000 TTAA00 KMOB 211210 FFWMOB ALC023-211515- BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED FLASH FLOOD WARNING NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOBILE AL 709 AM CDT MON JUL 21 1997 THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOBILE HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WARNING EFFECTIVE UNTIL 1015 AM CDT FOR PEOPLE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATION... IN SOUTHWEST ALABAMA ...CHOCTAW COUNTY AT 700 AM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR IN MOBILE INDICATED PERSISTENT HEAVY RAINFALL OVER CENTRAL CHOCTAW COUNTY. THIS RAIN AREA...WHICH IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF DANNY...HAS BEEN INCREASING IN INTENSITY OVER THE PAST SEVERAL HOURS WHILE MOVING VERY LITTLE. RADAR ESTIMATES THAT HOURLY RAINFALL RATES ARE APPROACHING 2 INCHES...AND THREE HOURLY AMOUNTS ARE APPROACHING 3 INCHES. MOST OF THE RAIN WAS FALLING SOUTH OF THE TOWN OF BUTLER...AROUND THE GILBERTOWN...BARRYTOWN AND BOLINGER AREAS. LOCAL OFFICIALS REPORT NUMEROUS AREA STREAMS WERE RISING RAPIDLY...BUT WERE NOT YET OUT OR THEIR BANKS. HOWEVER...THE HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CONTINUE OVER THE AREA FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS AND FLASH FLOODING WILL LIKELY OCCUR ACROSS SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE COUNTY THIS MORNING. MOST DEATHS IN FLASH FLOODING OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS BRIDGES...DIPS...OR LOW SPOTS IF WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. NEVER TRY TO CROSS A FLOWING STREAM...EVEN A SMALL ONE...ON FOOT. A FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT. IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE RELATIVE TO STREAMS~...RIVERS...OR CREEKS WHICH CAN BECOME KILLERS IN HEAVY RAINS. CAMPERS SHOULD AVOID CAMPING ALONG STREAMS OR CREEKS DURING THREATENING RAINS.
