AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TOPEKA KS 635 AM CDT Sat Aug 3 2013 .SHORT TERM...(Today AND Tonight) ISSUED 337 AM CDT SAT AUG 3 2013 Showers and thunderstorms were confined to south of Interstate 35 and also along an outflow boundary over Northeast Kansas at 08Z. Profilers show low level jet out of the southwest 25 to 35 kts with a convergence area over near and south of Interstate 70. Precipitable water values continue to hover around 2 inches across East Central Kansas as well. Frontal boundary in far southern Kansas may drift slowly north today. Also residual boundaries from this mornings convection, a very humid airmass and ML CAPE increasing to around 1000 to 2000 J/kg this afternoon. Will keep a chance of thunderstorms today across much of the CWA. Temperatures today will mainly be in the mid to upper 80s. Tonight showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible through the evening hours with increasing chances after midnight. Evening convection may fire along any boundaries and may be slow moving and produce heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms moving out of western Kansas later tonight may move into North Central and East Central Kansas after midnight. Moisture advection will increase across Central Kansas overnight as models show increasing moisture transport vectors. 850 mb to 300 mb thickness and Corfidi vectors from the GFS would suggest that storms moving into central and North Central Kansas will move south southeast after 09Z. Will keep likely to categorical wording across North Central and East Central Kansas after midnight. With precipitable water values remaining high and moisture transport will see chances for locally heavy rainfall and and additional flooding. .LONG TERM...(Sunday THROUGH Friday) ISSUED AT 337 AM CDT SAT AUG 3 2013 MCS likely ongoing to start Sunday with low level jet feeding the system through at least midday. Additional development possible after MCS exits with southwest winds over any lingering outflows. Better isentropic lift should be over the southeastern zones Sunday night with 850 mb flow beginning to respond to upper low making slow southward progress out of southern Canada. Monday may be one of the drier periods of the midterm periods but surface front should resharpen over the western Nebraska by late day with another convective complex possibly coming southeast into the Central Plains Monday night into Tuesday. Cold front associated with the Canadian low should come through around late Tuesday night and sink south to near Oklahoma by Thursday morning. Just how far the front gets remains in question and at least small precip chances will persist through the late week periods. Main concern with the storms with continue to be excessive rainfall with precipitable water values in the 2 inch range and many areas of saturated soils from recent events. Too little confidence in placement and amounts for any watch at this time however. Temperatures should remain tempered by periodic precipitation and the cold front's passage with Monday and Tuesday looking the warmest at this point with near normal levels. && .AVIATION...(FOR THE 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning) ISSUED AT 635 AM CDT SAT AUG 3 2013 A few hours of MVFR cigs are expected at the terminals through 16Z. Some developing showers near TOP and FOE and have mentioned some VCSH. Outside of any convection VFR conditions will be found. Winds will remain out of the northeast to east through the period at speeds of less than 10 kts. Some TSRA is possible with the most likely time being after 07Z Sun and added VCTS.
