NORTHERN ARIZONA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ
900 AM MST TUE SEP 04 2001

.SYNOPSIS...LINGERING MOISTURE WILL BRING ONE MORE DAY OF ISOLATED
SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY TO NORTHERN AND EASTERN ARIZONA
TODAY. BY WEDNESDAY...A STRONG DRYING TREND WILL SET IN WITH NO
PRECIPITATION EXPECTED THROUGH THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES WILL
REMAIN NEAR NORMAL...WITH A SLIGHT COOLING TREND BEGINNING THURSDAY.

.DISCUSSION...MID-LEVEL ANTICYCLONIC CIRCULATION REMAINS OVER
NORTHWEST MEXICO THIS MORNING WITH A SHORT-WAVE TROUGH EXITING
CALIFORNIA AND BRUSHING NORTHERN ARIZONA. THE BOUNDARY LAYER HAS
DRIED OVER THE PAST 24-HOURS BUT ENOUGH MOISTURE WILL REMAIN FOR
ISOLATED ACTIVITY FROM FLAGSTAFF NORTH AND EAST. STRONGER MID-LEVEL
SHEAR WILL DEVELOP DURING THE DAY AND WITH DRY AIR IN THE MID-LEVELS
BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE WILL MIX OUT FURTHER. IN FACT...WITH STRONG
MID-LEVEL SHEAR AND FAIRLY LOW CAPE ANY STORMS WILL BE EXTREMELY
ISOLATED. THE MODEL SOLUTIONS HAVE CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE
PAST 24-HOURS WITH A TROUGH INSTEAD OF A RIDGE ALONG THE WEST COAST.
AS A RESULT...BY WEDNESDAY...A TROUGH APPROACHES THE PACIFIC
NORTHWEST. AHEAD OF THE TROUGH AXIS HIGH CLOUDS WILL STREAM INTO
NORTHERN ARIZONA AND WITH SOUTHERLY WIND TRAJECTORIES MID-LEVEL
TEMPERATURES WILL WARM SOME. THIS SHOULD PUT AN END TO ANY
THUNDERSTORMS. TEMPERATURES SHOULD REMAIN STEADY THE NEXT TWO DAYS
WITH AFTERNOON SOUTHWEST WINDS OF 5 TO 20 MPH AS NEAR SURFACE
PRESSURE GRADIENTS STRENGTHEN. EVEN DRIER AIR MOVES INTO ARIZONA
BEYOND WEDNESDAY FOR DRY CONDITIONS AND SOMEWHAT COOLER
TEMPERATURES.

MCCOLLUM

.FGZ...NONE.
