feet today. The development of east winds tonight may be enough to break Pullman out of the clouds overnight, but the wind fields may be marginal. Our optimistic TAF for Pullman may need adjustments later as we get a handle on how widespread the stratus bank becomes this afternoon. /GKoch && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
