SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
10 AM MST SUN AUG 27 2000

.SYNOPSIS...
A MOIST SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST FLOW OF AIR WILL CONTINUE ACROSS SOUTHWEST
ARIZONA AND FAR SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. HIGH
PRESSURE ALOFT CENTERED TO THE EAST OF ARIZONA WILL KEEP THIS FLOW IN
PLACE. AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION ON MONDAY
FOR SOME ENHANCEMENT OF THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY BY THEN. MEANWHILE...
A STRONG UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE AREA WILL BE DEVELOPING THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS OFF THE WEST COAST. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY BRING A STRONG
DRYING TREND TO ALL OF THE FORECAST AREA BY THE END OF THIS WEEK.

.DISCUSSION...
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY IN OUR CWA WHICH BEGAN BETWEEN 3 AND 4 AM IS
STILL ONGOING...MAINLY OVER AZ ZONES. ODDLY ENOUGH...IT DEVELOPED
RIGHT OVER OUR CWA INSTEAD OF ADVECTING IN FROM ELSEWHERE. DIFFICULT
TO SEE A CAUSATIVE MECHANISM IN THE SATELLITE DATA. IN THE 12Z PLOT
DATA...THERE IS LITTLE IF ANY SPEED DIVERGENCE OR DIFFLUENCE AT 300
AND 250 MB. MID LEVEL TEMPS ARE MODESTLY COOL YET NO COOLER THAN
YESTERDAY. BUT...AT 500 MB A WAVE IS APPARENT OVER SOUTHERN ARIZONA.
ITS ROTATING AROUND THE HIGH CENTERED OVER THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. 24 HR
RAOB TRENDS IN AND AROUND ARIZONA SHOW THE WIND FIELDS HAVE
BACKED...MOST LIKELY DUE TO THIS DISTURBANCE. OTHERWISE THE
TEMPERATURE PROFILES HAVENT CHANGED MUCH...EXCEPT FOR SOME SLIGHT
COOLING...MAINLY IN THE LOW LEVELS. MOISTURE PROFILES HAVE
CHANGED...ESPECIALLY AT FGZ WHICH HAD A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. TUS
INCREASE DUE MOSTLY TO MID CLOUDS. YUM HAD MOISTURE INCREASE BETWEEN
850 AND 600 MB...BUT DRYING BELOW 850 MB.

MODELS SLOWLY MOVE THE WAVE NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD TODAY AND TONIGHT.
ETA HOWEVER BRINGS ANOTHER ONE RIGHT ON ITS HEELS FOR MONDAY AND
CONTINUES THE STREAM FOR TUESDAY. AVN WAITS UNTIL MONDAY
NIGHT/TUESDAY BEFORE BRINGING ANOTHER DISTURBANCE THROUGH. IT APPEARS
THAT THE MODELS ARE TRYING TO STRIP ENERGY OFF OF THE CYCLONIC
CIRCULATION ALONG BAJA AS THE EASTERN PACIFIC UPPER LOW NUDGES
EASTWARD...IN EFFECT PULLING IT BIT BY BIT INTO THE SOUTHWESTERLY
FLOW. MEAN RH PROGS INDICATE THAT MOISTURE WILL BE AROUND THROUGH
TUESDAY NIGHT. THUS COULD BE QUITE ACTIVE NEXT 72 HOURS.
