Alerts in force

An Air Quality Alert is issued by the National Weather Service on behalf of a state or local agency when pollution is expected to reach a level that harms health. An Air Stagnation Advisory means the air will not move enough to clear what is already in it.

The forecaster’s discussion

Written by Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for West Pinal and filed with AirNow.

Ozone was in the Good AQI range yesterday. There has been passing thunderstorms this morning, and more cloud cover is expected to remain today and will be enough to keep ozone levels in the Good AQI range. Friday and Saturday will still be in the Good AQI range for ozone, but it will be slightly higher because of more sunshine. The next area of low pressure will start moving in from the west later this weekend, continuing to lower ozone levels with rain chances returning as well.

PM10 was in the Good AQI range yesterday, and after this morning's rain, it could be harder to loft enough dust in the coming days to change that. Tonight is the highest chance to have higher dust concentrations over the next few days as storms to the north are expected to bring outflow winds to West Pinal. Storm activity will decrease Friday and Saturday. Rain chances Sunday and Monday could keep the dust at bay a while longer, and the Good AQI PM10 forecasts will continue through early next week. PM2.5 will follow similar trends.

Fine particles in micrograms per cubic meter, ozone in parts per billion as an 8-hour average. The index for each hour is EPA’s: the ozone figure is already the 8-hour average the ozone index is defined on, and the particle figure is run through EPA’s NowCast, which is how an hourly PM2.5 concentration becomes an index.

Category descriptions are the Environmental Protection Agency’s own.

What these numbers are. An index beside a monitor’s name is a measurement, published hourly by AirNow and preliminary until the operating agency certifies it. A category for today or tomorrow is a state or local agency forecaster’s own forecast for a reporting area. An hourly index is NOAA’s air quality model on a five-kilometer grid, not a reading from any instrument. Where a town has no monitor within reach, only the model figures appear, and the page says so.
