The forecaster’s discussion

Written by Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection for Philadelphia and filed with AirNow.

Current Conditions at 3 p.m. EDT this Thursday afternoon: Skies are partly sunny with a cool northeast wind as temperatures struggle in the middle 60s. Clean air continues to be transported in, so fine particle (PM2.5) and ozone levels are well down inside the good range. A coastal low pressure system will back into the east coast over the next few days and cause unsettled weather over the weekend. Here are the forecast details: *** Friday’s forecast: Sunshine and some mid and high level clouds Friday. Highs will reach around 70 degrees with a stiff northeast breeze keeping PM2.5 and ozone low in concentration. *** Extended forecast: An unsettled weekend is likely with periods of windy and rainy conditions as low pressure comes closer to the east coast. Highs Saturday and Sunday will be held to the middle 60s with low ozone and PM2.5 values. Clouds might break for a little sun Monday, but still on the cool side with good air quality.---McAuliffe

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
