000 TTAA00 KNYC 241223 FFWNYC CTC007-009-011-241915- BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED FLOOD WARNING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 725 AM EST SAT JAN 24 1998 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NEW YORK HAS EXTENTED AND EXPANDED THE FLOOD WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 215 PM EST FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS... IN SOUTH CENTRAL CONNECTICUT ...MIDDLESEX COUNTY...NEW HAVEN COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST CONNECTICUT ...NEW LONDON COUNTY HEAVY RAIN OVERNIGHT OF 2 1/2 TO 3 1/2 INCHES HAS CAUSED NUMEROUS SMALL STREAMS TO OVERFLOW THEIR BANKS AS WELL AS WIDESPREAD PONDING OF WATER AND STREET FLOODING. THE WEPAWAUG RIVER IN MILFORD HAS RISEN 2 FEET ABOVE FLOOD STAGE PRODUCING MINOR FLOODING. THE RIVER HAS BEEN HOLDING STEADY THE PAST FEW HOURS AND IS NEARING ITS CREST. THE QUINNIPIAC RIVER IN WALLINGFORD HAS RISEN 2 1/2 FEET ABOVE FLOOD STAGE CAUSING MINOR FLOODING ALONG THE RIVER REACH. IN NEW LONDON COUNTY...THE YANTIC RIVER CONTINUES TO RISE. AT 7 AM THE RIVER LEVEL WAS AT 8.2 FEET. FLOOD STAGE IS 8 FEET. MINOR FLOODING WILL BEGIN IN THE MEADOWS IN YANTIC FLATS WHEN THE RIVER REACHES 8 1/2 FEET. THE RIVER IS EXPECTED TO CREST LATER THIS MORNING 1 TO 1 1/2 FEET ABOVE FLOOD STAGE. THE RAIN HAS ENDED ACROSS CONNECTICUT THIS MORNING. MOST SMALL RIVERS AND STREAMS WILL BE OR ARE ALREADY APPROACHING THEIR CREST...HOWEVER THERE IS ALOT OF PONDING WATER...FLOODED ROADS ...AND SWOLLEN STREAMS IN THE WARNING AREA. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY. VEHICLES CAUGHT IN RISING WATER SHOULD BE ABANDONED QUICKLY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND. MCKILLOP WFO BROOKHADVEN
