FLASH FLOOD WARNING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CLEVELAND OH
730 AM EST THU JAN 18 1996

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CLEVELAND HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD
WARNING UNTIL 12 NOON EST FOR PEOPLE IN

ERIE COUNTY OHIO.

ICE JAM FLOODING HAS DEVELOPED ON THE VERMILION RIVER AT VERMILION.
ACCORDING TO THE VERMILION POLICE DEPARTMENT AN ICE JAM HAS DEVELOPED
CLOSE TO THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER AND IS BACKING WATER UPSTREAM. FLOODING
WAS OCCURRING IN THE LAGOONS AREA.

WARM WEATHER OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS HAS CAUSED A LOT OF SNOW MELT THAT
HAS BEEN DRAINING INTO THE CREEKS AND RIVERS OVER NORTHERN OHIO. ICE
BREAKING UP ON THE RIVERS AND FLOWING DOWNSTREAM...IN CONJUNCTION WITH
THE ADDITIONAL WATER IS CAUSING THE ICE TO JAM UP AND CAUSE FLOODING
TO OCCUR FARTHER UPSTREAM. THIS TYPE OF FLOODING WILL LIKELY CONTINUE
OVER MANY STREAMS AND RIVERS IN NORTHERN OHIO TODAY.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY.  THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO
CROSS SAFELY.  VEHICLES CAUGHT IN RISING WATER SHOULD BE
ABANDONED QUICKLY.  MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.
