Area forecast discussion, Aug 14, 2:30 PM MST, 3 hours 31 minutes before
SOUTHEAST ARIZONA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TUCSON AZ 230 PM MST MON AUG 14 2000 SYNOPSIS...HIGH PRESSURE WILL REMAIN NORTH OF THE AREA...KEEPING A MONSOONAL FLOW OVER SOUTHEAST ARIZONA. DRIER AIR MOVING IN FROM NEW MEXICO WILL KEEP THE STORMS MAINLY CONFINED TO HIGHER TERRAIN INTO WEDNESDAY. A TROPICAL STORM DEVELOPING NEAR THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF MEXICO AND A TROPICAL DEPRESSION OVER THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO... COULD BRING SIGNIFICANT MOISTURE INTO THE THE AREA BY LATE WEEK. DISCUSSION...DRIER AIR HAS MOVED IN FROM THE EAST ACROSS A LARGE CHUNK OF THE CWA. 12Z KTUS SOUNDING INDICATES LESS THAN ONE INCH OF PW THIS MORNING...WHICH MATCHES UP WELL WITH GOES SATELLITE IMAGERY. PW VALUES OVER 1 INCH CAN STILL BE FOUND TO THE WEST OF TUCSON OVER THE LOWER DESERTS. THE DRIER AIR WILL LIMIT THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT TO MAINLY THE HIGHER TERRAIN. HOWEVER...WILL HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON WEAK S/W OVER SOUTHERN N MEXICO...TO SEE IF THIS INCREASES ACTIVITY OVER EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE CWA LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. KTUS SOUNDING DOES SHOW THE INCREASED POTENTIAL FOR DRY MICROBURSTS AND STRONG GUSTY WINDS WITH ANY STORMS THAT DO DEVELOP DUE TO LARGE INVERTED-V PROFILE. MODELS ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH MOISTENING US BACK UP AND FROM THE SOUTH/SOUTHEAST DURING THE DAY WEDNESDAY...WITH RH CROSS SECTIONS AND PW PROGS SHOWING VALUES OF OVER ONE INCH RETURNING TO THE AREA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. AT THE SAME TIME...A SERIES OF DISTURBANCES WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA LATE WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. THIS SCENARIO WILL BRING INCREASING PRECIPITATION CHANCES STARTING WEDNESDAY AND CONTINUING INTO THE EXTENDED PERIOD. OTHERWISE...ISOLATED ACTIVITY CAN BE EXPECTED MAINLY OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN...THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING. TEMPERATURES WILL BE ABOUT 5 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL THE NEXT TWO DAYS...WITH FWC VALUES LOOKING IN THE BALLPARK. ON THE EXTENDED...WILL CONTINUE TREND OF SCATTERED AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS...AS MONSOONAL MOISTURE CONTINUES TO FEED IN ACROSS THE AREA AND THE DISTURBANCE OVER THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO IS EXPECTED TO MOVE NORTHWEST INTO THE REGION. ZELL .TWC...NONE.
