Area Forecast Discussion NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LINCOLN IL 841 PM CDT Mon Mar 9 2015 .UPDATE... ISSUED AT 841 PM CDT MON MAR 9 2015 Low pressure and an upper level shortwave over northeast TX continue to rapidly lift northeastward this evening with precipitation in deeply saturated warm advection ahead of this feature approaching the southern tip of IL. Models are fairly well on track with this system although perhaps just slightly fast based on precipitation reports. From around 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. approximately the southeastern half of the central IL forecast area is targeted with precipitation, up to a few tenths from Olney to Lawrenceville, with lighter amounts to around the I-72 corridor. After 8 a.m., precipitation begins to shift off to the east lingering in southeast IL through afternoon. Meanwhile, mostly light fog has spread through most of central IL west to around the Illinois River, although patchy dense fog has been reported around the Champaign area. Minor updates this evening may be needed for extent of fog and onset of precipitation, but so far the current forecast package looks approximately on track. && .SHORT TERM...(Tonight) ISSUED AT 301 PM CDT MON MAR 9 2015 Low pressure currently over south Texas will begin to lift northeastward tonight, reaching the Arkansas/Louisiana border by 12z Tue. Rain associated with this feature will spread northward as well, although it will be encountering a rather dry mid-level environment further north across the Midwest/Ohio River Valley. As a result, think precip will hold off until after midnight, with light rain perhaps reaching as far north as the I-72 corridor by dawn. Best rain chances will remain further south, where likely PoPs are warranted across the far SE KILX CWA overnight. Another short-term forecast issue will be potential fog development. A persistent area of clouds and reduced visbys has been in place all day across southeast Illinois, with 19z/2pm satellite imagery showing the leading edge of the clouds just south of a Springfield to Danville line. As this very moist airmass spreads further north, think fog will develop across nearly the entire area after sunset. One exception may be along/west of the Illinois River due to the more northward trajectory of the moisture. With increasing mid/high clouds overnight, do not think this is a particularly good set up for widespread dense fog. Will therefore only carry patchy fog mention tonight. && .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Monday) ISSUED AT 301 PM CDT MON MAR 9 2015 Deep trof over the central US will continue to be the trigger for a couple of waves that will lift out of the southern Miss valley and lift into the OH valley over the next 7 days. The first wave will be ongoing and continue to spread pcpn across the southern half of the CWA, roughly south of I-72. Precip will begin to push east and southeast during the afternoon hours, so by tomorrow night, all pcpn will be out of the CWA. In-between the waves, dry and above normal temps are expected for Wed and Thur. The next wave will begin to effect the southeast parts of the CWA Thursday afternoon and then continue northward through the rest of the CWA for Thursday night through Friday night. The models differ on the onset of the pcpn Thursday and how long the pcpn will effect the area. The GFS is the slowest with the onset and hangs onto it longer than the other models. Consensus is to lean toward the ECMWF for now, given it being more consistent. Temps will remain warm, at normal or above normal. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening) ISSUED AT 556 PM CDT MON MAR 9 2015 Surface observations showing IFR ceilings and MVFR visibilities in fog from KSPI-KBMI southward to K1H2 to KPRG...and MVFR cigs to the south, and this pattern shifting northward. As mid and high cloud spreads across the area, fog has been dissipating slightly, and expect this to continue overnight preventing dense fog from forming. As a result, continuing to carry mainly IFR visibilities in TAFS overnight. Low pressure currently over E Texas will continue to lift northward overnight spreading showers into southern IL. Some of these could reach KSPI-KDEC-KCMI and have included VCSH in TAFs starting at 15Z although impact on cigs/vsby likely to be very little as only light amounts expected if any.
